Is this powerboat mag?
Got my powerboat today and there is tests on 2 crusers, a ski boat, a bow rider and a rinker. What happened to all the performance boats?
|
Ugh, didn't Rinker come out with a 'performance' boat last year? ;)
I believe they did a 6 page spread/AD of the only performance boat at the beginning of the mag. ......FOUNTAIN! :D |
Ya, but look at that 6 page Fountain ad!!! :D
|
Thanks havn't got mine yet. Now I don't want it.
|
Yup, kinda took the excitement out of getting the next issue.
|
I also just noticed the formula ad is for there cruser liene. You know I stopped getting boating ***azine because it turned into fishermans monthly. I hope PB isn't going that way.
|
You guys can't slam the mag because they test different boats every once in a while. They have always tried to keep it diverse and give a little taste of other boats. I don't really see why people ***** so much about a certain article. If you don't like to read about a bow rider, or ski boat....Dont read the artcle, I don't! But you can't say that they don't cover, and mainly focus on performance boats...Look at any issue in recent history and you will find a (usually high) performance boat on the cover and several inside the mag.
You complain about these boats being tested but what you don't see are the complaints they (PBM staff) get when they put, say...a 51 Outerlimits on the cover, or the 46 Rough rider where people gripe that the boat is out of their reach and unrealistic. Personally I enjoy reading about these "super" boats just like I enjoy reading in other mags about a Ferrari F-50 or Lamborghini Mercialago If you have a beef with some part, email them, they actually listen to their readers and try to shape the magazine to fit the readers likes and needs. Bret and his crew are good people and are truley putting every ounce of effort into producing the best performance boating magazine. You can't please everyone all of the time. Tank |
lets see ads for active thunder, baja, cigarette, donzi, douglas marine, eliminator, formula, halletts, hustler, mti, out erlimits,
powerquests, spectre, sunsation, velocity, and a few of the smaller offshore brands, show me a magazine that has more offshore heritage ! and while formula had and ad for there ss line they also had a ad for their fastech line, personally id like to see a mag come out with nothing but the big off shores with a lot of tech articles and boaters rides boats like the hot rod mags 20 years ago but the plain truth is theres probably less then 1000 maybe 1500 offshore boats sold annually and we our a very small market. why do you think you can buy a crusier of any size for far less than a offshore, numbers! later Dave |
There's some good coverage of both groups' World Championships and a poker run, even if the boat tests leave something to be desired. Haven't looked at all of them yet, but I did see an MTI cat reviewed.
|
I didn't mind that last issue one bit. I look at that test on the Formula SS and PowerQuest SC as a mix between cruiser and performance and not TRUE cruisers.
Heck those so called cruisers were pushing 60+. In fact PQ claims that their's will do 63 that aint to bad for a "cruiser". Not everyone goes 100+ with cover girl cabins or other amenities ;) |
Funny thing...................about 5 years ago I helped a friend purchase a Formula SS........with equivalent power to the one tested (Mercruiser not Volvo). When brand new, It ran a little over 60 with 3 adults and at least 1/2 tank of fuel.
Of course that boat had no steps........The one tested here did. Do your own math. T2x |
Personally, I am pleased with POWERBOAT, and how they seem to have come back a bit to emphasize high-performance.
Unless I'm mistaking them for another mag (and I don't think I am), several years ago, I had cancelled my subscription because they were abounding with family-friendly run-of-the-mill pleasureboat reviews, and I got sick of it. I think they have improved their high-perf coverage. My $.02 |
Didn't see APACHE, but Hawk marine was present.
I have no idea of why they would not be advertising the "NEW APACHE." LOL |
Many good points.
If they dont shuffle the boats they would be testing the same stuff over and over. do ya want to see another 25 then 27 Baja test. Or another 27 or 29 Fountain...NO How about the 29 centurian Typhoon ..Its an amazing performance boat that does many things..its a ski boat. You should check it out. They should continue a wide array of boats as long as they are Performance related. Not just Offshore narrow beam long bow race boat types no one will ever own boats. jb |

T2x Do you happen to know what size Formula it was? My wife and I are seriously considering an SS or similar boat for our next purchase; it's just the best combination of utility (hey, we can put more than 3 people on the boat!) and performance. I'm doing a bit of research on the various models now, and I was under the impression that the 280 and 330 were always straight V's (and still are) and the 400 and the new 370 are stepped (and always have been). Thanks in advance! DR |
DOCKROCKER YOU ARE CORRECT
|
During the winter I look forward to getting and reading all of my boating magazines, especially PBM. I still enjoy the magazine but during these months I need LOUD paint jobs, killer power setups, pictures of Teague launching the test boat........Oh well I'll have to wait till next month.:p

I think Powerboat does an excellent job and has been improving over the past year. I don't necessarilly read all the articles in my Time Magazine, Nat'l Geo, or other publications, but that doesn't make them bad magazines. I'll just skim over those boat tests that don't interest me and focus on the stuff that does. For the most part, they have a good selection of boat tests.
|
T2x,
Thanks - we've got some friends with a 33, but I think a 28' is more in our price range. The wife absolutely loves the boat; really the best of both worlds. Here's hoping the stock market starts heading up! |
Hmmmm....wonder who's covering that???
|
I don't know what you guys are talking about but i just got my copy today and it's got alot more perfomance stuff than normal i think.
|
I didn't say there were NO powerboats, it just seem's a little out of place to see crusers in powerboat.
|
The very first PB mag that I ever saw was one that I bought last month. It had a lot of cool boats in it but I wasnt verry impressed.
I have nothing against cruisers, fishing boats, runabouts, skiboats, pontoons, of river rats......but I would like to see a magazine that focusses strictly on "OFFSHORE PERFORMANCE" style boats. |

Indy, sad but true:(
|
If it doesn't have a big pole or two sticking straight up out of the deck with some form of fabric on it and it uses a a petroleum product for fuel isn't it a powerboat???
|
I'm with you there Bro! I got my copy last night and can't wait to get home tonight and finish reading it!!!!! Mercury 5-Blade prop, a 61 mph 32 ft. Cruiser HMMMMMMMMMMM....., Ike can get some info on his latest venture, wave running, and lets not forget Shanghied Again, Frank Civitano won a T-shirt for his "Best poker Run" article. A great issue if you ask me!
|
I have been subscribing to PB since the 70's and they are still here! Used to be all racing coverage, but they have grown....and more importantly survived! We have seen many publications come and go over the years. I really wonder where they would be at if the founder Bob Nordskog (RIP) was still alive?
|
Not to be picky or nit picky, but just because the name of the magazine is Powerboat, does that mean it can only test performance boats??? The one thing I did find odd, is the POPRA ad APBA schedule and the What's Happening...APBA announces the schedule, they are different...Any news on which one is correct...The dates for Daytona dont match and some of the sites are different...Thanks...
|
I thought the term 'Powerboat' actually applied to large cruisers.
Where as the performance type ie: Cig, Fountain, AT, Baja and..... were classified as sport boats. ???????????? |
details, details....... :)
|
I don' care, it winter, as long as the word "boat" is in it I'm reading it.
