I got this from my younger Bro in NH yesterday:
GILFORD — While it may not be a record, the official Ice-Out date most likely will not occur this week or next week.
Official Ice-Out on Lake Winnipesaukee is declared when the MS Mount Washington can complete its route around the lake into Alton Bay, Weirs Beach, Center Harbor and Wolfeboro without being obstructed by ice.
Last week, Dave Emerson of Emerson Aviation predicted this year’s "ice-out" would occur May 14, two days later than the current record which was set in 1988.
Emerson is out of the area this week, but Brian Burbach, chief flight instructor at Emerson Aviation, predicts a May 6 date.
"Alton Bay is pretty much broken up, but there’s still a lot of ice up by Center Harbor that isn’t dark at all," said Burbach, who last flew over Monday.
On average, the ice usually goes out around April 20. The latest date on record, May 14, 1888, is four days later than the next latest, May 10, 1893. The latest date in the 1900s, however, was May 5, reached in both 1956 and 1971. The earliest on record came on March 28, 1921.
