What is your Tow Vehicle/What are you Towing?

What's your tow vehicle and what are you pulling with it?
I searched past threads, but didn't get as much info as I wanted.
Please add any pros and cons on the tow vehicle...
Preference? Gas or Diesel Why?

Playn 06-27-2003 10:59 PM

Did have a 99 Suburban 4x4 as a tow vehicle but now use a 01 F250 Crew cab PSD 4x4. I like the diesel if nothing else for the lack of effort it takes to tow anything I can throw at it. I got the crew cab for the kids and the lariat option makes it pretty nice inside. We also have an 03 Yukon but really haven't towed anything with it but I imagine it would be similar to the old suburban other that the shorter wheelbase (which I don't really like).

I tow the F2-22 Team Fisher 38 Donzi ZR on a Myco trailer with a 2001 GMC dually, 8.1 litre gas motor with allison trans. It pulls no problem and don have to hit the truck stops for fuel. Diesel in florida is about 15 cents more than regular. So it is slightly cheaper, the duramax goes about 50 miles more than the vortec gas motor.
At 65 k miles i am very pleased with the truck. i have also pulled a 38 hustler through the mountains in Pennsylvania with no problen as well.

2001 2500HD CC with 8.1, Allison trans, and 3.73 gears.
Pulling a 28 Pantera fully loaded about 7000lbs.

Truck looks just like to Too Old's. Pulls the boat great. Didn't want a diesel as its a daily driver and I don't tow long distances more than about 3-4 times a year and only put about 12k miles on a year.

I've gotten as high as 14mpg on the highway at 75mph. I get 9-9.5 towing the boat. The 8.1 and Allison is great package and I'm very happy with it. Ride is also very nice. It does only have C load rated tires which I'm sure helps soften the ride also. If I was towing more, I'd need an E rated tire.

I tow the 310 sea ray sunsport 8200lbs. with a 2001 gmc suburban 3/4 ton with a 8.1 vortech gas motor. The gas is a little rough, but I didn't buy it for that!!

02 Ford F350 diesel and 26' Baha. Had a Yukon, just wasn't enough truck for the boat. With the Ford, I feel like the boat shrunk in half. Tows with ease!!! Lot's of leg room for the driver was very important to me...

'03 Chevy 2500 HD Duramax Allison. Chipped the Duramax with the Edge Power Juice Extreme Chip, 4" Magnaflow Exhaust and the Magnum Force Air Intake. 125 hp and 300 ft lbs more torque. Truck is like a sports car now. Amazing. It's also my daily driver. Tracy has the SS Camaro and we both like to drive the truck. An awsome fun ride, tows incredibly. Diesel power is the only way to go. Tow a '99 32' Active Thunder on Myco tandem trailer.

I have a 2002 Gmc 2500HD Duramax towing RaDiOAcTiVe, a 37 Active Thunder. Boat and trailer is appr. 12K pounds, never been a problem, the Duramax and Allison combo is awesome, great truck. This truck is also for sale, looks good pulling the A.T.:D

Chart 06-28-2003 06:56 AM

2000 PSD Excursion, 4WD. Bone Stock drive train for now. When warranty is up later this year, mild pulling chip may happen.

Also considered a CC SB, but we need a "station wagon" more often than an open bed. Also, the Excursion would fit in our garage, while the 350 was a little too long. Duals would be nice for pulling, but until the XK8* is delivered, the excursion is my daily driver, and I didn't want to put up with duals all the time.

Pull a 30 foot Formula on a steel MYCO trailer, about 10,500 lbs. Plus PSD Excursions weigh around 8,000 lbs., which is more than the pickups. With that much weight, we don't win many trailer races, but the truck handles it very well. All together, I'm very pleased with the PSD Excursion.

*Note to anyone with an extra XK8 they want to donate to the Chart Home for Way-ward Boys, please PM me:D

'03 Dodge 3500 4x4 Cummins High output, 6 spd 18mpg nontow, 11-12mpg towing the 380 PQ (14,500lbs with trailer).
This thing is SMOOOOOOTH as compared to my '95 Cummins, and I never thought I'd love a truck like I did that one. All three of the major players seem to be getting their act together in regard to the diesels(took GM a while to figure out that they need to let the experts build 'em a diesel) . Once you have one you will NEVER go back to a gasser.

Indy 06-28-2003 09:25 AM

I have a '99 F350 PSD and pulled a 28' Nordic (until last week) and it does fine. We have short steep hills in my area and it takes some chugging to get up, but it does better than the gas engine. I use it as a daily driver too (ugh...) and it gets about 16-18 mpg combined. I'd go diesel again if I had it to do over again.

Diesel gas is cheaper in CT so I save some money, and it gets better gas mileage than gas engines. The diesel is noisy though and gets on my nerves once in a while, but it's a good engine and is made for pulling. I also have to look for diesel gas sometimes, especially when I'm out of town, not all stations carry it. No regrets though...

I have a 02' Chevy 2500HD with the 8.1 litre and allison trans. I pull a lil' 24' Powerquest with it. I had planned on getting a bigger boat, thus the larger truck... now I just pull the boat around like there is nothing back there.

bobby daniels 06-28-2003 12:02 PM

I have a suburban 4x4 2500 with 8.1 ,4.10 gears and a crew cab 4x4 3500 dually 2003 ,dura-max ,all the hop up goodies and I hated diesels with a passion ,I mean Bad ,,,but I bought this truck and Love it its a beast ,,ran a 14.10 in the quarter with 285-70-16 tires to hook up thats screaming for a tank plus it knocks out some good milage !!!! I need these for the family boats and customer boats I tow ,

I did add a 14k lbs class 5 hitch (reese Titian ) to both to be sure the boats would not pass me on the highway as the factory hitchs aren't rated for much

BTW THE RIG WITH 42' (37' REALLY) BEAK BOAT AND CREW CAB LONG BED AND TRAILER WITH DRIVE GAURDS 65'7" LONG ,FUN,FUN BUT IT BOOGIES

Allan4 06-28-2003 12:21 PM

1982 Ford Econoline, V6, Disco ball, Shaggy carpet, Strobe lights, vibrating bed, hand pump for blow up dolls. Pulls my 48' Viking okay, hard up hills. Mileage okay when hitting on all 6 cylinders. Hard on brakes though.

I want to step up to a Gremlin, I here they ride better.....

*****Disclaimer*****I DO NOT PULL A 48' VIKING WITH A FORD VAN*****

Actually....one of 3....94 Chev 1/2 ton 5 spped, 5" lift, 5.7 4x4 yada yada with all the suspension beefups made (it seems), 92 chev 1 ton 454, or 97 5.7 1500 Suburban.

Pull a 24 Outlaw or that huge trailer mounted 20" tall Kahn's weiner cow if I can find it......

:D

Just bought mine yesterday. F250 PSD 4x4. I can't say how it pulls, I just had the hitch installed today. I got to drive the old 99 F 150 today to New Port Richey, and Deb took my new truck to Lakeland. She loves it, I hope I get it back!:)

Does installing a chip void the warranty?

Towed the 24 baja with a 97 Tahoe did pretty good! Just bought an 03 Crew Cab 2500HD with a Duramax I will be taking the boat out next weekend (break in miles) and I will let you know.

boat nut 06-29-2003 09:30 PM

I will be towing a 37AVH ACTIVE THUNDER. It is being shipped to me this coming week!!

Very recently i purchased a 2003 GMC 2500HD, SLT, crew-cab, short bed, 4x4 pick up truck, with the Duramax Diesel engine, and the Allison automatic transmission. I now have a little more than 4000 miles, and getting approx. 17MPG around town.

I had it boiled down to either the Ford or Chevy/GMC. I believe they are both great diesel trucks, and you wont go wrong picking either one.

97 F250 P/S 4WD 355 rear end = excellent mpg- 22 w/o boat, 17.5 w/boat.

Tows my 27' Formula w/steel trailer great! 27' (approx 8k lbs) is probably max with this gear ratio. Anything bigger and would probably want a lower gear. Although I did pull a friends 29 Fountain with no problems.
