Well.... Boot = 0, Excursion Transmission = 1
You guys are gonna find out soon enough.
The tranny bit the dust on the Excursion. I think its a load of crap. There is no way that should have happened. That powertrain should have been rock solid. I just happened to be coming down Rt. 1, in Woodbridge, VA; and saw the boat parked lonesome in a shopping center. There was no way it wasn't him. Boot (Joe) and Sandy were around the corner at the Ford dealer. The mechanic helped move the boat to a safe location, and we got Boot and Ms. Boot settled into a hotel. The owner of the Excursion/Sonic (Boot's buddy in NJ) is looking for an experienced hauler to take the Sonic the rest of the way to Hollywood, FL. If anyone is available, stick a post up here, and I will put you in touch with Boot. He's probably leaving the area tomorrow, so I can help out with boat logistics. No, I am not taking it down with my AV. :D Damn thing just got over its own transmission hiccups. |
That sucks!!!!!!!!!
|
No way that blows
|
damn taht really sucks
|
Damnit.............:(
|
but this just goes to show you the power of OSO Again.. what are the chances of someone driving by and KNOWING someone?
|
Chris, I gotta tell ya, I NEVER take that road. Just happened to be in the area, and was avoiding afternoon traffic with a different route. Small fricking world and a big OSO community. Next week I expect to run into Timucin changing a tire on I-95. :D
I wish I could have met Boot and Sandy under better circumstances. :( |
Have Boot Call Biggus on the board. Not sure if he can do it but he does make that trip regularly. Only problem is the boat is already half way there already. Brian call me tomarrow and I will give you Kurts number. My phone number is (978) 985-0639

As an owner of an X I am bummed but that is a huge haul and a push for any truck short of a Semi. A bigger cooler was a must and speeds of 65 should be the max. I plan on a 33-35ft boat in the spring and I am adding a cooler, air bags, and X code springs to the front (350 springs with the plow package) and 350 block to the back. This and slow starts (this is where the TC slips the most and burns up) that alone will save a ton. Oh well, now it is time for a built TCI that can handle 1000hp.:D All trucks that work blow a tranny, just never put a stock unit back in and it should never happen again. I towed 10,000lbs with a 1/2 ton and blew the tranny at 115,000. After that I put in a bullet proof tranny and it is still strong at 200,000 (I see the Dodge on the road all the time).
|
Sorry to hear the bad news, I was wondering if the "X" would really be able to handle that big load.
I wish I could help but we are getting hit with a snow storm and my plate is full at the moment. Boot, hope all turns out well. Kurt |

He just got me up from Jupiter to NJ last week w/a big rig diesel semi PeterBuilt and did a great job. I was going 'opposite traffic' for this time of year, so he worked a good deal for me and should be heading back to FL or can def. let you know when he is. Handling that boat should not be a prob. Good luck Boot. Let me know how/if it works out ... L8R chris |
Do you guys know how hard it is to find a place to store a 45' boat for a few days on a Saturday with 4 inches of snow on the ground?????? If we could get it here easily, I just may stick it in the front yard. Wonder what the neighbors will think?
Biggus, if things cool off for a week... are you available? |
That really bites! Transmissions have always been the weak link for the Big 3 auto makers until you get into the industrial trucks. Wonder how a new X would have done with the 6 liter and the new trans?
There is a tranny builder (BTS?) that is discussed quite often on dieselstop.com - performing bulletproof rebuilds and torque converters for the Fords, even for those guys running at the track with propane. I know it's just a matter of time with mine, and that's where I'm going to put my money. Hop you get it worked out Joe! |
Jafo, it is a 6L and new(er) trans, that has pulled this boat plenty. Truck has about 30K miles on it.
When I spoke candidly with the Warranty Adminstrator at the Ford dealer, about the 6L/Powertrain and such, she just silently bowed and shook her head. She said it has been nothing but nightmares for them, and wishes they stuck with the 7.3L. |
I have a guy going by there next week heading to FL empty. (has a Ford F-350 Dually)
Call me at my shop - 732-477-6157. Cell 732-674-2946 Dave |
Is the boat named "Phantom"? If so, I saw him going across the Wilson Bridge at about 2:30 PM yesterday. I saw the boat and said to myself that must be Boot.
Sorry to here this, I wish I could help. Dave M. |
I used to tow my 40 Scarab, about 14000 w/trailer, with a Chevy 2500 6.0 gas pickup. Can you say way overloaded? I broke 2 transmissions in 2 years. When my lease was up I got a Duramax dually. Now I pull the Black Thunder at 70 on the freeway with the cruise and air and stereo on. No worries.
Nice to see so many people stepping up. A lot of helpful people around here.:) |

I've heard that as well, and even though they seem to have the bulk of the problems worked out now for model year 2004, I'm REALLY glad mine is a Y2K 7.3. I haven't had a single problem with engine/drivetrain so far in 50K miles. Not that I could afford a new one anyway..  Mine is just getting broken in, and it only pulls a 28' AT. I think  I'll be OK. |

I'll ask her if we can keep it there (fenced-in lot w/ security);) The only problem is how can we get that beast to the lot. I really don't feel like blowing my trannie up today!!  The lot is at Rt. 1 and Telegraph Rd. Craig 202-224-5499 |
Thank you everyone. I am just gonna let Boot and Sandy get back home to NJ today in the rental, and let him read and work on this when he gets in. Nothing happening here in DC right now with all this snow anyhow.
|
That sucks. "Built FORD tough", huh?
I have two words for you: Duramax, Allison. :D :D |
The transmissions in the Dodges don't seem to be any better. I've got a HD 2500 Quad Cab 4x4, V-10, 4:10 axle ratio, HD everything they offer, and started having tranny problems at 51,000, turns out it's a problem they've had since 94, and purposely don't fix cause it's a cash cow for them. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER FRIGGIN DODGE. When I can, those two words, Duramax/Allison. No other choice in my mind.
|
Boot sorry i couldnt help you guys out.
|

BOOT SORRY TO HEAR OF YOU PROBLEMS WISH I COULD HELP . my truck 2003 dodge cummings ho 6 speed 4x4
|
Boot, did you guys make it back in one piece with that rental?
|
Hey Brian, glad you ran into Boot! Nothing like finding a "friend" in the area when you're that far from home. I spent all day finishin up the winterization on my boat inside the heated shop!:D
Any guesses as to how much that rig weighs? If it was a fifth wheel trailer, I may consider hauling it myself with my 97 F350 PSD dually. Right now, all I got is a cheesy class III hitch. Would a class V hold that thing? Does it have electric brakes on all 6 or surge? Hey Boot, I still will call you in the AM tomarrow with potential hauling arrangements or if you need a little more time for storage. Steve |
Boot, sorry to hear about your troubles. Brian, let me know if there is anything I can do to help.
What has happened to transmissions? Does anyone remember the TH400? C6? A small aftermarket cooler and you could tow the space shuttle without any worries. Sure, they are not as efficient as automatics of today. It seems manufactures have lost sight of heavy duty quality in the quest for .5 more mpg using smaller lighter rotating parts which cannot take the heat. |
Anyone heard from Boot???

Why on earth they would even think of putting it behind a diesel is beyond me. |

Well sort of. It was renamed the 4L80E. The T400 was upgraded with a 4th gear and electronic controls. It still retained the awsome strength and durability of the old T400. I know that GM was putting this transmission in all the heavy duty (2500-3500) trucks gas or diesel. I'm not sure if they are still using for the non-Allision automatics in the new trucks. |

I signed on this morning specifically to see how boot was making out.
Sorry to see this. |
I THOUHT THEY WERE PULLING IT WITH THE TRUCK, BUT ANYWAY, I AM GLAD THAT THEY ARE SAFE AND IT DIDNT HAPPEN ON THE HIGHWAY SOMEWHERE.
THE 6.0 AND NEW TRANS. IS NO MATCH FOR THE 7.3 ,IT IS A TRIED AND PROVEN PLATFORM. FORM HAS RECALLED THE 6.0 AND BOUGHT BACK OVER 500 TRUCKS FROM PEOPLE THAT HAVE HAD PROBLEMS. I AM GLAD MINE IS OK AND NO PROBLEMS. 2000 / 7.3 / 4X4 / 29K |

I hear ya...towed a boat to Roanoke Va. , top it off last 10 miles of the trip it was snowing!!!! (not much of a load.....1999 25 ft Baja Outlaw/ 2000 2500 4wd 454/auto 3:73);) |
Yeah, Boot was only in VA for about 10 miles. That tranny got hosed. He said at one point he put it in a FWD gear and the damn thing backed up!
The boat is secured at a Marina in Woodbridge for a little while. |
tell him to call dave p.he has a empty truck going down.
|

Lets face it ALL the Truck manufacturers are not making traniesu up to par with the power the engines are putting down. I could hold on to the back of most of them and FART and pull them backwards...... of course after eating a 7-11 chilli cheeze dog :D:D
