o.k. I gotta get in this one Formulafasttech, right on even if the new cobra can run a line faster than a TA the total quality is like all ford products cheap interior, uncomfortable seats, lacking suspension, etc. The new cobra has awful steering. If you want a car to drag with o.k. buy the ford if you want a car to tear ass with on the street (taking turns at 50 sideways) buy a GM product.
|
You think Ford interiors are cheap compared to GM's? I'm a little surprised by that one.
I was a car audio / alarm installer for about 10 years, which gives you the chance to disassemble the interiors of about every car known to man. GM interiors are by far, the worst I ever worked on. My biggest pet peeve with them is the way they screw interior pieces in with self-tapping sheet metal screws. No pre-drilling, no inserts for the screws, nothing. They just hold the piece in place and zip the screws in, typically strippinng the hole out in the process. Ever wonder why all GM's rattle within a matter of a few years at best? When I started in that business, GM, Ford, and Chrysler all had about equally crappy quality interior construction. Over the years, I saw major improvement on Chrysler and Ford, but none on GM at all. Sure, the styling improved somewhat, just not the quality. |
JohnG,
No offense, but are you reading the same post as I am? "sell them for MSRP"????? After reading this post, you would have to do better than that to draw a crowd from here! The F150 lightning is a pickup truck that would outrun the new Goat! |
|
rainmn: sorry I came across wrong, The quality isn't what I was talking about. Its the look and feel if the interior that I was referring to.
|
I see. Still a matter of preference I guess. I have an Excursion XLT with grey cloth. It has the most boring interior you can imagine, but I like it. I'd take it over an Escalade, Denali, or Navigator anyday, where most people probably wouldn't.
I guess I'm sort of partial to boring - I don't really like flashy boat graphics too much either. :D |

1969 was a nasty mustang in its day even , no quality but get fun to drag but poor weight transfer and had 351 windsor wimpy motors ,,the clevland really brought the mustang to life ..I worked at a place that fixed ford super cars and did tons of motors ((Holman moody)) nascar, boats ect. we had to drive Fords ,I had a 69 boss 429 and 302 and a 70 boss 302 and a 71 boss 351 they were alot of fun but you could not get the cars to hook up back then
HOLMaN MOODY or HOLMAN AUTOMOTIVE now makes original GT-40'S in Charlotte ,John holman the founders son Lee runs it and they still do some cup motors for woods brothers ,we did DAVID Pearsons cars and Motors Years ago A BOSS 429 would destroy a T/A year to year but now the T/A hooks up and the old 429's just melt the tires/// look at this link ---HOLMANMOODY LOOK AT THE LINK ABOVE ITS HISTORY ------------------ |

Now we can tell who REALLY knows NASCAR. How many people besides Bobby and I ever heard of Holman/Moody? Most people into the history of offshore would, since a bunch of boats were running their engines in the 60's and 70's. :D |
That thing doesn't look anything like my 69 GTO did. I'm sure it doesn't sound like it did either.
Call it a GTO and I won't buy it. Give it a new name and I would at least take a look at it. I think it shows a great lack of imagination that car manufactures have to use classic car names to draw attention to their products. Especially when the results are so poor. |
SONICDRIVER, I BELIEVE YOU WILL FIND GTOs GOING FOR THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS OVER MSPR!DEALERS ARE BUYING ALLOCATIONS FROM OTHER DEALERS AT MSRP.AFTER THE FIRST THOUSAND HIT THE MARKET THEN PRICES MIGHT FALL, BUT THERE IS A LOT OF PEOPLE WILLING TO PAY A PREMIUM'S TO BE THE FIRST ON THE BLOCK WITH A NEW PRODUCT
|
JOHN G, Your last sentence is the ONLY reason dealers will get MSRP and over for the new GTO. People who pay that, and there will be some people who do, are just adult teenyboppers who want the newest thing, while other people who know value and true American muscle would rather cut their left testicle off then pay anything close to MSRP.

Guys, this is 2004!
The auto manufactures are not going to re-build the old muscle cars of the 60's and 70's so get over it. Motors, interiors, trannys, exteriors, all of this is going to look different and the GTO of 2004 is no different. Here is a clip of a guy doing a burnout on a new GTO HERE If they brought back the looks, feel, performance of the old cars, people would be bashing them for not handling as well or not as reliable etc... |

I had a 1965 goat and if there going to bring the car back, Bring it back as a Muscle car Not a Half Ass Grand Am with a WS6 motor package, Speaking of the WS6 they should bring back the Fierbird and Camaro bad move on GMs part. Ford is going to kick ass big time with its 2005 Mustang GT.
My Trans Am is awesome and still turns heads. I have a family and its the closest I will ever get to a Corvette. |
It looks like a messed up egg and to put the GTO name on it is a stinky omelet.
That car will be produced for 2 years and hit oblivion like all their revamping. |

I miss my 1989 Turbo Trans Am :(http://www.89tta.com/ttahist.htm
|
My first car was a '65 Tri-Power convertible, second car was a '69 Judge RamAir IV.
I now have a '69 convertible, RamAir IV, M22 Rock Crusher, 4.11 Posi. Bring that cavalier look-a-like to the track and see what happens when the light turns green.............;) :) |
You guys have to realize that the 04 GTO was not designed in the US, and is not built here either. It's Australian. Holden.
And I like it. So do the car magazines. |
Direct comparison right from the pages of Motor Trend Magazine:
1968 GTO 400 CI 360 hp 445 ft. lb. torque 4 speed manual weight 3650 lbs. 0-60 6.5 1/4 mile 14.80 @ 96.00 mph Braking 60-0 150 ft. 2004 GTO 346 CI 350 hp 365 ft. lb. weight 3725 lbs. 6 speed manual 0-60 5.3 1/4 mile 13.62 @ 104.78 mph Braking 60-0 120 ft. So, jafo, what was the best time your cars ran in the quarter?? Seems to me the new car is pretty dang quick. |
Originally posted by MrOffshore The new GTO is a complete and total joke...some people need to lose there jobs over this one, it's almost criminal. The concepts were pretty nice...but the actual car is generic at best, nothing more than Pontiac has had for the past decade. It's overpriced and has nothing to do with its heritage...it's almost as bad as the compact LeMans they were running a few years back with a GTO sticker on it. Might as well cut the losses now and run for the hills...destroy the equipment and close the factory. It just isn't fair that the execs let this go through knowing the factory will close in a year or twos production...all those people will lose their jobs. Honda's are built in America, including the engines. Go buy one of them.... That plant will never go out of business. |
If I were a betting man (and I'm not), I'd bet the GTO sells well. I work in the auto industry, and have for many years.... forcast's are usually pretty good (the t-bird aside I guess), and the forcast we have for our business based on the GTO is pretty good. It's not a high production car.... kind of like the Corvette if you had to make a comparison I guess.
At least GM is putting a rear wheel drive coupe back on the market. Have not had one (other than a couple of Caddy's... one of them an Opel) for some time. |

Being a member of the GTO Association of America & former President of the 14th NW chapter, we are having a hard time welcoming this car to our circle.
Nearly nothing visual on this car resembles or even makes an attempt reminding the enthusiast of the rich heritage deserving of the GTO name. This car doesn't even have hood scoops, which were a trademark of every GTO built from 1964-1974. Rather than continue to digress, I'll end it with the thought of & looking forward to blowing the doors off one in my 1970 Judge. |

IMO that car is least deserving of the GTO Badge than any other GTO including the new 350"net"hp 2004 car. And if your 70 Judge is an All Original car I do not believe in street trim you will blow the doors of the new GTO. Jan |

I owned a 70 Ram Air IV Judge convertible, with the factory exhaust cut out. Installed a set of Hooker headers. Ran one of the first sets of Goodyear "Blue Streaks" with Anson wheels. 4:33 gears in the back, M-22 "Rock-crusher". It ran consistent 12.8's/12/9's at the old Desoto Speedway in Bradenton, Fla. now the Bradento Auto Sports Park or something like that. The Gator nationals were held there for many years. It was not some local (optimistic timing system) track. It was a good one. If you can fine one with the Ram Air V motor, you've got a high 11 low 12 second car. Those things were 427 Vette killers. I've only seen two in my life. And the exhaust is like the Vette's.
|
We have a 1998 Trans-Am Ram Air and a 2001 Corvette. At least they have unique lines and don't look like every other car out there.
Cheers! Patti |
