cobra cats
does anyone know anything about cobra center console cats? like the 357 sea viper (36ft)?
|
Macvtt,
Do a search on Cobra Cats. I know there was some discussion on them, in the past. If you're not sure on how to do a search, go to the blue tool bar above on this page. Put your cursor on the Forums/Board section and a drop down menu will appear. Click "search" and you'll end up on the search page. Type in Cobra Cats and hit enter. Russ |
Are they made in NJ? I think Sharkey would know about them.
|
Don't know anything about the center console ones, but I've got a 30' performance Cobra. It was built in 1995 at the NJ facility and I've had it about two years. I've had no problems with it other than motor issues recently.
The factory is working on a new website www.cobraboats.com and can be contacted by email or phone. Good Luck, Jeff |
Thanks for the info guys. Here is what I got.
36ft cobra center console cat. It has 3 Yamaha 250's on it. The boat should go 83 mph and it only goes 71mph. It has hydraulic jack plates(tried diff. drive height). We run it light on fuel. We have tried 3 bravo 4blade 30s, 3 merc outboard cleavers 14.5x30, 2 bravos and cleaver on center motor. Goes aprox. the same speed with all. I have got a 15.5x30 cleaver on the way for the center motor. We have tried diff setback. The boat will not go faster then 72. Any input would be greatly appreciated. The boat looks kick ass especially for a center console, it just wont run like it should. Thanks |
Can you post some pictures of it???

Too much wind resistance from the center console?
|
Hi, what RPM's are the Yammis' at? what's the compression, nose cone, low h2o pickup? Those are two of the things I did to my '91 Yamaha 250txrp's to get my speed up I'm almost at 100 in a 26 O Express cat with plenty of water press. spinning 15x30 bravo race props at about 54-6000 rpm's( the yammis are torque'e' mothas') I'm planning on shortening the tuner pipes and using a set of 130 psi heads next year. Currently they have 100lbs' per so if I go up a little so will the power band (rejetting, timing etc.) ,but your tripps should be pulling you along at about 80mph, so I don't know what is causing the speed, maybe weight distribution, wish I new ? :)
|
Did you weigh it ??
My center consols ran 78 with 2-225's fully loaded with three people on board. |
Greg: I will take pics this weekend .
Jolley: It has stock 1999 fuel injected Yamaha 250s with Bob's nose cones/low water pickups. It turns aprox 5700 rpms. Steve: I have not weighed it, but if I cannot get any where I will have to. The boat is cored with balsa and foam through out, even all the hatches, leaning post, and center console. What type of center consoles did you have?? Thanks again for any help guys. |
One of my lines of Cats was a 33'x10' One piece center console fishing boat out of a Three piece mold I was very Weight and Balance conscious with them a lot of detail in the tooling.
If you can post a running side shot of the Boat there are an number of Cat guys in here Besides me T2x for an example maybe we can spot something.. Speaking out of turn here sounds like you may be dragging a lot of forefoot also on my triple engine military stuff sometimes I used a Mercury Chopper (fits the Yamaha shaft) on the tunnel motor stock props ether side. Anyway I like Cats and Best of Luck with it. |
Steve: where can I see pics of your boats? What did the chopper do?
Catmando: It is so hard to get to talk to Peter Casini. I have in the past but still have not gotten anywhere.I live in Florida and I know he was in New jersey, now moved to New york. I have a video of a boat on Boat Test Reports that did 83 mph. I have a home video of the same boat used in the test (that I video taped). I Have a video of the boat sitting in the watter with shots of setback, jackplates ,everything above the water line. I dont have shots of the props. I must be missing something. It seems that anyone that I have talked to that has done anything with the 36 cobra feels the boat is a big mystery Thanks again guys I will take pics this weekend. |
The 36 Cobra....is a stretched 30 ( I'll remain mum on where the bottom came from) ...... It has a tendency to plow....because it has both the forward entry of a smaller boat....the tunnel width of a smaller boat.......and too much constant section on the sponson surfaces. I ran one at the Miami boat show for Speedvison some years ago.....and couldn't get the bow up ....with a crane.
I suggest a DRASTIC shift of C/G aft.........(move everything back batteries, pumps, forward locker contents, helm,.......etc).............But , with all that, the problem may not be fixable. It is a VERY bad idea to stretch a design in only one direction. T2x |
I have 94 30 ft.Cobra Terminator cat. I love the boat. It eats up big water and is very stable and fun to drive. I'm runnin twin carbed 2.5 merc outboards, with offshore mids and CLE gearcases. I,m spinnin the 28 cleavers at 6400 rpm and getting mid 80's on the GPS. I want to try 26's to see if I get more top end. I want to run the motors at 7500 and see what I get for MPH. Overall I love it, and a 36 footer sounds even nicer.
Good luck, Johnny |
T2x: Did the boat you tested have a aqua fish paint job in blue? I have herd all diff. ideas on where the design came from, What is the real deal? I have herd about hoss props being the correct prop. If it needs more bow lift then I should try a prop designed to do that, What do you think??
Thanks again everyone |
traded-in / re-sold a '98 36 Cobra C.C last year w/ trip 300 Mercs, jackplates. It was reported to have run over 100 before all the deck rigging(t-top, riggers, cabin finishing, electronics etc.) were done. Saw mid-eighties mph on sea-trial, but it was apparent that much more driving(learning) time was needed to get the maximum out of it. The console/top may be somewhat at issue, here, too. Currently have a '99 36 Cobra Sportboat w/t-
HP500's/Bravos's, that's running into the 90's very easily. Hugh |
hpoffshore: What type/size props where on the trip 300s? I have been trying to find one around that runs good to look at.
thanks again |
Sorry...I can't really remember what pitch the props were(I see too many of them, and I'm also getting old); but they were Spinelli "over the hub" choppers. Not cleavers.
Hugh |
hpoffshore: thanks for the info, sounds like maybe those chopper type props give the boat some bow lift.
Thanks again guys |

jbrauer:
I would assume T2x is referring to the Shadow 30. vtec |
I believe the 30' came from the Chris Cat and I have seen the 30' next to the 36' and it is not a streatched version. It has completely different lines. Now their 31' is an extended/reworked 30'-I saw that work in process.

At the 2 factories in NJ.
'In the loo..'?? |
I give up!....Hello!....Hello!...Is anybody home? Hello?
T2x |
So where did it come from??? Was it the chris cat??
The beam is also diff from the 30 - 36 It does have a narrow tunnel, I took pics of the boat sitting, I will take pics running this weekend. Got the 15 .5in 4 blade lab cleaver today will run this weekend. Also have a 30 Spectre and needed to finish install on the tunnel tab so I have something to take the pics from. Thanks again for all info guys!! |
T2x - You hit the nail on the head with me, I'm not home with with your hint "'In the loo..'??
Why the big secret? In the V-bottom & cat history threads you've named the source of many splashed hulls. So where did the 30' Cobra hull come from??? Jeff |
hey GREG there is a cobra cat center console fishing boat on a lift in cornfield creek right up from my community ramp. its dark blue, when heading into cornfield as you round the first shoal buoy its on the left just past it. cool looking boat never talked to the guy saw it running in the rough before really looked good did notice it leaned outward when cornering.
any luck on selling the boat yet?? Rob |

Cobra on the outside stuck on the water. with 3 O/Bs
|
MXZ800 - Where is cornfield creek? I've never heard of it. Not a lot of progress on selling the boat, but at least a couple pleople are talking about it. Had it out the last two weekends, one run to Key Bridge, the other down past the Bay Bridge. Got to keep all the water used equally you know. We ought to pick a time and try to get together instead of just passing on the water.

In the V-bottom & cat history threads you've named the source of many splashed hulls. So where did the 30' Cobra hull come from??? Jeff There were various changes made in reducing the overall size of the boat..and retooling the deck...and the result was a....... decent........ little cat. One glance at the 36 shows it to be a stretch of the tunnel and sponsons...... overall width appears to be merely a function of deck size on the 36 without expanding the running width and surfaces significantly. The 36 is certainly more narrow for its length than the 30...and the handling is indicative of those proportions. T2x P.S. "In the Loo"...... means in the head...Johnny....toilet.....get it? |
Gazelle now there is a name from the Past.

Any thoughts on this
At about 62mph the boat starts to porpoise and continues to do so at 71mph. Any ideas?? Thanks again |
My 30' motion did the same thing. A tunnel tab completely eliminated the problem
|
T2x - Thanks for the straight scoop.
I hate to see anyone's hard work, $$$'s, and time stolen by splashing. On the other hand, I've really enjoyed my boat so far. Hopefully, it's a stepping stone to a 32 or 36 Skater in the future. Maybe you can help with a set-up question: My boat has twin stock HP500 carbs, 1.36 gears, labbed 30" Bravo's and has run a best of 100 GPS @ 5,200 RPM with four people and about 80 gallons of gas, 85 degrees, about 85% humidity. I'm sure I can get a bit more speed by removing the extra weight but more important, is the source of the porpoise starting in the high 80's. If the water is choppy it disappears. At first I thought I needed to add weight up front to settle the bow down, but now I think it may be sticking and need help releasing from the water. Should I try removing weight from the bow area and relocating as much toward the transom as possible? What do ya' think? |
jbrauer: We also have a 30ft Spectre that started to porpoise at about 50mph and continued up to about 70 mph. Like mmwalters said, installation of a tunnel tab fixes the problem. It maybe the 36 cobra is doing it for a diff reason and it might be a clue to my problem.
Thanks again. |
FOR SALE 36 CAT
I have a 1999/36/cat/ t500 hp's/20hrs, on trailer price to sell CALL HARRY JUDGE 410 827 0097

Most cats will porpoise in transition from hydrodynamic to aerodynamic lift.......... and many will benefit from either a wedge in the tunnel or a tunnel tab....
However in the case of a very narrow "stretch" design...the boat will never have enough air packed in the tunnel to truly lift it...so the porpoise may not be curable. My advice is keep the 36 footer as a 65 mph fishing platform, and don't take it too seriously as a performance cat. T2x |
fishing... what is that??? our only problem is we wouldnt know what end of the fishing pole to hold.
I am guessing a wedge goes at the back of the tunnel and keeps more air in to give more lift.. |
