7th Annual Chicago ThundeRun...June 21st

Got my application in the mail today...oh yeah!
Me likey Kilo run too.
Time to dust off those other pulleys;)

candyman35 04-22-2003 12:53 AM

B4M,
I guess the rumor isn't just floating around this year! :p :D Rich has my application in the mail. It will be a great time. Do you know which charity the run is benefiting this year? What's up with a Kilo run?

Dan

OBNOXUS21 04-22-2003 03:10 AM

Is there any recommended places to stay and launch near the 'headquarters' of the main events?
How many years has this run been going on?
Cost? And is this a "Poker Run?"

I got a truck to take the boat other places this summer. If there is a link that would answer all my questions, I would appreciate it!!!

Thanks,

Obnox21

candyman35 04-25-2003 01:03 AM

OBNOXUS21,
The run is a Poker Run. This is the seventh year for the run. The run originates out of Pastrick Marina in Indiana. It is a charity run with the proceeds going to Ronald McDonald House. I believe the cost is $375.00 per boat. I don't think Rich has a web site. I'm sure He will chime in with some information.

Dan

Payton 04-25-2003 06:08 AM

Also there is a Harra's casino Hotel right next to the marina.
I got my infoin the mail yesterday.

dyno 04-25-2003 07:50 AM

Is this a COPS event?how many boats usually attend? how far do they run? more info please!

Crazyhorse 04-25-2003 08:43 AM

Yeah! what Dyno said.

Rich Obren 04-25-2003 11:11 AM

Thanks to everyone, we have had great response this year. To answer some of your questions, I founded ThundeRun in 1994, and yes that is how it is spelled. This is not a cops run. Candyman and Back4more will confirm we always have a great time, and the course is always a surprise. Just make sure your gas tank is full. I always have a short course and a long course, so everyone goes in the same direction some just go farther if they want. Also depending on weather conditions you might want to shorten your course. The run is designed for everyone to have fun. We are hoping for 100+ boats this year. Web site will be up soon. This event is 100% for charity and has always been.

This years charity is Ronald McDonald House (sorry Too Old) and yes Ronald will be there. I have dedicated this years run to Ben Zejeski a very dear friend that was lost this year. You might have known Ben from his Cigarette Top Gun with big letters on the side "NEXT" or you might have known him from his 80' Baia named Steelin that he keeps in Miami.

If you want an application and have not recieved one, please e mail me with your mailing address, and fax number. We will get you the information ASAP. The application will answer most questions, if not please contact me.

Back4more yes the KILO run will be fun! Who will be the king of Chicago. Remember boost is your friend. I will be at 11 pounds with 110 octane.

FFO 04-25-2003 08:42 PM

Mark and John
Look forward to hooking up with you guys this year, Im trying to get more boating time in this year, wish me luck!
I dont think that I will be ready to splash until the mid of the month or so . As you may know, I put on a pair of B-maxs this winter and they have B-max bottoms, they do not come polished.but they soon will be. I have a new barn here at the house so the boat is home and the extra time I have is spent here polishing and tinkering.. one drive is about done now..
anyway, glad summer is here see you soon!

FFO 04-28-2003 10:33 PM

Hi LES I saw Joe today at Doyne's . HE told me the same thing you just did .. I told him about the "THUNDERUN" HE said he would like to do the short run . That's what I am going to do . So looks Like we all can go together !!! Payton are you doing short or long ?

candyman35 04-28-2003 11:15 PM

You guys don't have to decided on the short route so quick. Make your decision the day of the run. There was an all ladies team in a 24' Baja that did the long run in 4-5's one year. She bought a new boat for the next run.
Dan

OBNOXUS21 04-29-2003 01:45 AM

This is starting to sound like a GREAT time ;) !!!

---- FFO -- No, my boat is not 21', that is my favorite number and how much of a classic she is at this time ;) :) ;)

I am definitely looking forward to this event!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any and all recommendations are welcome, since I have never been in these areas.

Thanks

boatfreak 04-29-2003 06:49 AM

Will this thing fill up or can I get in a day or two before the run? I can't make plans that far in advance. Work sucks!

Rich Obren 04-29-2003 01:56 PM

Boatfreak 28, in answer to your question of will this event fill up the answer is yes. In answer to your question as to can you enter a day or two before the event, in all fairness to the providers of food (cocktail party, breakfast, lunch and dinner), t shirts, event bags, and let the list go on, well you no the answer. This is a charity event and the worst case is you have a possible write off. The other thing that you can do is give it away to a friend for them to attend or sell your spot to someone on the waiting list.

The good news is usually once you commit, if you are like me, I find the time. We are also the only Poker Run on south Lake Michigan, this year. This is our 7th year and we no what you want, and we give it to you.

Candyman has made a good point at pointing out that when you sign up for the poker run you make the choice the day of the run as to if you want to take the short run or the long run. The deciding factor is usually the following:

1. Weather
2. Water condition
3. How much did I drink the night before
4. How much did my crew drink the night before

As you can see this is your event. We all start in the same location, have lunch in the same location, dinner in the same location. Some go further because they want to. Trust me we all see each other and party together.

If I have you confused that is part of your fun. Remember we always have too much fun.

Ask Back4more or Candyman or Zoomnfun they are always there.

boatfreak 04-30-2003 08:33 AM

Well if you are going to make me feel guilty about it I guess I'll just have to get my work done. :D Sounds like a lot of fun so count me in.

Rich Obren 04-30-2003 09:09 AM

Work hard, play hard. Glad you are joining us!

stevel 04-30-2003 12:46 PM

Hey Candyman,

I also ran the whole run in those big waves in my 25 foot boat. We were running together and the girls decided to hit it. There was a lot of air under their props. We chose the slow and steady way. We would pass them when they stopped to let their engine cool down. They were spending so much time in the air that their engine overheat alarm would sound. Then they would pass us again and we would pass them again. It was a fun day. It took everyone a few days for their back to return to normal.

Rich - How about getting a chiropracter to sponsor the event!

Steve

Rich Obren 04-30-2003 01:38 PM

Steve

Great idea I will see what I can do. There is a new added feature this year that should help the back pain. We will have 4 hours of open bar with premium alcohol at dinner this year. This bar bill is on me, so I can bet no one will feel any pain until the next morning.

I guess one of the prizes needs to be aspirin!

FFO 05-01-2003 02:22 PM

Rich got my app Thank also is lunch paided for ?

Rich Obren 05-01-2003 02:57 PM

Yes lunch is included!

Payton 05-03-2003 05:23 AM

Looks like we are going to go!! I'm sending my ap back today.

My wife is concerned about what to wear or where to get ready for the awards dinner. What do people comonly do? Get a room? Wear what you had on all day? Guys, what do you wives/girlfriends say?

candyman35 05-03-2003 11:05 PM

Mark,
If it's anything like the last ThunderRun you won't need a shower!:D Everyone was treated to a free shower on the last leg of the run courtesy of the BIG water that day. Hopefully that won't be the case this year. As for changing it's a mixed bag. Some change and others wear the same clothes. In the past there hasn't been a lot of time between the end of the run and the awards dinner. It's always nice to have the option of a room if there's enough time.

I plan to get a room over at Harrah's for Friday and Saturday. It's going to be a mini vacation that weekend. :)
