Our deer sesaon opens up on Friday here in IL. we can't use the high power rifles, limited to shot guns, black powder and pistols. Can hardly wait.

go every year,
Good luck to everyone.

GLH 11-19-2003 03:31 PM

Our season opened on Monday morning, about 50% of the workers on my jobsite were MIA...

Those hunters are hardcore.

Wardey 11-19-2003 03:33 PM

27 - We usually go up to Bath County / VA but not enough time so we are hunting in Mercer County / WV and Tazewell County / VA. Dave

dave

what kind of deer there?

THRILLSEEKER 11-19-2003 03:36 PM

Its a shotgun only season here in OH. I usually dont even bother during gun season, (too many idiots in one place at the same time) Bow season is a lot nicer as far as weather goes plus IMO, the deer have a lot lighter (nicer) colored coat on them in early fall. It makes for a better looking mount.

Wardey, I went opening day here in Florida. I belong to a hunt club up near the Suwannee River. The only reason I got the time to go at all was we are doing a job in Alachua, about 50 miles away. I got up there, got in the woods and got out my rifle and............damn, left my ammo at home. Try finding ammo for a .358 Winchester in Dixie County Fla (pop ~11,000).:( I did have my 44 mag pistol AND ammo, so I walked a couple of swamps hoping to jump a hog, but nothing doing. It was too damn hot anyway (84 degrees). I didn't even bother to hunt the next day, I got up an headed home. Got there just in time to watch my Bucs lose another game.:(

Since I don't have much time for scouting this year, I think I'm going to focus on ducks and quail. Do you duck hunt?

Wardey 11-19-2003 10:31 PM

Hey Cuda, No ammo !!! That's too funny. I have never duck hunted. Only deer, rabbit, quail, pheasant, grouse and yes, one time, squirl. What a fun time that was...... Dave

Debbie's dad lives there and is a big time outdoorsman. He said they had a great archery and black powder season at our club.

He manages 1100 acres of the most beautiful land on the Suwannee for a guy that lives in Tallahassee. They only use it to quail hunt on, the deer population is unreal there. I may be able to set up a quail hunt later this year if you are interested. They have 10 good bird dogs on the property.

Wardey 11-19-2003 11:10 PM

Cuda - Keep me informed. Quail is a fun game bird to hunt and I would love to get the 12 guage out. Dave

I usually go out every free weekend I have, our archery season starts October 1st and between archery, gun, black powder and archery again we can hunt until January 1st. I shot a doe in early archery season (you can't eat the horns:) ) now were heading to northern Michigan this Friday for rifle season, hopefully there's some deer left...opening day was last weekend on the 15th.

No Deer this year. Saw 4 or 5 Doe's and 1 Button Buck. All the nuts and food was in the low country. We hunted at the top of the mountains in 16 degree weather. But still had a great time !!! This is what it's all about......Dave

cuda 12-05-2003 08:31 PM

Is that a model 94 or a Marlin your son has??

I agree, the fun is in the hunt, not in the kill. Hell, that's when it becomes work!:(

Wardey 12-05-2003 09:22 PM

Cuda - It's a 94 I bought years ago and gave to him this trip. Let me tell ya, I didn't hunt a stand but just laid down in some downed trees and that little button buck walked about 5 feet from me. I could have thrown my rifle at him. That to me is a hunt. I have killed deer but anymore, just love to get out with them. I would have liked to see Little D get one tho. After the first day, I dumped a bucket of apples out where I saw the button buck, thinking something bigger would come. But not one apple was touched. The deer were down low. Still, had a great time always. Dave

cuda 12-05-2003 10:22 PM

I've got two Mdl 94's myself. One in 44 mag and one in 45 long colt. I like them because they are easy to carry. I also have a couple of lever action Marlins. The gun Debbie likes to hunt with is a Marlin chambered in 35 Rem, but she has always done best with a black powder. Next time we see you, be sure to have her tell you the story about the big hog she got in the Lower Suwannee, it's unbelievable, but true.

I haven't taken my climber out in probably 4 years. I've got to where I can't stand to sit for hours on end. I'd rather walk and not shoot anything.
