If you wake up everyday and start drinking till you go to bed at night, soon it will be hard to drink enough to get a hangover.Start with beer and when your up to a case a day switch to whiskey about a fifth a day until you get to about a 1/2 gal. Then stay at that amount that should be enough to cover any amount of partying you do.

Amy 03-31-2003 08:42 AM

25mg. of Vioxx. It won't tear up your stomach either. Works so much better than Advil or Tylenol.

doright 03-31-2003 09:49 AM

The problem is dehydration. Alcohol (ETOH) metabolism burns up tons of fluid. Hypovolemia ensues. As the liver chops up the ETOH a by-product called paraldehyde is pumped out into the bloodstream. This is your headache source and the cause of your nausea.

The solutions are threefold. First replenish your intravascular volume. IV fluids are ideal. For those of us who don't keep that stuff around the house hyperosmolarity can help. Think Pizza or a cheeseburger with salty fries. It literally sucks fluid back into the veins from the surrounding tissue. This increases intracerebral blood pressure/flow and the headache abates. You still have to make up the fluid deficit, however, as things will redistribute themselves over the next few hours.

The oxygen thing is a myth. What makes you fell better after time on the treadmill is you've revved up your blood flow, thereby circulating blood thru the liver many more times than you would at rest. Each pass thru the liver "cleans" the paraldehyde from the system. Think fuel filter.

The last is disruption of the pain pathways to the brain. Plain old ibuprofen is good enough for this task. Take 8oo milligrams at bedtime. If you have Zantac or Tagamet take that as well. Helps to minimize stomach irritation.

There you have it. Reliable, accurate medical advice from a licensed pro. That would have cost $55 in the office.

Now somebody buy my damn boat!

Doc

well said Doright, The vest way to fix a hang over is not get one,
DRINK MORE OFTEN!!! ever get drunk every day for a couple of weeks? after the first few days you don't wake up hung over you wake up thirsty and dazed, MUCH EASIER TO COPE WITH THAN HUNGOVER.
Sometimes a couple of vicodins help too.:D

jrocket 03-31-2003 12:28 PM

Avoid hangovers remain drunk!:D

Actually the best way to avoid is a shot of agua between every beer, dehydration is the main cause of you feeling like s#*t.

FunHome 03-31-2003 03:26 PM

I have found that "ALEVE" seems like a miracle drug!! Plus water and sleep. But, a friend of mine was just telling me about something new from Alka-Seltzer called "morning relief" she said it's awsome. But, a little hard to find....I did see it today at the Conv. Store though.........Might be worth a try!!

JUSTONCE 03-31-2003 03:29 PM

all thats in "morning relief" is asprin, and caffine. I think.

I think GL is on to something.......

bermudaboy 03-31-2003 07:29 PM

Well - there have been some good hi-tech posts here. The (GNC or other supplier of your choice) supplement mentioned is probably cysteine - or possibly glutathione, which is what your body makes with the cysteine. This is the stuff that your body uses to detoxify itself. Buy either of these basic compounds rather than any potions marketed as "hangover cures" - those will be lots more expensive for essentially the same thing. Take this before you go drinking. It is also a good idea to make sure your general hydration levels are good (i.e. make sure that you drink lots of water all the time anyway, but particularly on days when you intend to go drinking) because available water is an important part of the detox process. Maintaining a good vitamin B intake (the contribution of the yeast in the beer does NOT count!) is also important for helping your body cope with toxins. This is even more important for women, who generally have a lower vitamin B intake (partly because of the beer factor).

And if you forgot to plan ahead/have been neglecting your overall health and wellbeing, I find that lots of water after the fact - before you go to bed/pass out and continuing through the night - plus a couple of Alka seltzer is the way to minimise the aftereffects. And again on the ibuprofen(Advil)/acetominophen(Tylenol) topic - you really want to avoid taking complicated drugs when you have alcohol in your system. Aspirin-based products work because of the vaso-dilation factor (they expand your blood vessels so blood flow, and therefore oxygenation, is improved) but other painkillers can do a number on your stomach if it is a little raw from alcohol intake (we're talking ulcers etc. from ibuprofen - you should not take it on an empty stomach regardless) never mind the liver complications. And if you have access to oxygen, go for it, but it will only help in the short term - you will feel bad again later on if you haven't addressed the hydration issue. I have to agree with the salty crackers/dry toast/pizza/chips menu for stomach recovery.

Cheers,

Bermudagirl, a.k.a. Mrs. Bermudaboy

I'd say if it's that much work, throw in the towel and be hungover. :D

Problem is, I never remember going to bed, so none of this would help me.

Doing something before starting to drink is what I'd be interested in... :D

Water. Drink lots of water. One of the reasons for a hangover is dehydration. Thats why I drink Jack and water. Hydrating as I drink and it helps flush the toxins out. But then I pee all the time but what female doesnt! :drink:

Re: Best cure for hangovers (besides another beer)

The best cure I ever had was about 5 years ago. I was on a week long party binge in FL w/ 2 of my friends. The last night there we stayed at my parents house because they were close the airport. My dad had an anuerism about a month earlier and the doctor had obviously given him some serious medication for it.

I woke up after the last night of partying like a rock star and could not get out of bed. Literally could not lift my head off the pillow. My dad gives me this horse pill. 20 minutes later I was up eating breakfast and packing for the flight home.

Pill was like codeine/morpheine/aspirin, etc. Holy Crap that was good stuff. Just need to find someone with brain problems andd they can hook you up:)

My kind of girl... :D :D

Water definitely seems to be the cure all, but it just doesn't appeal to me while I'm drinking. More water while drinking = less drunkeness... We can't have that now. :D

Re: Best cure for hangovers (besides another beer)

before I became a lightwieght, 2 traditional alka-seltzers and a teaspoon of salt in a highball glass. This is especially effective if done @ the "early wake-up" then crash again for a couple hours. Simple, effective, easy to get your hands on.

You'll have a much better head/ clear sinuses when you do get up for the day, and feel much more like tolerating copious amounts of good fluids.

Happy B-Day Bill. :drink:

Re: Best cure for hangovers (besides another beer)

This thread is incredibly informative. Had I only read such knowledge while trying to keep warm during my four year vacation at UW-Madison. Alas, somethings missing. Where's the section on cures for the beer sh!ts??

As for my own remedies:

1. Water, water, and more water before you pass out. :drink:
2. A 2 tablespoon loss of protein, best accomplished honestly, though a dishonest nut will suffice but makes for a lousy story the next day when comparing notes with your drinking buddies. :evilb:
3. If you are spinning, find the nearest hopper, pull trigger, and see item #1.
4. Make sure wife didn't get as phk'd up as you so she can manage the monsters in the morning. :D
5. Repeat as necessary.
