OT: New 6.0 Diesel

I have a new Excursion that is supposed to arrive in a couple of days that has the new 6.0 diesel engine. I have become nervous about buying it due reports of engine failure at very low mileage. From what I have read there are some injectors failing which is allowing large amounts of diesel to enter the oil. Does anyone on the board have one of these engines? Are the failures a small number but getting a lot of attention due to unhappy people posting on the internet? I hate to buy one now and find out they have fixed the problems in 6 months.

Check at thedieselstop.com under the forum section.

I don't have a Ford, but read all about diesels to keep up.

I hope anyone that has the 6.0 diesel reports there experiences good or bad, as I am getting ready to buy one soon if everything seems okay.. Was trying to hold off as long as possible to make sure all was well with this motor..

All I have heard (from some local Ford mechanics) is that the turbocharger has failed on several early units. Their armchair engineering theory was failure due to higher bosst pressures in a smaller displacement engine. Totally unverified, so take it for what it's worth.

I have done performance upgrades on several and I have seen NO PROBLEMS !! :D About 5 of my friends have stock ones and have no problems either . I can tell you automatic lovers that the new 5 speed trans is a lot better then the old P.O.S. :D

I'm waiting till they start giving away the 7.3's. :)

Thanks for the responses. It sounds like there are a few problems that are being worked out. Apparently the ICP sensor was changed as of 02/04 build dates. I guess I'll check the build date when it gets here and go from there.

I just picked up my 2003 crewcab dually with the 6.0 on Monday. I've got 350 miles so far, but time will tell. Awsome motor though! Very quiet and lots of power.

I just got a call from the dealer and mine is in. I'll pick it up tonight and hopefully it will be as good as my 99 F250 Diesel was. Anyone know who does a good job of adding air suspension for a reasonable price?

pure energy who did you buy it from rt 23

Wayne Ford on 46

Shop around if you are looking. I paid full sticker. They did go up on my trade quit a bit but would not budge on the price of the truck. The extra on the trade also helped on sales tax.

Hey diesel guys, what sort of mpg, non-towing, are you seeing in daily driving. Also, what rear end gear?

Hustler 26 03-12-2003 06:34 PM

Friend of mine just bought a new F450 dual with the 6.0 liter. I'll let you know.

Troutly how did you access the Ford SSM. As a wrench turner it would help me to know. ;) Thanks

Good news, bad news. Good news is I sold my 99 F250, received my new labbed props, got my hot tub fixed that has not worked for over a year and picked up the Excursion today which the ride, handling, turning radius, noise level and power is much better than my old 7.3 diesel 250.

Bad news is the build date on the Excursion is 02/03:( . One day, one bloody day and today would have been perfect. I have had two cold starts and I already have a rough idle. I know the dealer well and will have the ICP sensor replaced soon.

I must say though, even knowing that I have a problem that needs to be fixed it still is an awesome vehicle. I will let everyone know how things go.

Also, the Tranny is smoother than any vehicle I have ever driven which is very nice.

Horseplay3, Get the 3.73 gears , limited slip too. These motors make plenty of power . Don't need no stinkin 4.10's !!:D I get 16.5-17.5 with all my trucks . Crew cab F350's . A good "chip " can realy add to that !!

Troutly , thanks for that input ! Mine is due in tomorrow , I think ! JOE
