The Key West OS WORLDS are a GO, by Lee Mills!!
Key West, September 17, 2003
We are very proud to be entering our third consecutive year of producing the Key West Offshore Worlds November 17-23, 2003, a tradition in Key West for over thirty years. We do NOT cancel our events and never have! This is the cornerstone of our corporate mission statement. It is critical that our race team participants, sponsors, fans and media know that they can all depend upon us fulfilling our obligations, without excuses. We are delighted to hear from so many race teams in the last two days who have expressed their strong commitment to participate in this year’s Worlds here in Key West. Please visit our website www.keywestosworlds.com to see the complete schedule of events and parties which have been planned for all of you. The preparations have been in the works for over 10 months and are either completely dialed in or in process of completion well before your arrival here in Key West. As a matter of policy, we normally do not respond to rumors and misinformation disseminated by a very small group of people. But at the urging of so many race teams in the last few days, we felt we should honor their requests by issuing this release to clarify a few false and misleading rumors. We have been seeking over the last two months, in good faith, to negotiate a fair and reasonable sanction agreement with the management of APBA Offshore. We are very disappointed that their position was both non-communicative and intransient. I suppose that this is their right, but it represents a cold and insensitive attitude towards the race teams and event promoters they should be looking out for. We saw this coming a few weeks ago and accordingly established our own independent website and instituted a direct mail marketing campaign to keep the race teams, fans and sponsors informed. The United States Navy is currently spending twelve million dollars to update and vastly improve the area which we will be using for our race village, including the dry pits, wet pits, hot pits, winners circle and spectator viewing area. We are in touch with them on a weekly basis to coordinate all of our efforts to insure that upon your arrival the race village will be up to our standards. In fact, I’m happy to report that the demolition of certain structures have created additional property available for our use and the resurfacing should greatly reduce the issue of dust, something that we have had to contend with in prior years. The hot pits, tech inspection area and wash down area are all together and can accommodate a larger number of boats. The parking lot can now accommodate nearly one thousand cars. We are setting up a special race team parking lot for your vehicles in the actual dry pits to reduce the distance you’ll need to walk. We will shortly be posting on our website a site plan of the race village with all these various locations identified. You will be able to call ahead and reserve your spot in the dry pits as opposed to finding out where you will be when you show up. With respect to our permitting, the process began in January with specific requests submitted in July. The City of Key West does not require an assembly permit to hold an event. For the use of public property, like the closure of Duval Street for the Friday evening block party, permitting is a fairly routine matter which is handled by our City Manager. We have been working closely with tom Oosterhoudt, the city commissioner in whose district the OS Worlds will be held. He has issued the following statement for use in this letter: “I am delighted on behalf of my district and the entire city of Key West that the OS Worlds will be held here November 17-23. It is a full week of exciting events, and Lee and I have been closely coordinating the permitting activities and other requirements surrounding the production of the OS Worlds. I look forward to seeing you at the races.” Although we have invited race teams from around the world to participate in this event we are adhering to the format, class structure and model which the APBA Offshore participants have been used to this year. Additional classes, such as super stock will be offered to accommodate teams which have not raced with APBA Offshore. Your team will not be placed in five or six broad categories, as some rumors have suggested. We will be updating our website www.keywestosworlds.com on a frequent basis to provide you with the latest information regarding every aspect of this event. If you have not made your plans already, we would urge you to do so, as the hotels will increase their rates as we get closer to the event. We are all looking forward to seeing you back in Key West for a week of racing, excitement and parties at an event that continues to be enhanced with activities for everyone to enjoy in the Southernmost City. Here's a stupid question for you guys. Why are there so many different "race" organizations? SBI, APBA, and whatever the others are. Why isn't there just one governing body like NASCAR or the NFL? How did it get split up, and why?
|
Please pass the popcorn..
I cancelled Key West reservations this morning, thank you... PS--Mr Nort---Where are photos from your vacation ??? |
Luckily, I hadn't made my reservations yet.
I guess in this case, it pays to procrastinate.;) Mr. Mills: although I applaud your courage for posting on this board, you might be missing one itty-bitty detail. Race teams. I'm sure they are incredibly unhappy with all this BS and schedule changing. Why would ANY of the teams with a reasonable chance to win the APBA title race with you? Short answer, they won't. The only thing that might potentially save your boat count will be the fact that it is a week later than the REAL worlds, and some rooms/hotels, etc. will be non-refundable. that will be the ONLY reason the TOP teams will go. Good luck and enjoy your last race as mentioned above. I certainly will not attend, but what do I know, I'm just a fan. |
This is more confusing then a NJ jug handle!
   Is this Guy serious? |

Are you out of your F**%^$ mind! Lee you should hide. I maybe in KW but not to race at this point. Does the town know there will be no boats? I would love to see a list of what teams you think will race. Better yet if ANYONE is racing in KW please speak up. Lets see the list of all your race teams. It sickens me to think a bunch of hard working teams wont race this year at a world championship race because they had plans to be in KW not Alabama. The best you could do is call APBA and work this out as your last race.
MD :hothead: |
Will the real APBA post something that is the truth ?
|
Has anyone wondered how much the sanction fee is for a world championship? I believe that a national event fee is on the high side of $150000. It's possible the hotels and businesses aren't helping. Isn't that why John Carbonell didn't run into the harbor a couple of years ago?
I have been going to KW since 1984, and love it. But it is all about dollars, none of these people are in this thing to lose money. Well, except the racers:crazy: Which is really unfortunate. My hat's off to you guys, where ever you go!:eureka: John B |
Lee Mills is a Key West Piece of crap, we just canceled our reservations see ya in Orange Beach.

Lee, isn't the sanction fee pretty much set? In other words, you tried to wring as much money as possible out of the Racers. And when the management of APBA Offshore-LLC stood up for the racers, you didn't like that, did you? I'm tired of your attempts to screw the racers every chance you get. Your ideas of "screw the racers, they have the money!" pisses me off just thinking about it. I hope the good people of Key West see what you've done to them when you screwed the pooch. Hopefully, they'll ask us back next year, without you. |
2 words.....Deerfield Beach
|
Mr. Mills, seems to me if you originally agreed to an amount for the sanction fee, you should stick to it. If, over the last two months you tried to "negotiate a fair and reasonable sanction agreement", it obviously means that for the preceding 10 months you knew what that agreement was. I don't know all the details, but it seems like you tried to put APBA-Offshore over the barrel and didn't figure that they'd have "the stones" to tell you to screw off. You can't change the rules after the game has started, which I think you tried to do. And all you've done is hurt the sport and the people who support Offshore Racing. Go to he**.
|
Whats the price of getting into this race and what class should I race my 92 Four winns Liberator in? Sounds like I'm a shoe in for victory. My grandkids will never know the truth when I tell the story.

Nice try sucka!
Lee Mills your a piece of crap! Take another hit out of the ole bottle! Funny that the Mayor of KW said you had no permits! Brian Hollis

If I get cancer of the azz can I get my lawer to go after you guys for all the smoke you are blowing up there?
Jon |
I think everyone is being a little hard on Mr. Mills. Just because he doesn't have APBA, SBI, or UIM doesn't mean he can't have a race. He has water, fans and Sloppy Joe's -- why can't he have a race?
By the way, I am having the Superbowl here in my backyard a week from Sunday. If any teams want to sign up to play, just PM me. |
I don't know what permits are required in KW but this was posted on Hyroracer.net, some permits were requested and turned down but permits were filed for and Lee Mill's isn't mentioned in the denial letter.http://www.hydroracer.net/forums/sho...&threadid=1227

Mr. Mills Please STOP !!
This crazy hobby and sport is already seen as ludicrous by most people, and for good reason ( thank God they don't know how much we really spend  ). Please don't embarrass us any more by luring the unsuspecting casual fan to what they think ( and used to be) the best of the best in OffShore. What little respect the general public has for our passion will be destroyed when you rip them off with this SCAM.
As a person who has been involved with the sport for over 25 years I see this misleading debacle doing irreparable damage to the tradition of boat racing in Key West in the future. Please fold your tent and start working on next year today. BTW I have spent between $ 2500 and $ 15,000 per year in Key West during race week for nineteen years. Please don't tarnish the memories by turning the KEY WEST WORLDS into a bad joke. Sincerely, Jim Deitz |
Grin: Read that letter, who writes it, who it is addressed to, what it is in reference to. Then find the draft permit attached to same letter. That would answer all of your questions. You need to go to spin school.

AMEN GORDO

Sam Griffith, Forest Johnson, Jim Breuil, Red Crise and the other founders and supporters of modern offshore racing must be looking down (or up) at these *******s with a tear in their collective eyes. It ain't working, guys.

Same Old Story
SBI ABPA OPA AND NOW LM OFFSHORE |
I don't race but 6 of us were planning to come to Key West. We canceled our reservations. This is a complete lack of respect for other human beings in general. I'm pissed at Lee Mills and the APBA. Neither party has an excuse why they couldn't have informed the public before now. If they couldn't come to an agreement, why didn't the APBA just let someone else put it on or at least notify the city of KW of the situation?
I have lost a lot of respect for everyone involved in this nonsense. It is obvious to me that you don't care anyway... Thanks to both parties for screwing things up for a lot of innocent people with your arrogant BS. Dean Peters |
Please refer back to my post # 25 in this thread. Several sources "in the loop" have confirmed that "I hit the nail on the head". How many of you are contractors, agree to a price with a customer, then the customer at the last minute tries any manner possible to get you to lower your price? What would your reaction be? Probably same as mine, and as "others". In my opinion, and we all know what opinions are worth, Mr. Mills is responsible for this complete mess. He tried pulling some sh*t, and got told to shove it.
And as I understand, "VERY plain and VERY clear". All we can do is try our best to stay the course and have reason to hope that next year will be, to quote Aerosmith, "Back in the Saddle Again". Outlaw |
Way to go, Lee! You royally Fvcked-up what was supposed to be the best week of the year for a great many people!
My reservations are cancelled. |
"We have been seeking over the last two months, in good faith, to negotiate a fair and reasonable sanction agreement with the management of APBA Offshore"
