Had a '96 Limited V8 model - full time 4wd -did'nt like - tight turns all you hear is tire squeal - Spark Knock whenever towing - Now I got a 2-door tahoe for around the same $$ - it's better all around especially the Vortec 350 - With the two door turning radius is as good or better than the Jeep - towing - no comparison

I have been in the car business 25 years, Stay away from the full time 4x4, they have alot of problems. Motors seem to be reliable.
Transfer cases leak. But truth be known, all vehicles have weak areas. "buy a warranty"

I am a big JEEP fan. I have owned almost everything they have made from Willy's to 1996 Grand Cherokees.
When Crysler bought them things changed, for the better and the worse.
The last ones I have owned are these:
1995 Grand Cherokee Up Country Laredo V-8 4X4
Had LOTS of transmission problems. They replaced the transmission under warranty, the same problems continued and I traded it for a 1996
Purchased two new 1996 models the same day.
Limited V-8 4x4 Grand Cherokee
Laredo 4.0 Straight Six Grand Cherokee
The Limited had so many electrical problems you cannot believe. The dealer finally told me I was not alone and they coulf not fix it.
The Laredo was sold to my mother-in-law in 1999 with 45,000 miles and she still has it today, 90,000 miles approx and it looks and runs GREAT, trouble free. I am actually thinking of buying it back from her.
I like the looks of the new ones, but do not have experience past 1996.
Good luck

I currently am on my 2nd Grand Cherokee Laredo. I special ordered the V8 with Select Trac (Not Full Time). No Quadra Drive or Quadra Track The dealer told me it wasn't available but I new it was. Haven't had any problems so far (34000 miles) other than having to cut the from rotors kinda early. I tow a 27ft Activator with no problem. My trailer has disc brakes so that probably helps.

Had a 1999 with the V8. Sold it with 60,000 miles on it. The best SUV I ever had. All I did to it was put gas. No problems and I towed my Cigarette (8,000lbs) with no problem.
I would get out of my Jeep and get into my friends Explorer
which felt like junk.

Had a 94 Limited with the 5.2 (318) V8, and towing package. No real problems until we had 50K miles, then had to replace a bent rear axle, fuel pump, A/C, engine mounts, radio - all of them pretty expensive and pretty much known weak points. Good ride and good towing abiity, though.
Bought an '01 Limited with the new 4.7 V8. Really nice, almost luxiurious interior, super-smooth ride and engine. Gear ratios aren't quite as good as the old one for towing 4500 lbs. Better mileage overall, though. Reliability has been 100% so far.
Overall - no regrets.
