What oil are you running in your boat?

After voting, specify brand and viscosity in a post.

PhantomChaos 06-20-2003 12:22 AM

Baby oil........or sometimes 3-in-1

Mr. Demeanor 06-20-2003 01:00 AM

Mobil but, Valvoline has a new synthetic oil out that may only be sold at NAPA. Thats the only place Ive seen it anyway. Its called "Not street legal" and comes in a straight 50wt. They claim that it has extra additives that will clog and destroy a catalytic converter hence the name. Its also cheap! Under $3 a quart if I remember correctly.

enticer 06-20-2003 05:41 AM

what ever they have in that bulk bucket. it's the cheapest.

CigDaze 06-20-2003 07:25 AM

Valvoline VR1 straight 40.

26scarab 06-20-2003 07:28 AM

Amsoil 20w-50

Shane 06-20-2003 07:33 AM

AMSOIL 5W-30 in the truck and wifes car. AMSOIL 20W-50 in the Formula, AMSOIL SERIES 2000 Racing Two Stroke Oil in the Skater sleds, weedwacker, chainsaw, leaf blower etc., Amsoil in the Waverunner 1400 4-Stroke and all other miscellaneous items i.e. lawn mower, snow blower etc.

I also run AMSOIL SERIES 2000 Racing Gear Lube in all gear cases, chain cases (sleds), differentials etc.

mr_velocity 06-20-2003 07:47 AM

Redline in everything.

Here's just one reason why

jpclear 06-20-2003 09:02 AM

Amsoil 20-50. Series 2000 racing gear oil in outdrive.

Sydwayz 06-20-2003 09:03 AM

Not running a DAMN THING, as the boat and truck are just sitting there waiting for the rain to stop. Mobil1 waiting in EVERYTHING though.

THRILLSEEKER 06-20-2003 09:19 AM

Does KY qualify as "other synthetic" :D

Valvoline VR1 40wt, its the easiest to get in my area;)

bobby daniels 06-20-2003 01:18 PM

We just did one of these polls for oil and outdrives ??????

AmSOIL in even my generator,,,and redline in my gearboxes and drives ,

Mr demenor be careful being a guiene pig with that NAPA VALVOLINE OIL I know some horror stories about that kind of stuff and straight 50 is way to heavy unless you have no bearings at all or top fuel clearances ,really

JUST USE ANY GOOD NORMAL WEIGHT SYN. AND YOU'LL BE FINE MY 2 CENTS IS STAY AWAY FROM CONV. OIL IN BOATS ,,,but this subject has been killed on this board in the last 5 months
good luck :D :D :D

Tres 06-20-2003 01:29 PM

Royal Purple

The only oil that we use at Martin Offshore is Royal Purple unless customer wants otherwise...It goes in all my race boats, my trucks, everything!

Tres

Tim G. 06-20-2003 01:38 PM

Just plain ole 40 wt Kendall. $1.69/qt. Changed every 25 hours with a Merc oil filter.

mopower 06-20-2003 01:58 PM

Here's a new for some of you guys...Silogram (red) 20-50.
I got about 4 hrs on my new engines and my builder sez dump the oil now and go with this.
$85 for a 5 gallon bucket...it better be good:rolleyes:

Hot Duck 06-20-2003 05:10 PM

Mobil 1 Synthetic (15w 50) in the engines for the boats and tow vehicles.

Royal Purple Max Gear Lube for both the boats and tow vehicles.

Mad Hatter 06-21-2003 01:33 AM

I just changed my oil today, I'm running mobil 1 15w50. Any body hear of any problems running synthetics with roller cams?

Padraig 06-21-2003 06:12 AM

Mobil 1 15w 50 in the Velocity and Mobil 1 5w 30 in the Burban. I like Royal Puple and run it in the drive but I don't have a distrib. any where near me.

Yes folk tales , GM runs it on there rollers ,do a search on syn oils
it in here:D :D

GO4BROKE 06-21-2003 06:41 PM

Yes, roller cam damage with synthetics is an urban legend these days. If it was true, every corvette since 1992 (first year with LT1 if I remember right) would be replacing cams and lifters at every LOF. They come from the factory with Mobil 1 in the engines.
I use Mobil 1 15w50 in my motors, 220 hours, no problems. Buy it in the 5 qt jugs at Walmart when they have them, its cheaper that way.

Mad Hatter 06-23-2003 04:25 PM

A couple local guys were telling me I was nuts for running synthetic. I feel much better now ;)

mr_velocity 06-24-2003 09:11 AM

I have another question for this post. Why do a lot of people use multiple brands?

Amsiol in the engine, Redline in the drives
Mobil 1 in the engine, Royal Purple in the drives
Any other combination you can imagine.

Why not just stick with one brand? If Royal Purple is the best for your drive why wouldn't their motor oil be best for your engine?

sgrady 06-24-2003 10:19 AM

Amsoil !

Man what a tale ,,merc dealer I'm sure !! there are alot that work well in drives

REDLINE SYN>HEAVY SCHOCK PROOF GEAR OIL is the best I've found it leaves a proctive field on the gears and buffers the gears (shockproof))and is very slick and shear proof ,the drive should shift better also ,,,hope my stock in it goes up now ,(just kidding ):D :D :D

No Limits ! 01-30-2004 05:52 PM

I use Mobil 1 in everything also, Scarab 15 x 50, Sequoia 5 x 30, F-250 5 x 30, generator 10 x 30, Scag lawnmower 10 x 30, and Honda Pacific Coast 15 x 50. I used it faithfully in my Excalibur 15 x 50 that I just got rid of for 4 years with excellent results.

p.s. I also work for ExxonMobil, but still have to buy at WallyMart.

H2Xmark 01-30-2004 06:02 PM

was using mobil1 15-50 but have just switched to royal purple 20-50,
