Mufflers

I KNOW THIS HAS BEEN ASKED BEFORE BUT I HAVE NOT BEEN ON IN AWHILE,I AM LOOKING TO BUY CLAMP ON 4" SWITCHABLE MUFFLERS. DOES ANYBODY HAVE A SUGGESTION AS TO WHICH ONES ARE THE BEST.THEY ARE GOING BEHIND A BIG BLOCK WITH A LITTLE OVER 600 HP.

Raypanic 06-28-2003 09:21 AM

I have a bit more hp than you, but couldn't get a good tune on the EFI's with brand X switchable mufflers. Installed two pair of IMCO gatlins (zero back pressure) and I have the sweetest sounding motors on the lake, also no fouled plugs and a clean transom. See if you can't find someone who may have a set in your area and get another opinion...

Drew Marine Shotguns....Meet requirements for a permanent full time muffler and you loose NO horsepower. Adjustable and a very good price. $450 a set.

My question is; how can switchables not change back pressure? I personally killed a lot of spark plugs being a nice guy and idleing into a mirina with my old set...

Anouther reason to use the Shotguns....The backpressure is what opens the butterflies....And the amount of backpressure that it takes to open the butterflies is adjustable....

Are you making these mufflers in your shop? I cant see you spending that much money for three sets with you and Jamie having machine shops,, :D :D If so, work me up a price,as I mention in my post to you about noise reducers I would like to be able to boat in Mich and Ohio!!

Sounds like everyone is happy with the HPI's...What is the cost for the HPI's for 4" tips. Also what are the dimensions on them?...Looks are important everything else being equal...Also one thing to keep in mind is the Shotguns allow almost NO REVERSION and actually increase torque...Anybody got pictures and prices of the HPI's

Peconic 07-06-2003 12:34 PM

The trouble with the shotguns is that they are absolutely useless at high RPMs. I paid $900+ for a pair of HPI clamp-ons, minus a "10% or 15% OSO-discount" as per HPI's Dan. If HPI moves their prices closer to the rest of them, then they will be very competitive.

The Shotguns have 4 different adjustments to make. Also according to Drew they have different springs you can use if needed to limit the total amount of travel of the butterflies... He mentioned that 1/2 way open will support over 700hp with no loss of power..I have read several posts where Drew will adjust the Shotguns a little or no cost even if they are second hand or years old....... The difference in sound level at 1/4,1/2 and fully open is very noticeable....Again I personally like the fact you can adjust the rate/speed of the opening and the amount of opening you want.. I have made several adjustments to mine to get exactly what I want. Are the HPI's adjustable at all? But again the HPI's sound pretty good. Still at twice the cost that is something to consider...

Peconic 07-06-2003 05:01 PM

Hmm. Interesting. I admit no experience with the Shotguns. The consensus here was that they work great at low RPMs, but when the flaps open at higher RPMs, they are open & loud. Live & learn.

I was torn between the Shotguns and HPI, took HPI because of the upper end. Oh, well. I'll report once I have findings.

PS: The way I understand it, no adjustments to the HPIs.

Mufflers

Been there, done that with Shotguns. They are OK at idle, but will not meet any noise regulations anywhere I know of. Loud at anything over idle.

Did you try the adjustments or call the MFG...

Bad Habit:

I tried the Shotguns in every possible setting. I understand clearly how the adjustments work. I am in no way slamming the Shotguns. The are among the nicest looking pieces made and they fit perfectly and appear to be durable.

My personal experience is that they just simply will not quiet the noise adequately to avoid a ticket in the area where I boat. I have talked with boaters and engine bulilders in other areas and they have told me the exact same thing.

Again, a very nice piece, but they did not make nearly enough decibel cut in my application.

Hydro Power 07-07-2003 11:21 AM

Bad-Habit

We do have pictures on OSO in the Classified section. Give me a call and I can fax you the dimensions of our system.

Drew makes a nice piece, but as I have been reading through some of the posts about Drew Marine I keep reading how people have been replacing parts on his system. The one thing to keep in mind with our system is that we don't have any moving parts to break . Once they are installed you are done.

TomR 07-07-2003 01:06 PM

I DON'T NEED NO STINKING MUFFFLERSS!!
Well I don't want any, but unfortunetly the Swamp Swimming, Tree Hugging elitist are getting thier way on to many waterways!!
I went with the Drew Marine Shotguns. They quited my motor, a 502/550hp running thru almost dry Lightning headers.
The problem here is people just don't understand, nor appreciate the music of a fine tuned BBC singing out at 5000+ RPM!

Peconic 07-10-2003 12:55 AM

Reveived my HPI clamp-ons today. Look very nice. No moving parts whatsoever. Through the length of 4" muffler, there is a 2.5" wide open pipe. That pipe is surrounded by a metal spiral. Most exhaust exits straight through the pipe, some through the spiral. That's probably where the muffling takes place. I have no idea how it works, but from the looks of it I can see no serious exhaust obstruction. Next week, they will go on the boat with a very loud HP525. Will report when having results.

Zero Cavity 07-10-2003 07:14 AM

I have been using the HPI for a month and they are great, no more moving parts that can break.
Thanks Dan (HPI) for a good product

rv 07-10-2003 07:30 AM

Dr.Santiago,
What HP engines do you have and did you notice any max rpm change after the install. If so, how much?

Thanks,
Rick

Zero Cavity 07-10-2003 07:53 AM

Mine are 730 HP and did not notice any power change only change is that I can talk now to my family while on the move.

rv 07-10-2003 09:55 AM

Thanks for the update. Sounds like they are doing their job without taking down rpm/hp.

Rick

barry 07-10-2003 03:44 PM

i just ordered a pair of teague st-450's. have not tried them yet. the thing i liked about them was the muffler is in the boat and the tips look like regular tips.

509 SC 07-10-2003 10:06 PM

Dr. Santiago, Just curious if you went with the clamp-on HPI's? Thanks! Steve

Hydro Power 07-16-2003 11:35 AM

I was wondering if you have run the boat ? Let me know what you think.

Thanks
Dan

Zero Cavity 07-16-2003 11:41 AM

509 SC:
Yes, I did the clamp-on.

Cord 07-16-2003 02:10 PM

barry-I have the Teagues on my boat. Now my boat is extremely loud (I'll see if I can get a reading this weekend) and they make a very noticeable difference. I'm proably not legal though. Nice pieces and I'm quite satisfied with them.

aero-offshore 07-16-2003 04:25 PM

anybody have a set of the shotguns used for sale?

Cord 07-16-2003 04:46 PM

I had shotguns on my old boat. The took a little of the bark out at idle, but made no other changes. There are other mufflers out there for about the same money and are much more effective. Their looks are not as good as the Drews though.

burtandnancy 07-16-2003 05:39 PM

Its still my opinion that switchables (legal or not) should not be used with big blowers and EFI. My IMCO Gatlins are 6" dia by 22" long and let out a very mellow, big block sound. Must be a regional thing, lots of them in the west...
