NEWBIE TO THE CLUB! Please read.

Hey there everybody. Well finally I am approved to post! Ive been reading "the board" every day (and nite) for the last week while I was waiting to get approved.

Anyway, my name is NICK MATINA and Im in the process of getting a SCARAB! Im buying it right now, and have already left a deposit for it. I was hoping you guys could lend me your help by telling me what you think of the boat, and how much Im paying for it (am I getting a good deal or getting ripped?).

I am buying the boat for $25,000 cash. Im not like you guys, IM NOT RICH! This is every last dollar that I have to my name and I couldnt afford one penny more. Im trying to get the BEST, BIGGEST, AND MOST BADD @SS boat I can. Anyway, here are the pics of the boat:
http://community.webshots.com/album/6810484uVYZxQpIAD

Its got a pair of 502's in it, and they look and run good! The boat is SOOOOOOO CLEAN I cant believe it.

As I have seen from posts on this site, you want pictures of my wife! Actually, I HAVE SOME!!!! To find out all about me, go to:
http://www.websitemonster.com/nixpix

You can also see there that I like to dive and go bug (lobster) diving. And you can also see that I currently have a 1989 DONZI REGAZZA which Im selling (anybody want it?) for only $8000!!!

ANYWAY! Im very happy to finally be "ON BOARD THE BOARD", you guys all seem really nice, very funny, AND knowledgeable.

Nick

Cord 02-26-2001 04:46 PM

Looks like a really well cared for boat, especially if it's from the late 70's! You had the boat surveyed right?

So watcha gonna call her?

The last time I saw this much energy in a guy was back in my teenaged days. Seems as I was chasing a piece of...did I mention that I'm married?

hp500efi 02-26-2001 04:46 PM

Nick, nice pictures!! oh and yes the boat pics are nice too http://www.offshoreonly.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Boat seems to be very clean. How many hours are on her? Price seems very fair to me. Did a quick check on boattraderonline and the price looks real well.

Welcome aboard. As you have already found out, this board is very respectable and everyone occassionally has a laugh or two to break up the Winter Blues.

Good luck.

Offshore1 02-26-2001 04:52 PM

Hey Nick welcome aboard. Looks like a nice boat your buying. Be careful thow make sure you get a hull survey and engine+Drive cheek too before you go any further. Dont kid yourself $25,000 CASH is quite a bit of money to gather up. Have fun Lata

Shane 02-26-2001 04:54 PM

Dude,

Welcome to the BOARD! It is a great place to hang out and meet a lot of great people and have some laughs and learn alot too. The boat is cool. Like was said earlier, if you can afford it and you like it, and it goes fast enough for you then that is all that matters! Everyone here comes from all walks of life but we all share the same passion and enjoy each other for who they are not what they have. So welcome aboard and bring the Mrs. by anytime! WOW!! There is a thread today that asks to define the word WOW in four words or less.... I define it GINA!!!!!!! http://www.offshoreonly.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.offshoreonly.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.offshoreonly.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.offshoreonly.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.offshoreonly.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.offshoreonly.com/ubb/biggrin.gif oh, and don't take anything here too personal, we are all friends! ENJOY!

Shane

NICKSLICK 02-26-2001 04:55 PM

OK, GUYS!

The engines have SEVENTY FIVE HOURS ON THEM, and the guy has a receipt from THE FACTORY! These engines are FACTORY INSTALLED BRAND NEW 75 hours ago, even the gauges are updated.

The drives are also REBUILT 75 hours ago, Ive got receipts on that too.

The hull is PERFECT, you can see the cracks in your teeth for gods sake.

I think im getting a damn good deal.

Nick

Tee 02-26-2001 05:07 PM

Nick, Looks like a keeper http://www.offshoreonly.com/ubb/smile.gif Gina too http://www.offshoreonly.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ----------T

NICKSLICK 02-26-2001 05:09 PM

the guy im buying it from says he can take it to 75+ with room to go! he claims that the engines are 440HP EACH for a total of 880hp. Should I believe him?

NICKSLICK 02-26-2001 05:09 PM

what the heck is a whipple charger?!?!?1

Shane 02-26-2001 05:10 PM

It is AWESOME!!!!!!!!! I am sure you will be totally hooked once you do! I would highly reccommend that if you need any advice contact Sean Stinson at Dick Simon Marine. Additionally, don't rush up to really high speeds until YOU are perfectly comfortable! It takes time to learn to run a boat fast especially when it get rough! Take your time and learn the boat and individual characteristics. Each boat handles differently, especially at speed. There is nothing wrong with finding some open area of calm water where no one is around and just try different things slowly and work your way up. You will be much better off in the long run! Good luck and say HI to Gina!

jb 02-26-2001 05:10 PM

Dont get too addicted like most of us. There are some people with real problems out there. I dont mention any names!!! They know who they are. I am just glad to see another Scarab owner out there. I was beginning to wonder what happened to us all.

Offshore1 02-26-2001 05:15 PM

Nick Im sorry but I dont think its gonna happen bud. That was 880hp 20 years ago big difference between then and now. That is also a big deep v weighing quite a bit. On a gps you'll probley get readings in the mid to upper 60's.
ps. whipple charger is a supercharger
p.s.s- thats crankshaft horse power not prop shaft. Please dont shoot me !!

Dont mean to burst your buble but I dont know if i would put too much stock into those numbers! Granted you have 502's but from the looks of the pics, if they are correct, you have a restrictive exhaust with those logs. I've got a 1984 ScarabII with worked over 454's they are pushing a solid 450+HP. I havent found the right prop combo for it yet but the best I've got to date is 67MPH. It takes alot to get a heavy boat like ours to get going!

NICKSLICK 02-26-2001 05:19 PM

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!

Niuhi 02-26-2001 05:23 PM

Hey Nick,

Not to worry. Just have your wife with you at all times in a bikini and no one will be the wiser.

jb 02-26-2001 05:27 PM

Nick,
sounds like you are new to performance. Do yourself a favor and get someone to go out with you and teach you how to drive a performance boat. It will be much safer for you and the family(and everyone else). We as performance boaters get a bad rap as it is. Besides you will learn how do get the most of that Scarab out on the water and not in the shop.
You should expect 67 - 71 out of that boat. But that is fast so dont be fooled. Its a great riding boat and you will like it.

Wally 02-26-2001 05:27 PM

I find that women usually tend to get scared when the boat starts to go over 50mph. So theres not much to worry about. Its all your friends who will make you want to go faster. And the ocasional impromptu lake race against another guy! http://www.offshoreonly.com/ubb/biggrin.gif gotta love those!

Hey Nick. Like others have said get a survey. You will find out a lot about the boat. You said it only has 75hours but it only takes a couple of seconds to do damage to one of those motors. It is just going to give you all that much more piece of mind on the deal and it does not cost that much.

Wally, Travis, Waterfoul: I think that Nick and his wife make a good addition to the club. Plus like myself he goes beyond the bat and brings firepower, in more than one way. Now that we found a sucker to put up pictures of his wife who we going to get to send the money http://www.offshoreonly.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Audiofn 02-26-2001 05:55 PM

Seriously though with a boat that old be prepared to do some wire repairs. Other than that is looks like a sweet ride

NICKSLICK 02-26-2001 05:57 PM

Nick,
Welcome to the board. And very nice looking boat.

Take everyones advice. Try to find someone to help you out that has experience with a hi-perf boat. And, take it easy while you learn your own boat. Gotta have respect for the machines.

And try to stay out of the rough water....your wife could kill herself with those things..as you say..daaaaammmmnnnn... Just kiddin' http://www.offshoreonly.com/ubb/wink.gif It's a great thing when your spouse loves boating too!

jpc 02-26-2001 07:27 PM

When I grow up, I want to be just like you!

GO4BROKE 02-26-2001 08:01 PM

Great boat, great wife, congratulations !!! And welcome to the board. Listen to these guys recommendations, 67mph sounds about right for that setup. 75mph is probably on the speedo, but that is of course the number you use when asked how fast it is ! Get headers on that motor, those log manifolds are about the worst you could have. Your losing a lot of power there.
ps...If your paying 25k cash then you are rich, I always sign a bunch of papers, take the boat home, then wait for the phone book sized payment book to arrive. So youve done great !!!
