O.L speed record

I,ve been reading all these threads about O.Ls
new speed record. O. L guys dissing Fountain.
Fountain guys defending Fountain. Hey,they
are both great boats in their class. O.L guys:
are you saying because O.L holds the new record,
it is best boat built? Face it,the record is all about
who can stuff the biggest power in thier boat.
As soon as someone figures out how to stuff a
turbine in a V-hull,that will be the new fastest
boat. Does that mean it's better than every other
boat out there? I own a Fountain,but I wish I had
an O.L, not because it holds the speed record. But
just because I like The design, Quality and because
they just look F@ckin Awesome. But I don't have the
bucks, so Fountains the next best thing! :)

ssm-v1 12-11-2003 05:49 PM

O.L. owners wouldn't gloat as much if Reggie wasn't so pissed off at the award ceremony saying that this will never happen again. If he was a good sport about it the gloating wouldn't be so bad.Just look at the pics in P.R.A mag. giving the award to Bob Russel

dreamboater 12-11-2003 05:50 PM

Callan Marine already put a turbine in a Vhull. I dont remember how fast and how big the boat was. I know it ran last year at loto, but not enough room for it to really get up to full speed. The speed record will be challenged but the OL boys still have to play with their epoxy hulls.

LapseofReason 12-11-2003 06:07 PM

There is a lot more to it than putting big power in to get it to go fast. There is a few turbine powered V's out there and they are not as fast. People have put big power in Fountains and gone the same speed or very little more with 2.3.4 hundred more ponys. It seems 120mph is a big hill to get over and pick up mph like you did per dollar from 100mph. And it's not just that OL is that fast, it is that it was just another one of there boats and it's not a full on race boat like the Fountain was.

After that big fast OL kicks the chit out of you in a race he can go down in the cabin take a chit and flush in his enclosed head and maybe take a shower to clean up while he is down there. Thats what make's the OL record cool, to me anyway. If big power was the trick I would put some in my 42 Sonic but I bet 2800 hp will only get me 115 mph and un safe handling.

Downtown42 12-11-2003 06:08 PM

epeek, I agree some. My question is any 42 beaks out there with equal power 1450's I think OL has. 42 with full cabin will do 129 and mild 1100 snake power.
Wonder what 1450's what put her at??

LapseofReason 12-11-2003 06:10 PM

I don't think Bobs boat has a cabin but most of you get the point I am making.

THEJOKER 12-11-2003 06:13 PM

Reggie will definitely step up and spend every dime he can get his hands on to get up to speed. OL builds every pleasure boat like it's a race boat, you can't argue with that! Comparing an OL to a Fountain is like comparing a Corvette to a Mustang - BH

LapseofReason 12-11-2003 06:13 PM

42 full cabin, gen, ac, 1200's 128-130 epoxy hull. The older ones are 8-10 slower same set up.

Downtown42 12-11-2003 06:19 PM

OL has a following because they are a custom boat with awesome paint. One thing I don't care for with Fountain is they are a production boat and they all look the same. If they limited production and stepped up to the plate with paint, there would be more of a cultural following.

Ron P 12-11-2003 06:53 PM

I just can't stand the throttles on the left side.

LapseofReason 12-11-2003 06:55 PM

Yea it's like jerking off with your left hand. Reggie is left handed.

Downtown42 12-11-2003 08:10 PM

Maybe that caused him to grow big ears

Do you really think Reggie had the puss on thru
the whole ceremony or was that just a lucky shot
by some photographer.

Yea, I agree about all Fountains looking alike, but
so do Formulas,Scarabs and Bajas. If they put
$80k paint jobs on them, guys like me could
never buy them. Thats the difference between
custom & production. I still think Fountains are
one of the best looking boats around, for a
production boat. Apparently alot of other people
think so to. And judging by the used market they
seem to hold their value as good as any Cig, At,
Pantera or others based on what they cost new.

LapseofReason 12-11-2003 09:08 PM

I didnt think his had a cabin but you can get a small half cabin with some. I'm sure you could get a full cabin in one but why would you bother that with the GTX. I perfer a full cabin I can almost stand in and take the speed hit, if I only wanted speed I would buy a cat.

BattleCry 12-12-2003 03:46 AM

There was another V-Hull with turbines as well. Its was a Black Thunder called Turbinator. It was in Key West in '99 on the FPC run.

WickedWon 12-12-2003 06:50 AM

It Takes More Than Just HP

If you don't think Reggie hasn't already had over 3000hp in a step bottom race boat you're mistaken. Ask Art Lilly ;)

outer42 12-12-2003 08:03 AM

wicked won you know the truth, its not putting big hp in a boat its handling too. i run my boat at 125 and its like cruising at 60.
epeek its not about bragging its about reggie attitude towards people. i raced a whole season with sbi and saw him at every race and he walk right past me,if i was running a foutain he talk to me.
mike is about talking to everybody and helping like in sarasota his crew helped fix the poker run america boat with reggie throttling, thata what its about. somedays you get the bear and some days the bear gets you.
its all good, jus have fun and run hard.

When I run my Crownline at 55, it feels like 105!!!
Get more thrill for the dollar that way:D :D

personally I like to see Reggie get beat! Keeps things interesting.... I'm waiting for the boys in Douglas Michigan to get the V hull thing figured out then watch out!!

outer42 12-12-2003 08:28 AM

lonestar,
i was trying to say 125 is rock solid in my boat, you run some boats with big hp and there unsafe and can hurt somebody. it was a point you jus can't put big hp in any boat and get it to perform and be safe.

TEAMBAJA 12-12-2003 08:32 AM

What is the ceremony with Reggie Fountain that you guys are talking about? Did he have to hand over the title or something?

animalhouse 12-12-2003 09:01 AM

TEAMBAJA,

The ceremony was the APRA Trophy for Top Gun, Worlds Fastest V-Hull. Bob Russell's Outerlimits ran 149.7 with a broken sea strainer, and water up to the blower belts in the bildge. They popped the strainer lid off at 150+ and kept on rolling.

Any Way, the event was held at Fountain's facility, I don't imagine Reggie enjoyed a spanking in his own house. I will attach the photo in question for your reference.

I couldn't agree with you more, I just wish I was in your shoes. I along with the majority druel over the OL's, and I think what Mike is doing is fantastic. I can't wait to see what kind of firepower comes out of the moldwork this year!!

If you're interested, I'll give you a ride in my crownline in return for a ride in your OL!! :D :D

no problem if you're around a poker run and sea jus truckin intro yourself.if i have room.

waterspeed 12-12-2003 12:38 PM

Well, from a racing perspective, I used to own and race the OL 37 WILD CHILD F2-07. Whenever we beat Reggie..(basically every rough water race), he would be in my face about buying one of his boats...I'd simply respond.."Why, so another OL can beat me in the rough stuff". Even worse was when he beat us in his 105mph 35' footer, or if we broke, then he would talk trash about the boat. His ego interferes with his abilty to build his business properly. We were the first one's in the pits to lend anyone a hand..no matter what boat the owned. Reggie's only hlped his own boys. Kinda takes the sportsmanship out of it. Mike and his company would drop anything to help another team, irregardless of their brand of boat.

Just my .02.

DoTheMath 12-12-2003 12:52 PM

Wow, that pic. of Reggie says it all... Looks like he wants to take his ball and go home 'cuz the rest of the boys in the sandbox didn't let him play the game his way.;)

epeek 12-12-2003 11:33 PM

OL guys, help me understand. Fountain ran aprox
144 mph for the speed record, O.L ran aprox 150
mph. So are you saying that as soon as the Fountain
goes over 144, the boat gets squirrelly. Only O.Ls
hulls can hit that number & stay in the water? I just
don;t get it. It seems to me, that a extra 4-5 hundred
pony's would put the Fountain in the ball park. As far
as the Fountain being a full race boat, whats the
difference between the Record holding O.L. Canopies?
What the hell does that have to do with speed? It only
keeps you from falling out! It seems more that you
guys just don't like Reggie. Hey, I don't know him. Maybe
he is an a$$hole, but I deal with a$$holes every day.
It doesn't mean they are not good at what they do.
Back4more, you own a 42 (sweet boat,love that Mitcher
T paint job) Do you think your 42 could handle huge power?

WickedWon 12-13-2003 06:38 AM

Uncharted Territory

Hell their all VERY SQUIRRLEY at those speeds, this is very serious sh#t !. Deep V's aren't suppose to go this fast, I personally haven't been in Mr. Russels boat but I have two friends who have at BIG speed. Their response( they are both involved in racing and have been over 150mph in big cats) was WOW and I ain't gettin back in.
This isn't a slam against the boat it's the reality of what we're casually talking about. I've have no problem with Reggie, I owned one of his race boats and he did things for me that I will always be grateful for. The point is, at these speeds what it takes to go faster is truly exponential, each mph increase is a MOUNTAIN to climb. There are "walls" that ya can't seem to break through.

In my opinion, the difference between 144 and 149 is more like the difference betwee 75 and 105 in a big boat, you don't get there by adding 500hp you have to more than double it. At this level it takes more than just HP, it takes a little magic dust, and Fiore has found some in his set up, weight and bottom, he should be commended.

That said, IT SCARES THE SH#T OUT OF ME WHEN HE RUNS ON THAT EDGE, SO STOP IT !! If something bad happens it will affect all of us who dig this silly stuff.

LapseofReason 12-13-2003 08:39 AM

I think the Fountain will drive the same at 150 it's just the getting it there. More power is not always the key, it may just start to get more prop slip and not go much faster. As far as the canoopies they are more aero dynamic, I feel that the Fountain has the best chance at getting the record back and not killing anyone. My point to big HP and speed is what if you take a 42 Tiger that runs nice around 100 mph what is it going to feel like at 150. I don't want to be the first guy to do it.

O-Limit37 12-13-2003 09:09 AM

My only triple digit experience on an OL (our boat only runs in the low 90's :o) was over the past summer. I got a ride on Russell's boat where the conditions were mild lake chop. He ran 120mph and other than the fact that we were zipping by things at light speed, the 42GTX (as Scott has mentioned) literally felt like it was only cruising at 60 mph. The boat was incredibly smooth, dialed, and rock solid.
When I stepped off the boat an acquaintance with a 42 Tiger approached me and asked me about the ride. He was flabbergasted and didn't believe me that the boat ran so smoothly at 100+ mph. He questioned me about the handling and wondered if the GTX was bouncing from rub rail to rub rail. I explained to him that I felt very safe and that the boat didn't flinch an inch side to side. I have no experience with Cigs., they are beautiful boats, but are they squirrely with BIG HP and 100+ speeds?

LapseofReason 12-13-2003 12:06 PM

I have a buddy that has a 25 Baja Outlaw with about 800 hp I got in that thing once he hit 88 on the gps and said he had 4 more to go. I have never been that scared in a boat before.

MarkC 12-13-2003 12:30 PM

Maybe I can help this topic a little. I am a Junior Nav Arch with Canada's largest shipbuilding company. It's not the horsepower, it's the hull and setup. Anyone can go to Sterling and buy 1480HP engines. The boat and setup makes the difference. Congrats to Mike and OL. He and the crew have found something that really works!

epeek 12-13-2003 06:49 PM

WickedWon, well said :) And when you slap me around
with a little reality about the speeds we are talking,
I have to agree with you. ( By the way, that is one
Sweet ride you've got). The only thing I don't like,
is the "mine is better than yours" crap on this board.Iknow a lot
of guys are pretty proud of their rides, and no
one should be downing anything that someone else
has. Weather they love or hate Fiore or Reggie, just
having any kind of performance boat makes all of us,
lucky "Sons a *B!tches".
