Is OSO starting to spam its members ????

This morning I received this email from OSO -

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Happy Holidays to all OSO members. If you are considering buying a Holiday gift for your boat you might want to check out http://www.marinesecurities.com

Marine Securities offers the ultimate protection for all motors and drives (outboard to SSM#6) and best of all just mention that you are an OSO member and you will receive special pricing that is discounted off of the retail you would pay in stores.

Please check your insurance policies as it has been brought to our attention that some policies have clauses (fine print) that require locking devices in order for them to be covered in the event of theft.

OSO does not receieve any compensation for products sold.

I really enjoy OSO, but this is the first email of this type I have ever received from OSO. Unsolicited emails come at me from all sides. I would rather go onto the OSO site and see what it has to offer rather than receive more spam. Is this new or have they done this in the past??

SS930 12-08-2003 11:57 AM

Dido. :(

Cord 12-08-2003 12:01 PM

I had the same initial thought.

kitten 12-08-2003 12:06 PM

SPAM is something you receive from those whom you do not know. We know OSO! ;)

glassdave 12-08-2003 12:08 PM

i dont actually mind if i get adds like that. aleast it is somthing i might actually be interested in and might be able to use. its not like were get'n the "mericle offshoreonly penis enlargment pills" :D :D

ChrisK 12-08-2003 12:18 PM

that and how many emails HAVE you recieved from them in the past? I dont think one out of 1000000 I get a day is any big deal. BTW, I dunno if I got one or not, I have not been home to check my email.

McGary911 12-08-2003 12:23 PM

I got that one too. Guess we all did. I dont mind that much, as long as it doesnt happen that often, and is a product that theres a good chance ill have an interest in. Guess the best solution is to have an opt out checkbox on yhour profile page. That way WE can choose whether to get similar emails in the future.....

CustomRigger101 12-08-2003 12:28 PM

you got a free can of spam and i didn't.. i love spam... LOL

once a quater to keep the board running.. i can handle it.. :D

rainmn 12-08-2003 12:31 PM

I don't care if OSO sends them. Like it's already been said - it's from someone I know, and there is a chance I might actually be interested in the content of the message.
Now if I could only get rid of the penis enlargement e-mails, I'd be set. Are those a hint? :D

I got it too and have no problem with it, just don't be giving out or selling my email address.

Ron P 12-08-2003 12:53 PM

OSO sends out like one email per year and your getting upset? The only reason your complaining is because you know where it came from. I wouldn't call that spam.

Geez, this is a tough crowd.

105mph_38_2003 12-08-2003 12:56 PM

I got it but dont mind because its something that I need and never gave much thought to....So its a good thing for me they sent it out:)

I dont mind emails from OSO being that I use the site so much and I'm sure I will only be getting useful emails from them.

Only asking a question here, if you want to see upset go to the uncensored thread.

Cord 12-08-2003 01:40 PM

The only thing the erked me is that I almost blocked it with the spam filter.

kitten 12-08-2003 02:45 PM

Have you enabled it?

FYI Folks .... you can easily turn off (if you want) the option of receiving email from the administration by going into ---> 'member control panel' ---> 'edit options' ---> 'allow Bulletin Board Administrators and Moderators To Send You Email Notices' ---> change it to 'NO'

It's not really SPAM if you ask for it ... :)

Done

Thanks for the info

Cord 12-08-2003 03:52 PM

But...does that kill e-mails for private messages, subscribed threads etc?

CAP071 12-08-2003 04:06 PM

My God what a Bunch of Cry babies. What a cheap excuse for a post

CBlakeNS 12-08-2003 04:10 PM

I got that same email, but it was the first one, since I just registered, but it didnt bother me as long as its not a bunch of non sense stuff just to fill up the mail box...

IT wasnt that big of a deal to press delete..

Steve is just trying to help you guys out, right Steve? It wasn't a big deal to read it and delete it. Just my .02

OffshoreOnly 12-08-2003 04:23 PM

njgr8ful

you are exactly correct. we will not be doing this on a regular basis but remember we only do this if we think something is worthy. I would like to know that my drive would not be covered if it does not have a lock as I personally do not read the insurance policy that closely.

Remeber if you opt not to receive e-mails from admins and we need to alert you of something than you are SOL.

For example, one time there was a person that wanted to buy something fom another person. they remembered their screen name so we were able to e-mail through the admin panel and link the two people together. If you have a post that gets deleted or we need to send you a warning you might not get it.

WE WILL NEVER SELL YOUR MEMBER INFO TO ANYONE. IF YOU POST YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS IN PUBLIC (in a post) PEOPLE CAN SWEEP THE SIGHT WITH CERTAIN SOFTWARES AND CAPTURE IT!!

OSO

Cord,
All of those 'generated emails' can be disabled thru the Member Control Panel as well under the messaging and notifications section. You can set up to have no emails sent on receipt of private messages, subscribed threads, ... or moderator/admin type notifications.

Nope. Not what I'm looking for. I just view the email about somebody trying to find somebody different from the one trying to sell drive locks. That's all. No crying. No wining. No *****in.

CAP071 12-08-2003 05:03 PM

damn Sissy!:D

David 12-08-2003 05:37 PM

I have been a registered member for over 3 years, and on here before that, too, and I can count the emails I have gotten from OSO on one hand, not including PM notices. Kwitcher*****in!

ChrisK 12-08-2003 05:44 PM

OK I am home now.. and no email.. so I do believe i set up my account to NOT recieve them..

Thats what I was thinking!

It was actually pretty painless to go to the top of the screen and manually hit the delete button. :o

Its not just members. I visited the site (didnt even log on) from a friends puter amd he got it too.

OffshoreOnly 12-09-2003 12:00 AM

Formula31 that would be a neat trick, how did he get it, via e-mail? If he never registered and we were able to e-mail him I would be sitting on a 300 foot yacht drinking mai-tais right now watching my servants fan me. And of course I would accept calls from my clients Amazon, Microsoft, Dell, Intel, Coca Cola, and everyone else that would want to buy my secret.:D

PhantomChaos 12-09-2003 12:23 AM

105mph_38_2003 12-09-2003 12:34 AM

I am directed to www.perfectnav.com when I click on a thread..what causes this? i ran ad aware and removed the little software I found but it still does it.

packinair 12-09-2003 12:42 AM

YUP!!! AOL HAS IT'S PRIVLIGES:D I had another e-mail that I used 1 time and 1 time only to register for "the other site"I'll bet that name gets 50-75 spams a week.. only used it to register... HMMMM WHERE ARE THEY COMING FROM??? my thought is that if steve wants to send me notes, updates, specials that is great.. if I want to read it I will, if I don't I will delete it

H2Xmark 12-09-2003 06:15 AM

guess that'a what's going on with my mail, I have AOL also, so I guess I'm on your list Fred!!!!!!!

formula31 12-09-2003 07:03 AM

I dont know how it happens either. I was on his puter and checked a couple threads on the site, thats all. I dont even think I logged in on his puter. I assume there is a cookie there that I should have removed. Is that how he got the email, from the cookie?
