Unhappy Cracked GIL Exhaust manifolds

I'm having Millennyum Marine rebuild my Merc 454/420's. The Gil exhaust that Merc had installed has hairline cracks just below the riser.
I called Merc & they suggested welding. After 2 welding shops, no luck. It won't hold!
I called Merc back and they said there's nothing they can do, but sell me new ones for $1,200 each!

Has any else had to deal with this, and any suggestions?

Give me a call at Stainless Marine. 305-681-7893 x-16. We can beat the hell out of that deal.

Welcome to the club! I had some Merc/Gil manifolds go bad and didn't want to switch because I had new tailpipes. Merc wanted $2500 for the set and I called Gil directly and got the same manifolds that didn't say "Mercruiser" on the side for $1150

Hey Brownie,

I was supposed to get the stainless marine exhaust on my boat. 1997 Sonic with 500 carb engines. I ended up with another exhaust that I am pleased with. I was just wondering did you guys every find out why I could not get the exhaust for my boat. The boat was at Port Jackson in Jacksonville. Was it a salesman issue or a exhaust issue.

Thanks,

David Ledford

My friend just discovered cracks in his GILS in the same place as yours.

I just got off the phone with 'Dennis' at GIL/CORSICA. He asked me to ship them to him in Cleveland (at my expense) so his technicians can look at them. If the failure is due to casting problems, they will replace them!

How did you notice they were cracked ? signs of water in motor, or did you just notice the crack when you disassembled???
