Shotgun Muffler Tips???

I'm thinking about putting either the Shotgun Muffler Tips on our Fountain or at least something like Shotgun's.

Anyone know where the best deal on them is??

Have any different muffler tips or idea's?? I thought I would stay with a Shotgun like style, since they are automatic, or open on their own.... Anyone have any pro's or con's???????

Griff 03-21-2003 12:49 PM

Brad, I've put Shotguns on the Pantera. There is a significant difference in how loud it is especially at idle and all through the rpm range. Used to have to yell while talking at idle. Now you can carry on a conversation without much effort. I think I paid about $400-$420 for mine locally.

R Addiction 03-21-2003 01:05 PM

Griff, they made that much of a difference? Cool! What power do you have?

bearpaw 03-21-2003 05:41 PM

Will they work on dry stainless marine?

FunHome 03-21-2003 07:29 PM

Griff, Locally??? There is a place in Nebraska to buy boat parts?? Come on!!!!

Really, where did you get them?

Cat, I got your PM, maybe one of the cool suppliers that are here on the board will give us a deal if we buy more than one or two set's?? Hint, Hint, Hint!!!! is anyone listening????

Von Bongo 03-21-2003 07:30 PM

Griff had to take a nap :D you know how those old guys are

He has a merc 525sc

Waterfoul 03-21-2003 07:36 PM

I am running a pair on my 468, 435 hp motor as well. I have talked to Drew (at Drew Marine, who makes the Shotguns) about them several times. He says they will work on dry exhaust, though you will see less db loss than a wet system. I ordered them direct from Drew (back of Hotboat Magazine) and paid the same thing Griff did.

And yes, they take the "bark" out of your exhaust, especially at idle.

The bad thing is you are right-- I took a nap:D Worked till 3am then in court from 830-noon and had to go back to work at 430.

Yep, power is a 525SC and they did help quite a bit. Got them from Midwest Performance Boats here in Bellevue NE.

ccarloss 03-22-2003 05:04 AM

Was there any affect on performance after installing the shotguns? The reason I ask is that I am looking for some mufflers as well. I have heard good things about the Teague's but am definitely open to other options.

Warlock 27 03-22-2003 05:49 AM

Good reduction in db...zero loss in hp and totally maintenance free,I would buy them in a heart beat

Mufflers

Bearpaw,
What the hell are you thinking of? If you were to quiet that Boat of yours, what would the people around here have to ***** about..:D :D
While they are *****ing about you they sorta forget about me...
And I'm going to run what I have, and thats the way its suppose to be, but good luck on being the church mouse in our area.:D :D

formula31 03-22-2003 09:21 AM

I had them on my formula, on and off. Dry pipes, 570 hp NA. They made quite a difference at idle but only at idle. I even put stronger springs in them to try and get under 90 db. Best i could do was 92 at idle. I liked them a lot.

Waterfoul 03-22-2003 11:22 AM

The Shotguns will not give you the db reducton that the Teagues will. They are totally different types of mufflers.

And like formula31 said, they give the most db reduction at idle. After that, you might as well have open exhaust (because the flap opens automatically and you basically have open exaust when this happens).

This all sounds great to me!! I'm just looking to cut down on the noise at an idle, plus if the water patrol see that I at least tried to quiet it down a little maybe they will be easy on me!! (I think when they hear a loud boat and see no muffler at all they tend to watch you a little closer!!)

Cat, you want to call Drew Marine or do you want me to??? anyone else need some???

Waterfoul 03-22-2003 11:50 AM

Brad, Drew once offered a group discount to OSO if "we" ordered enough of them. Don't remember how many needed to be bought, but you might call and ask him.

BAD-HABIT 03-22-2003 12:42 PM

Awesome product....I have them on a 375hp SBC and they are the ticket...They really take the bark off the noise yet still leave a nice solid rumble....Product is high quality with a simple design. You can make slight adjustments for the mid and top end. I push about 5400 Rpm's and they only open about 1/3 of the way. The sound for the most part exits downward at idle. At higher rpm's the pressure opens the flaps and lets some of the sound then go out the back but still at a somewhat downward angle. And Finally you can probally by 2 or 3 sets for the price of a set of Teagues or Imcos. Call Drew he is very good to talk to.

572Daytona 03-22-2003 02:21 PM

I might be interested in some too. Does anyone know if they will work with Bassett Over the Transom headers? I've got the bassett mufflers in there now but they cost me several hundred RPM at WOT. From what the officer told me who gave me a ticket for running open headers In Georgia they just do a visual inspection to insure you have some sort of muffling device, there is no actual DB target.

KAAMA 03-22-2003 03:39 PM

Can anyone answer this question about the Shotguns?

Does anyone know if the Shotgun's are any quieter when they are in the FULLY OPEN possition??? When idling I want them to take the "snap" or "kackel" out, BUT when I go on plane I want them to open up to a FULL OPEN possition and I want ALL the DB sound my engines make as if the Shotguns were NOT even installed at all! I may be interested in 2 sets of the 4.5" ones myself.

Waterfoul 03-22-2003 03:39 PM

572Eliminator, they come in 4" and 4 1/2" ID so they slip OVER your exhaust tips/headers. I have seen them on over the transom headers before.

OBNOXUS21 03-22-2003 03:49 PM

Yeah Brad you know I need some. Those ones I got I don't think will work. I'll talk to you about this tomorrow.

572Daytona 03-22-2003 04:04 PM

Thanks for the reply, Waterfoul. So I'm assuming since I have 4" collectors on the Bassetts that I would need the 4" Shotguns then?

Seems reasonable. :D

From what I have seen over the years, the "over the transom" style of Bassett Headers usually have somewhat of a "flair" or "bell" shape at the very end of the tailpipe. So make sure you've got the correct measurements before you order------Either way I am sure Drew Marine can get you point in the right direction. :)

formula31 03-22-2003 06:17 PM

Kaama, I had the original ones. They had holes drilled in the flapper plate, not like the new ones with the holes in the bottom of the pipe. They will open fully at wot and dont have any backpressure. I think you can still get those.

I've seen those too, but mine are the more modern style that are just straight thru. Now don't look at this picture too many times or I'm going to have to charge for the bandwidth :p

I have a pair for sale 4.5" for sale 250$

Bad Girl, I have to ck my pipes. I may be interested. :)

32storm 03-23-2003 08:33 AM

Kaama, in full open position, the shot-gun tips are not any quieter. Around the dock, or at idle speeds, the piston is keeping flapper closed and forcing thru holes in bottom of tips. This directs exhaust toward the water. Once, you start opening up the throttles, pressure from exhaust is over-riding piston force which results in flaps opening up. Brings back that sweet sound of a regular thru-hull! Great product, simple & reliable. Also can adjust pressure as to how quick they open-up.

I've got over 100 hr.s on mine and, I too, really like them. Their design is a great example of the KISS, (Keep It Simple Stupid) theory!

Mr Gadgets 03-23-2003 07:16 PM

I might be interested in a set.. I have talked to Drew about the ones I have now, with holes in the plate, he said they are very old and the new ones are better. I am running a them at the end of my Borla mufflers with dry exhaust all the way out.
So count me in on a good price if possible. Drew also told me that my motor would require a set with more holes in them, so that info would be needed from each customer..

Thanks for your response. The reason why I'm asking is because The cheapest mufflers that come from Gaffrig Marine are a straight pipe (no bulges or bell shapes) muffler that has holes drilled in the bottom with a butterfly valve that opens by an electrical air operated switch. They resemble the Shotguns and have the same exact design only the Gaffrigs are a bit longer and have the little air cylinders that open the butterfly valves via a tiny air compressor. I asked Gaffrig about the sound levels it makes when the muffler valve is wide open and they said; "even with the valve all the way open the muffler itself still quiets the exhaust sound by 7db just by being on the end of the tailpipe." -----which is NOT the answer that I was looking for. Therefore I was hoping that the Shotguns weren't like the Gaffrig's units I have mentioned above. It may seem to be sounding a bit excentric about this but it is what I want. I will need to put a call into Drew Marine and find out still. :)

Mr. Demeanor 03-24-2003 12:15 AM

I have the shotguns and mine are half under water at idle. With the flapper closed and the exhaust exiting thru the bottom of the Shotgun, my exhaust is under water at idle. Sounds like I am through prop except a little more gurgle as the are closer to the surface.
You can also play with the flapper mechanism so they don't open or only open a little even at full throttle. I talked with the manufacturer who said that with a stock 454, there is enough exhaust exiting the holes underneath that you can run full throttle w/o water backing up in the exhaust. I closed em up once when I was taking some family for a ride. You have to get wet to do it but its a nice feature.

OBNOXUS21 03-24-2003 04:14 PM

FunHome and I spoke yesterday...............
I know I need two sets as does he !!!

Hustler 26 03-24-2003 05:19 PM

In New York the law requires you to run automatic mufflers. The Shotguns are legal in NY. The Teague mufflers and the Gaffrig units are not because the operator can turn them off or on. Mercury Silent Choice isn't even legal. You should check the laws where you live.
I use the Shotguns on my boat and love them. ;) ;) ;)

Waterfoul 03-24-2003 07:17 PM

If you ask Drew, he will tell you that the shotguns virtually eliminate any chance of reversion. They keep the pressure inside the tailpipe constant, not allowing for the rearward flow of water. I've been running them for years, and I don't even have internal flaps, but have never had a reversion issue.
