How do you justify the gas?

This is getting crazy. My damn 12 second mustang gets better mileage than the stupid tow vehicle.I got a full-size bronco to tow this thing and it pulls fine but 8mpg come on now. Everytime I pass a gas station the steering wheel starts to turn in for more. It's evil I tell ya.Getting to the point I don't mind the gas in the boat hell it'll last a little while.I think I'm going to cover the fuel gauge to make nyself feel better.

Cutwater 04-29-2001 09:15 PM

Easy to justify........
Gas is just part of the rest and relaxation ritual that is a birth right to every red blooded american male with a boat!
(even if it is a Bayliner!)
If you are having trouble affording all the gas, just tell the Boss you need a raise! If he questions the raise, just refer him to the above mentioned birth right! See, it's easy to justify the gas. (now wasn't that easy!)
Let me know how it goes with the boss........

Shorgasm 04-29-2001 09:25 PM

I told myself no. Just like I did last week and the week before. It's not a question of affording really more like accepting it. ;)

Crazyhorse 04-29-2001 10:54 PM

The wife and I were going to spend three weeks on the boat up in the North Channel and Georgian Bay this summer. Then gas started going through the roof and the gloom and doom reports are saying to expect even higher prices in mid-summer. Ain't no way I'm gonna feed that 1 mpg boat up in Canada so we rented a slip in Muskegon and will use the boat as a cottage. Maybe the oil companies will get the message if enough people buy less gas.

DanB 04-30-2001 07:50 AM

I dont justify it....I just take it in the shorts like everybody else and ***** about it.
In the words of Marlon Brando.."we are the arabs"
Dan

RON 04-30-2001 07:58 AM

I agree!! I took both of my Cats out for a ride this weekend ( cold ) just to dewinterize them , and spent $90.00 in gas and wasn't out for an hour in either one!!
I hear that it's only gonna get worse!!
And thats not even counting the gas for the tow vehicle ($20)!!

Cignificant 04-30-2001 09:39 AM

It's like I tell everyone that asks me - it only hurts when I'm at the pumps! As soon as I hit the water, the pain goes away :D

I couldn't have said it better myself!! Now, if I could only figure out how to get the Waterfoul to run on beer. By the end of the summer, beer mught be cheaper by the gallon than gas!!

I think of it this way (and several others to tell the truth): Boat on the water, tunes pumping, a cold one in hand, and bikini's all around. Gas money? What gas money??? :D :D :D

By the way shorgasm, only 12 seconds?? My friends outboard powered Seebold tunnel does it in 10.2 seconds!!!! And only uses about one gallon to do it!!

Shorgasm 04-30-2001 01:05 PM

Oh stop it would ya. That little mustang is my daily driver anything more and the neighbors are gonna call the cops. Did you read about the dog next door to me? She is a pit bull that doesn't like me on the boat next to her fence. That is until it cranks up. Dog runs like hell. :D

bajabob38 04-30-2001 01:23 PM

Hey, you got to pay to play! :D

GO4BROKE 04-30-2001 10:08 PM

10 mpg dually, 1 mpg Sonic, why try to justify, F the cost of fuel, F the cost of modification, F the high payment. You can't let a little thing like shoveling mountians of cash into a hole in the water keep you from whats important in life. HARDCORE OFFSHORE BOATING !!!!! :D

GO4BROKE 04-30-2001 10:10 PM

Oh yeah, just can't resist busting on shorgasm. Fords towing a bayliner. Its a wonder he ever makes it to the launch ramp. ;)

Jeff 05-01-2001 11:18 AM

don't even worry about the political ploy to justify U.S. oil reserve use and the need to drill offshore U.S. supplys (gulf of mexico), believe it , also Bushes rich oil supporters. Just pay it, build bigger motors and have fun. It's all bull****!

You guys have to have better thingts to do than pick on me. If all you think you have faster car let me know. I'd love to prove you wrong. If that one doesn't work I also have a nine-second bike to do away with you. Like they always say. Anybody can with money can buy something fast but lets see who can use it without getting killed.I just need to do some catching up with the boat thing.Rememeber I'm still new be gentle. Also none of you were always the biggest kid on the block!!!!!!!!! ;)

KCHOTBOAT 05-02-2001 12:56 AM

Chill. Trust me I have had cars faster than yours. Even a VW bug. I have defended you in the past but I believe you bring some of it on yourself. What kind of bike do you own? I have the scares from bikes several feet of stitches. I am sure not as fast as yours but that was 15 years ago. The guys are just giving you crap so just blow it off. You have some cool toys!

Remember this is a boating site so don't challenge to many people. You never know what type of car, bike or boat someone owns.

1Boatnut 05-02-2001 09:07 AM

shorgasm, dont let them bother you. I had a 21ft Bayliner before I bought Baja. You know what, got me to the same places on the lake that all the big boys were.Earned a lot of there respect. Beat the **** out of it and just like a Timex, took a licking and kept on ticking. Enjoy what you got,and be happy your boatin"

Dredgeking 05-02-2001 10:55 AM

Get company gas cards like I do. :D

Gordo 05-02-2001 11:03 AM

Shorgasm,
I keep tryin to tell ya, they're just pullin yer chain!
Fact is, ANY boat that runs across the water, puts a little breeze in your hair, and gets you to the party cove is a good boat. Hell, My dad had a 1982 1950 Capri w/ Volvo 4 cyl. I can honestly say without exaggeration that I have well over 100hrs behind that boat, either on a ski or a tube. Mostly Table Rock, but some on Stockton and Pomme De Terr. Last year I sold it to a friend. Still runs great, and yes, he is still my friend.

As for your question;
How do you justify the Gas?
Myself, I think about my job and all the stuff I see and deal with. Things I hope and pray no one else will ever have to see or deal with.
My boat and time on the water is my getaway from that life. My stress reliever. My counseling. My attitude adjustment time.
I don't do drugs, and don't need beer for a good time, (ok, sometimes it helps) ;)
It may hurt at the pump, but once I get on the water, It's all worth it.
Forget the fire and medical calls. I'm on the water. Life is good again. :)

Waterfoul 05-02-2001 11:06 AM

Dredgeking, can you send one of your cards up here for me to use? I promise to visit the gas station only once. Boat in tow, all my gas cans (8 of them counting the dual tanks I have for the Glastron), the lawn mower, the weed whacker, and the snow blower (why not!) in the back of the truck. And I'll put some old tires on the bumper and push the Honda down to the station since it needs a new belt at the moment and can't be driven that far.

What do you say?? On trip?? Please??

Did the math, that would be about 199.5 gallons if everything was empty.

Shorgasm 05-02-2001 11:28 AM

Nice try mikee

Dredgeking 05-02-2001 12:33 PM

Waterfoul, did you want to buy premium or regular? What are the prices up there? $1.50 reg 1.70 prem down here.

Neverfastenuf 05-02-2001 01:14 PM

Justify the price of gas? If a person can justify spending thousands & thousands of dollars on a boat,(intials\bring out another thousand), it shouldnt be very difficult to justify fuel expenditures.(Even though the prices are absolutely ridiculous) And like posted earlier, you pay to play, and then the pain goes away!! :D :D

Dredgeking 05-02-2001 01:17 PM

It's easy to get financing on a big fast boat. It's hard to pay for the gas :(

Shorgasm 05-02-2001 01:24 PM

Hey KC I have an 99 r-1 yamaha. It is still for street and not for drag but still throws 155 hp to the tire on pump gas.I am falling out of the bike thing getting funny little feeling in my head. Gotten away with it for a long time. I think it is about time to cut my streak off. Have some awesome wheelie vids stoppies doughnuts **** like that. Three miles on the back tire at midnight on two-lane. Bike next to me taped it.About 6 feet away.

Waterfoul 05-02-2001 02:46 PM

Dredge king, 87 in the trucks and lawn wquipment, 89 in the boat (100 gals). Today, 87 is at $1.79 and premium is $1.99. That's at the cheaper stations. I've seen premium for up to $2.19 this week.

So, how about that card?????? Need my mailing address????

Mike

Dredgeking 05-02-2001 02:53 PM

Waterfoul, I dread going up to MI this summer with those high prices. I hated it last year. What do you have to trade for the card? I'm single now so sisters and sister inlaws may be negotiable into the deal :p

Waterfoul 05-02-2001 02:57 PM

My sister is married with children. You don't stand a chance with her. Sorry. But I know lot's of single women!!

And a good friend ownes several bars. Drinks are big, strong, and cheap!!!

Mike

CV-23 03-28-2002 09:44 AM

I ran through 310 gals in a 350 SB last Summer and still anchored alot. Its only money!.....Mike.

Jayl13 03-28-2002 10:06 AM

im suprised that you get 8 MPG that is pretty good
With my F350 with a 460 hog in it, towing my boat from connecticut down to PA, on the highway, i got 3 mpg
so whatever you have, dont complain, believe me im worse
3mpg on HIGHWAY ,,,,,,,, HIGHWAY

Normally with no boat I get 9mpg DAILY suburb driving and yes this toilet is my daily driver

so just grin and bear it dude, suck it up and move on

having twin tanks does not help either, just makes it freakin worse
no wonder the guy I got it from was selling it, costs more in gas to feed this thing than it does to buy a new one

Hell , next one is a diesel no question
Jason

Luvoffshore 03-28-2002 01:18 PM

Go buy a used or new Ford F350 Power Stroke diesel. The WORST towing mileage is 10 mpg and average without towing is high teens/low 20's. It works great for me!

cuda 03-28-2002 02:44 PM

I always figure that no matter how high gas goes, it is still the cheapest thing I ever have to buy for the boat. Now, excuse me while go down and pick up my boat this afternoon that I dropped off this morning to have a new drive coupler installed. That will probably cost me more than all summer's gas bill! :(

CV-23 03-28-2002 02:52 PM

I know what your saying Cuda.....Top seal on drive was leaking oil into bellows and lost the Gimble Bearing at the same time. Replaced all the bellows also and waterpump and water hose....I should be good until the exhaust manifolds need changed to Alum. Performance model...Ching, ching goes the cash register....Mike.

US1 Fountain 03-28-2002 06:35 PM

DAMN, you guys are going way back. Slow day at work? :D

Shorgasm 03-28-2002 07:12 PM

Holy crap.......where did this come from???????

pullmytrigger 03-28-2002 07:25 PM

Shore- why dont you sell the Mustang, the R1 and the Bayliner, buy yourself a nice boat and use the pull truck as your daily driver...........just like the rest of us!........its priorities man......hell you'd even be able to use the boat all year around, unlike about 75% of us............Doug

pullmytrigger 03-28-2002 07:41 PM

And gas, I get asked that all the time, again its priorities, people with $200,000 cottages along with their regular house say things like "Boy I wouldnt want to be putting gas in THAT thing" Yeah and if I had payments, taxes, hydro, upkeep etc etc on TWO houses then yeah,I probably wouldnt want my gas bill. Those $2000 one week for two people trips to the Carribean can put alot of gas in my boat and truck. I dont snowmobile, golf or blow $200 a week at the peelers.......I LOVE a $200 charge at the pump because that means IM GOIN BOATIN!!!!!!.......,Doug

GEORGE YURICK 03-28-2002 07:42 PM

hell .. spend it all now . can,t take it with me when i go. so as long as i am enjoying myself now who cares how much i am spending.. besides if any one of us really cared that mucch about the price of fuel we would not have these silly toys:D
