I think you are getting it right. That is how I do mine and I never see the mileage many claim.

My Truck;
2002 Ford PSD, Dually, 4 x 4, Crew Cab, 4.10 Rear End, Long Bed, all stock except for 50 gallon fuel cell in bed.

The very best I have seen was 16 MPG on a 500 mile round trip to the beach not towing and never seeing over 65 MPH.

I drive 24 miles each way to work daily all interstate (I-40) usually 72-78 MPH and average 13.8 MPG.

Towing the 36 Outlaw, three time now to Florida, the best I have seen is 10.8 MPG and the worst has been 9.5 MPG usually 70-75 MPH.

If you lay into it the mileage will go down, but I do not have a heavy foot, especially when towing.

Wife's Truck;
2001 Ford Excursion 4 x 4, V-10
Best Not Towing 15.2 MPG
Best Towing 10.9 (Baja 272, 6000 lbs on trailer)
Average around town 12-13 MPG

Awesome vehicle, my wife would not trade for two of anything else. Of course she did not pay the gas bill last night! $52.00 to fill up her Ex and $120.00 to fill up my truck. Sometimes I think we are crazy.

The lower 4.10 rear is going to knock a couple of mpg right off the top and the dual rear wheels will take off another one...... but then the lower rear will pull like an elephant and the dual wheels will give the truck a firmer stance when your trailer weight starts pushing..... It's all a trade off....

You are right, I agree 100%. It is just funny to me how many people come into my business driving almost the exact same truck and they all get 20 MPG. This is no lie, I have two employees that can back this story up. A guy with a 2002, F-250, PSD, extended cab, 4x4 with only about 10,000 miles on it told us he was getting 28 MPG all day and 18-20 MPG towing a fifth wheel travel trailer over to the Smokey Mountains.

I told him if he could prove it I would trade him two brand new trucks for his one used one. Never saw him again!

Your numbers look good. I assumed you had 3.73 in the PSD?


I have been told there is around 400 RPM difference between the 3.73 and the 4.10.

I have a 2000 F350 Crew Cab Dually 4X4 with a PSD and 4:10 axles and get 16-17 on the highway running 70 mph not towing. When I was towing our PQ (9,000 lbs on the trailer) we averaged 11 mpg. With the AT (close to 13,000 on the trailer) it has dropped to around 9 mpg. Thats nearly a 50% increase in weight with less than a 20% drop in fuel economy. It's a bad ass truck. We typically tow at speeds between 65 and 75.

Just bought a Diablo chip for a little help on those hills. Hopping for that 2 mpg increase they advertise but will be happy with better pulling power and same MPG.

My measurements are very accurate. I keep a log in the truck and keep very close track of mileage and fuel usage. I am not talking occasionally, I mean every fuel stop ever made:eek: :rolleyes: :D :D What can I say..... I'm an engineer:cool:
