28 magnum

Is a 28 magnum and a 28 cig ss the same hull and are they built to the same quality standards? Both look very simular. saw a 1975 28 magnum for sale pos race boat?

ScottB 05-29-2003 07:17 AM

PM Mag27
His name is Mel and can give you the answer.
He races Vixen wich is a Magnum

Fast Shafts 05-29-2003 07:27 AM

The 28 Cigarette was "popped" from the 28 Magnum. There were some changes made to the Cigarette such as wider strakes and a lower freeboard. Both at the time were laid up with "polyester resin"-somewhat obsolete by todays standards, although they ride very well in rough water due to their weight. It takes alot of horsepower to get them moving. There are several old Magnums still racing; "Vixen", "Short Circut" and I hear "Deranged" will be making a comeback.
Hope this helps.
Bob G.

ScottB 05-29-2003 07:34 AM

Don't forget "Grumpy Old Men" another beautiful old Magnum still racing

Fast Shafts 05-29-2003 07:46 AM

Your right Scott, forgot that one!

Mag27 05-29-2003 09:05 AM

Bob G,Vixen is the ode girl of the bunch,Shes kevalar const. and is a good 1200 lb lighter then the others. When we had our misshap in2001 she tore the top deck loose but never pulled a screw out, snapped about 50 screws off on both sides.I thnk i used no less then 8 drill bits redrilling for new screws, that kevelar is some tough stuff. Also, remember George JR. and I ran Deranged a, 1967 28' Magnum and won 2001 National High Points. We use to lap all of the P5, P4, into the P3 and F2's. That was one of the best handling, best turning, and best in rough water boats I had ever been in. It didn't look like much, but ask George about us getting "scolded" by Magnum after Ft. Lauderdale... Something about we "broke out" of P5... Yea... We averaged, 74.9 mph in 6-8 footers. Check the record...

Ben

Fast Shafts 05-29-2003 12:09 PM

Mel,
What year is Vixen? Also curious as to how much she weighs-I'm restoring a 28' 1967 Magnum and have not had it on a scale.
"Kevlar 49" did not come out untill the late 1970's. Sandy Satullo (Copper Kettle) had the first Kevlar offshore racer. Are you sure Vixen is Kevlar?
Ben,
I guess Deranged lapped the other P4 and P5 boats because it was not legal?????

Mag27 05-29-2003 12:21 PM

YEP YOU SURE DID BREAK OUT,and if I remember right you broke everything else on that old GAL too. What a waist when you had no compition anyway.
If my guys had pulled that **** id have fired them on the spot.I believe Dave and Ken felt sorry for yous and towed you in with Vixen.

MEL TEAM VIXEN

Mag27 05-29-2003 01:27 PM

George,Vixen is a 72,and Icant prove she is kevlar, but she is one of two that were built special with a v windscreen. The story i got from the man i got her from, who i never met untell a year after i bought her off the back row of a car lot for a bill owed the lot owner.was arronow built her extra light so when the front was loaded she would ride normal. He bought her on a drug sale around 73 or 4 and run her tell he couldnt pay for new eng.and drives and let her sit out and go to ruin untell i found her. When i got her done, and i wasnt trying to save on weight at time complete no fuel she went 4420lb.Now that may have changed a little over the last 3 years but not much. When i tried to get a glass man to help me on the front deck he turned me down because he didnt know how to work kevlar. So George thats all i can tell you. MEL TEAM VIXEN

cartman 05-29-2003 03:20 PM

Hey mag27 do you have any pics? what kind of power are you running?

Mag27 05-29-2003 03:46 PM

Robert, sorry about posting george instead of Robert but I guess I was still thinking about that Lauderdale race Ben was talking about.I wanted to say also that the day i met the fellow who had owned Vixen it was after a polker run here in Ft. Myers and he was about 3 sheets in the wind and I didnt put to much stock in what he was babbling about. The only thing I do know is she was issued a title by the state and she never had any no.on the hull. Also when we were at the Magnum factory they had no record of her being built.I guess she could have been built any time and seeing she looked like a 72 thats what they titled her as. I know every Magnum owner I have taulked to give thier dry whgt.at 5600 to 5800 lbs an thats what makes me purty shore she is kevlar. And also trying to drill thrue her to change anything is real pain.

Mag27 05-29-2003 04:29 PM

Mag27 05-29-2003 05:54 PM

Fever Mike, your opening a real can of worms here but it is kind of interesting.I will tell you what I know, first back about 2 years ago at the Lauderdal race i met Geo, Katrinas son. He taulked about bringing back the 27 Mag.for factory 1 and a lot of other things.About a couple months later I heard they had gotten the molds for the hull out but there was no top deck molds, also I believe when the man that bought Deranged needed a top deck they made him one for a Maltess wich is a later model boat. Now if Arronow took the top deck molds when he sold the co.he could sell any amount of Magnums under the table on a Cig. hull and with out no. who would know the difference.Espesially if these were going into the drug trade.Just a thought Mike. Cartman i heard that "thirsty pilgrim" was at Coughlan Machine in Norwood Mass..is that where you saw it? Tom Coughlan Throttled on that boat at one time, I dont know how long ago. There was a picture of it at Coughlan machine getting BIG air. Ive been meaning to go look at it ..i think old Magnums are cool..

Hey guys:

I just wanted to throw in a small request! I maintain a Magnum Showcase page on our TeamVixenRacing.com website and I would LOVE for you old Magnum owners to send me a picture and some info to add to the page! I have about 7 boats on display: Short Circuit, White Knight, Grumpy Old Men, Deranged (soon to be Pirate Racing), and a few other privately owned boats from around the world.
Here is a link to the page:

Thanks!!!

Fast Shafts 05-29-2003 11:27 PM

Maybe I can clarify some things. The 28' Magnum race hull (Like Maltese Magnum or White Knight) was spashed, shortened and cut down to become the 27 Magnum Sport (Deranged, Vixen, Grumpy Old Men)
The 28' Magnum Race hull was also splashed and cut down to become the 28 Cigarette. The Strakes were widened for the 28 Cigarette to help it plain better.
The 28' Maltese Magnum is the same hull as the raceboat, but with a different deck.
Then there were multiple other splashes of all these boats.
I think I have this accurate, I really need to get a life!

Mag27 05-30-2003 07:25 AM

In Naples a man by the name of Roger Mund who i am sure some of you know because he`s raced with Dr. Santiago, can give you more inf.on the early Mags. then anybody i know. From what he`s told me he was with Arronow when he built the 27 and even was the owner o f the no. 1 hull for a while.Man if we could get him on here he could ansewer a lot of questions. MAG27

ScottB 05-30-2003 07:35 AM

Roger is from Brick NJ and used to Race a 27 Magnum called Jolley Roger in the 70's. I think after that he raced Spirit of Panama.
The last I saw him he was racing an A class boat in 1995 in WPB
A boat called Team Mean Green

cobra860 05-30-2003 08:18 AM

Some more info on the magnum.
If I remeber right, one of the first magnums 27 that Don Aronov raced with, had outboards, He sold it after a race called getingloppet in Sweden. This was in 1967?68?
This magnum, was raced for some years, and then the hull was used for making a mould, this was the sold under the name Avanti. This was then copied by several other scandinavian boat manufactures. And is still sold up here in the north under many names.

So this exelent hull is probably one of the most copied hulls ever..

This is one of the boats still prodused which is most likely a old magnum hull.

Hauling Trash 05-30-2003 03:35 PM

This is some GREAT Magnum History

But whos got the olds magnum racing still today ,My is 1972

rainmn 05-30-2003 03:43 PM

I concur, Roger Munn would be awesome to have on here. Jolley Roger is the first race boat that I really remember from when I was a little kid, and my dad was taking me to the races. Anyone remember BBPBRA?
His old shop, Roger's Speed Shop is about two minutes from my house. Pretty sure it's long since closed, but still has the original signs up.

cartman 05-30-2003 03:59 PM

Glad to see so much interest in old magnums. Yes too slow that is the boat, hull appears to be solid but it's a real project needs everything. Anyone rember it racing? :D

dammmagnum 05-30-2003 04:51 PM

27 Magnums

Hello,
In the mid to late 70s I had a 27 Magnum Sport called Sea Wraith later to be come Plum Crazy(it was purple/white). We ran around the Bay with Roger and the several other 27 Magnums. Roger was the first to run over 80MPH with Big blocks and MDS drives,, Bud Crisp had a yellow Magnum(Rated X) speedmasters that was pretty fast(low 80s), there was Roger's brother-in law Gary that had a blue Magnum that ran in the high 70s. and there was Don who owned the Harley dealership in Point with an all white Magnum that would run low 80s.
Billy Martin (Bounty Hunter) would be out there with his Sport Fisherman. Roger and Billy raced for years together, Billy also raced an old 28 Magnum with a single engine in it and it was purple also.
i always wonder if, my purple/white Magnum is still around,
Sold it to a good friend of mine who sold it to a woman that lived in South Jersey
one day will get another one
jim

rainmn 05-30-2003 07:25 PM

damnmagnum, I don't know if your old boat is still around today, but I do remember yours, along with all the others you mentioned, from when I was a kid.
Was it just me, or was pretty much every boat in those old Barnegat Bay races a Magnum?

tripps 05-30-2003 08:31 PM

Yes those Magnums were something else, by the way I now this doesn't count ,cause you guys are talkin about flat decks, not sedans,bu t my sedan weighs 5400 with a single bbc. It does run quite well in rough water, but no one wants it!! All I know is I did a ton of work to it and it needs a new home! any body intrested ?
Tripps

georges 05-30-2003 08:38 PM

Dammmagnum:
There is a very sad looking hull with the name "Plum Crazy" on the side, sitting in a boat yard next to Miami airport.
There used to be a race boat with the same name, run by the Ballasch brothers from somewhere in PA, but I believe their boat was a Manta.

Steve 1 05-31-2003 06:02 PM

The 28 Magnum was built by Mr Harry Schoell (the ole Master)also he built a 23 Magnum that was built out of a Mica faced mold.that I believe was for Doctor Magoon.

That 23 was also popped for a whole host of 24 footers still being sold today under a bunch of names.

The first 28 foot Cigarette mold "stuck" and was sunk behind Cigarette it was Bobby Saccenti who as a matter of fact paddled the sinking mold out in the channel (they Hole sawed the thing)

It should still be there to this day.

Hauling Trash 06-01-2003 08:20 PM

ttt

cartman 06-01-2003 08:26 PM

Sounds like they are solid built boats and will be around for some time still.:)

Steve 1 06-01-2003 09:18 PM

Fred the first one I saw complete a long ---------> time ago I thought it was the Baddest thing on earth,Just could not take my eyes off it.

Mag27 06-02-2003 06:23 AM

When I rebuilt The Vixen I wasnt trying to make her into a show boat.I knew that I had a good solid hull and deck and all the wood was in good shape, and that between racing, hauling her all over and changing different engine combos.she was going to get banged up some.At the end of race season the engine and drive get pulled and replaced with a 502 525 i keep just for her,and now she is my pleasure boat for the winter. When I get to old f or all this fun I look forward to redoing her one more time so she can look like some of the great Magnumms of the past too.Its seems strange taulking about a piece of glass and wood like its human but I really think this old gal has a spirit all her own, like all the great Magnums of the past. Anybody know what ever happened to L'il Rhino (S-US1) (S-254)?

Fast Shafts 06-02-2003 09:00 AM

Lil Rino was not a Magnum, I belive it was a Mirage. The boat was sold to a guy in Jersey, raced a few times in the early 1980's, have not seen it since.

cartman 06-02-2003 04:40 PM
