Look like HP 500s with add on blowers:crazy:

Not 525's.
The blowers on 525's are HP Blue also. You got yourself a classic used boat hopup mystery. |

Here is a stock Mercury 525SC. This one was in my 28 Pantera. It was reliable, had good power, idled well and had that cool blower whistle/whine sound at speed.

mcollinstn: I think that you are thinking about the 575SCi. It is all blue. The engines look very similar, but have two main differences other than the color. The 525SC used the 454 block and was carbureted while the 575SCi uses the 502 block and is fuel injected. Here is a picture of the 575SCi.

Why can't they be HP 500's with black blowers added.

Duck, I'm not confusing the motors, but I AM basing my comment on only a single pair of 525's. Apparently the pair I am familiar with are not representative of how most of them came from Merc.
Friend had a '93 Formula 336 with 525's. Blowers were definitely blue. That boat, though, had been in Orange Beach for a season before I ever saw it here in TN. He had dropped a valve in one of them and had done a bit of work to it while in Orange Beach as well. I never asked, but assumed the blowers were blue from the factory. I also assumed all 525's were the same as his. I just saw him yesterday and will see him again on or around the 10th. I'll make a note to ask him about the blue blowers. He currently has 575SCi's and the blowers are most certainly blue, and were blue from the factory. (and they are a lot bigger blower, too). |
Slingshot,
Maybe they are 525s and he means 500hp at the prop???? Just an idea. If I had to guess they are 500s with blowers added. WILL |
interesting....
That isn't so far from me if you need it checked out. If i cna snake a free boat ride out of it i'd gladly grab my goretex jacket :D |
FYI....ALL Mercury Racing 525 SC's left the factory with black superchargers.
Regarding the picture of the engines in the boat ad, they are not a pic of any Mercury Racing engine package. ALL 525's and Carburated HP 500's left the factory with Gil Exhaust, the pics clearly show CMI Elbow Tops. The only engines to leave Merc with those headers are 600 SC's which those engines ARE NOT and of course the new 575 SCI's which again, they ARE NOT. Those engines could be anything. My guess is that they started life as HP 500's as indicated by the flame arrestors and some other identifiable items and had actual HP 525 Superchargers as indicated by the casting of the superchargers added along with CMI elbow tops. However, the 525's used Dominator carbs and the 500's used 800's, so the flame arrestors could be aftermarket with 500 decals or the superchargers have 4150 series carb adapters or ? The fuel lines are not std. Mercury Racing. There you go, clear as mud. The only thing for sure is that they are definately not STOCK Mercury Racing 525 SC's. Rod |
Late production 525 SC's (490 PS HP) were available/came with with CMI elbow tops. Yes, all the blowers were black Wiend 177's with Merc badge on the side of the case. They were strong and dependable, with a long service life (generally speaking for a blown motor). Smaller top pulley and a chiller get you about 550 HP, that's about it for that package tho for bolt on's.
