OT - Pop Up window killer
anyone have a good reliable application to kill these darn pop up windows. I had one configure a phone dialer on me, and then dialed my phone. I could not stop it quickly enough and had to reboot to uninstall all of the crap. Phone company says I have to wait a couple of week to find out where I called.

I had one do that to me recently also. I could actually hear an operator asking if she could help me on my speakers!! And she had a brittish accent.....so I'm thinking I made a LONG distance call. Fuc%ing pop-ups!
Are there any free killers around for us cheap bastards?? 'Foul |
my phone company said they have recently had customers call about charges. The call is overseas and they bill the phone company who bills you. Im going to wait and see if they try to charge me anything before I get too excited.

This one is free, it's small, and works great.
http://www.popularshareware.com/Anot...load-2589.html It is identified as 'shareware', but I have been using it for MONTHS. |
I have a problem with popups too. The common killers are not working on this bug. It pops up not using a browser window telling me that in order to kill it that I have to buy their software. Nothing like blackmail!
|
Mrs Cord -
If it is the "Save Now" popups (with the little '$' signs), you can stop them by going thru your Control Panel to 'Add Remove Programs', and uninstall the 'Save Now' mini-program. They are ungodly annoying. |
|
Mrs cord, It sounds like you have some ad ware on your system that is doing nothing but producing pop ups. Ad ware is often hidden in other "free" software. Download AdAware at www.lavasoftusa.com to get rid of it.
Best protection against pop ups ever is to download a browser that can turn off pop ups. i use a browser called opera, and have never, ever gotten a pop up i didnt want. Fewer hackers try to get in your system via opera too, because not many people use it, and hackers tend to exploit microsoft products because they are widespread and hackers tend to hate microsoft. Get opera at www.opera.com it has a ton of other features that make my browsing better. only thing you have to be aware of, is that sometimes you want a popup. The larger images on boattrader are popups. it takes me 2 keystokes to temporarily re enable it...... And now, back to the boats......... |
www.panicware.com for a free pop-up stopper. Also disable Microsoft Messenger as this is used to send a different type of pop-up advertising. In regards to wanted pop-ups, holding down the ctrl key with panicware allows for pop-up windows.
|
I used on for the trial run called Popzilla. It worked well, I don't remember the price.
|
Adsgone there is no better take it from a computer guru
:D |
rouxsterre-I searched for the program, but I wasn't able to find it.
David-although, I do run adaware frequently (and am amazed by what it routinly finds) it only slows these popups, it can't kill them. I also run spybot. The two programs seem to need to run in order to kill everything. |
I just installed a free pop-up killer at the office, but don't remember the name. Do a search at www.pcworld.com - lots of good software on that site.
|
See post #6. It kills everything (in my experience). The only thing it would not kill is an installed adware PROGRAM (see post #8).
The good thing about the popup killer in #6 is that to view BoatTrader ads, you just hold down the Ctrl key and click on the picture. Voila! I can email it to you, if you would like. It's tiny (like 10k). |
One more thing - can you capture a screenshot of the 'blackmail' ad?
When you see the ad, press the 'PrtScrn' key to capture the entire window, or Alt + PrtScrn to capture only the active window (the popup), then open Paint, and choose 'Paste' from the right-click context menu. Save the file as a jpeg, and attach into your next post. |

Actually, just as I was scrolling down to this post, the little bugger came back up. I had run the two scanning programs and they had killed it for about 24 hours.

I also reran Ad-aware. Here the files that it found. Now that the pop-up window has restablished it's self, they are comming about every 3-4 minutes.

Holy cow! When I want to post a big picture I get thumbnails, now that I don't need one, there huge!
BTW-there are several different pop up windows. That looks like the one that points to the originator. The other windows are more advertisments hawking different wares. The all use the same format though. |
the pop-up you are getting is a Microsoft Messenger window. As I said in my previous post: Disable MS Messenger.
|
I'm getting the same Ms Messenger pop-ups on xp-pro-
How do you disable it? Jim |

dockrocker
Next time you go to the office ...get the name and then post it? |
Find 'Services' on your system. Highlight the 'Messenger' service, right-click for 'Properties', and in 'Properties', disable the Messenger service.
Problem solved. I just recently did this with my computer, to resolve the Messenger service popups. |
Go to www.webattack.com and look under freeware. LOts of goodies. You can also get Spybot there which automatically blocks spyware when configured.
|
The panicware works perfect for me with XP
|
Panicware's pop-up stopper seems to be the best of all I tried. The free version is more than adequate.

He is right

spybot was an eye opener for me, loads of crap on my machine that was probably just sucking more crap out of the internet. I am going to try a couple of the free pop up killers and monitor my system with spybot for a few weeks until I get tired of that, then just let everything happen on its own and .....
|
SEt up Spybot to run in full auto silent mode once you get tired of the little warnings popping up. Update and immunize often to block the latest spyware.
Heres a link to the popup killer I use. Its free and has a decent database. If you get a popup, just right click on the bullsey in you tray and add the popup to the list. Real simple. http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...ease_id=151472 |
