If you're selling, an honest, detailed description will prevent a misunderstanding. If I sell something, I tell the buyer if it's not what they expected, send it back for a full refund.
Simple. [at least to me]

So I can install a bilge pump, wire it, screw it down, and everything, never turn it on, clip the wires all the way to 2.5 inches long for install, and still pull it out and sell it as new?
New is fricking new. Out of box a box ok, but if it does not look like it was JUST LIFTED out of the styrofoam, it is used.

New means "NEW." Never Used! Not almost new and used once.

Better then new is TooOlds, Cords, and my boats if we ever get them done
This is what I experience in my industry. If I want to sell as new it has to be sealed in the box. Seals broken the customer is shown. We take all equipment out of the box and set up systems in our shop to programming, so some times the customer never sees any of this. Anything less then that is ripping your customer off!!!! If a product has ever been installed even if it has not seen power then the customer is informed and they can decide if they want new in the box or the new installed but never run (some times they will take it because there are no others available but they make the decision). It never stops amazing me the way that people stretch the trueth with what they are selling.

So then when you buy a 'new'car from the dealership and it has 7 miles on it, still not brand new?
'Brand new' to me, means more like it was JUST made, but could have been used before, and NO ONE has owned it!

What you're mouth Jon! My boat has one hour on it, therefore it can't be new.
In the above case with the dealer, he may be refering to the boat as being "new" if it hasn't been titled. Admitedly, 75 hours is stretch on that. For example, a car maybe sold as new, even though it has 4,900 miles on it-provided that it has never been titled. That's why dealers allow their sales people to drive the cars. It doesn't affect their value!
