I like the 944's but if I was comparing a 944 to a mustang (notch) I'd get the stang. It will be much easier to modify if you want....and you'll end up spending less and it will be much quicker then the 944. I'd really like to have a 928...but I know the price of the car + upkeep will just be more then I can handle. My brother owns a foreign car repair shop, I took one look at the price of some of the porsche parts and changed my mind real quick. They are awesome cars and if you have the $$ then go for it...if not get the budget man's racecar......

Mustang..... myself and a group of friends all had them when the IROCS were the cool cars at the beach, and that is where they stayed because they couldn't run with the herd. like others have said great car, lots of power and cheap. parts are everywhere. I had a slightly warmed over 88 GT, in 88 you either had mass air or a speed density system. The speed density system can limit your hop up but it also has a more agressive cam in the motor. I only lost one race to something other than a hopped up mustang and that was a vette at about 50mph. I had him of the line but then he just kept going , and going , and going........

944's are sick automobiles...they seem to require a whole lot less maintainence than the 928. chicks dig the 944 too..just the fact that u have a porsche is just plain cool. I see tons of 944's still on the road as opposed to very few 928's so this must mean the 944's work more often. Porsche that works = women that wanna work on you after the ride!@!

Check out this 944 on EBAY. The price definately seems right, and in your price range. Road trip?

I would suggest a Buick Grand National. I had one with the simplest bolt-ons and tires running 12:40s in the quarter. It pulled my old Wellcraft 186 Eclipse too.

Another vote for the 944!!

It will hold it`s value like no other for the $$ spent.

They handle like it`s on rails

I love `em

Got a good story too... back in '86 when Porsche released the 944 Turbo I had to have one... I went into the local Porsche dealer and walked up to the salesman and told him I wanted a new 944 Turbo.. he looked at me up and down (I was dressed like a slob) and he said "Me Too" and went back to reading the paper...

I then took a ride to the next Porsche dealer and bought a brand new bright red 944T off the lot and drove directly back to the dickhead that 'dissed me and said " how do you like my car?" "got any floor mats?"

and his expression was priceless!

Good luck in you search for a new car,
Kurt.

Ok, here goes my 02. The Porshes are nice cars. Only problems is that when they break ( and a Porshe for under 5k will ) they are expensive. Handle great and are fast once you fix them up. As for the mustangs. There is a huge die hard following for that car. I personally dont think they have made a standout mustang since the 1970 Mach 1. The 80's cars are good bang for the buck but I never really found the desings that appealing. Especially the interior which is where you will spend most of your time. But that is subjective to each person. Also, to make them really fast, you need to sink a lot of money into them. Price out what you plan on doing to the car and add that to the purchase price. Then use that as your shopping limit. Use the same philosophy for any car you are looking at to be fair. I have had two camaros. One was a 84 728 with 5.0 and the other is a 88 Iroc Convertible with the TPI 5.0. Both cars are a blast to drive. The convertible is a definate head turner and got the speed to go up against any stock mustang of the period. The limit with them is that the body is not solid due to the ragtop. I would look for a solid roof car. No T tops. To really get some bang for the buck look for a 350 Iroc. Go with the iroc because they have a race bred suspension and will handle better than a mustang or regular camaro. It might not feel like it when you are driving it but they really do. The Grand National is a really fast car. But it is hard to find one for your price range. Then if you do, it will need work. Also, they tent to need a new motor around 90k miles. The escort ZX2 is a nice resonable car but it will not provide what you want. Besides, it is too small of a motor and front drive. My best bet. Find a 1985 or newer Corvette, preferably with the manual. They are very fast, 150 plus, and have a huge amount of torque. Not to mention they handle very well. I had a stock 85 with the manual and smoked a 96 mustang GT. Wasnt even close. Basically, good luck.
