What new occupation would you consider?

Sitting here in a job that I really don't like anymore... Great pay, benefits, beautiful campus, just don't enjoy getting up to it everyday... and now I'm reporting to kids!!! I'm in my late 30's!!!

What realistic occupation or business would you consider starting over with???

If I'd stayed in the Coast Guard, I'd be retiring this year!!! Wow!!!

Anyone else dreaming out there???

rchevelle71 01-09-2004 01:32 PM

ofshore 01-09-2004 01:38 PM

I feel the same way, I'm designing automotive components and I'm pretty bored, but it's hard to leave a good job. I've been considering civil engineering, I have a good connection in the field, but i don't know if it will be any better just something different. What can you do work sucks

frequentflyer 01-09-2004 01:55 PM

Good one Craig.. Never looked at it that way...

I would love to open up a High Performance Marine Shop kinda like Doller Offshore. I am mechanically inclined and boating is my passion. It's something I always wanted to do..

I guess this is true, but my buddy is a TV Weatherman (News 12 NY) and I wouldn't want his job. He gets up at 3:00 am, and has to look presentable enough to be on tv by 5 or 6.
No way could I do it. Not a morning person at all.

WHAT?????

nobody agrees with "Porn Stunt Double"??????

rchevelle71 01-09-2004 02:14 PM

NAH,

When your the double, nobody has to know, they dont even see your face, just go in and get the job done & get outta there!!!!

KH0302 01-09-2004 02:20 PM

The grass is always greener...I advise to relook how good you have it. I was always disgruntled when I worked at a nationwide wireless carrier, and since then I haven't had the same pay bennies or freedom I had there. If I could roll the clock back I would have done things WAY differently. :(

The only other things I'd like to do would be to work as a tech in a performance boat or bike shop, or playing my guitar. Number 2 is rather doubtful, unless I get an A for effort. :)

as a kid i always loved Corvettes and and turned that love for Corvettes into a business and proffession. I was working on all the old ones and loving it and slowly it became a job and as most jobs they become tiring and eventually i learned to hate Corvettes. 13yrs ago i sold my business and shortly after that sold a collection of corvettes that most would die for, and bought a offshore boat. Bottom line is work is exactly that work! Ive often thought about going into a marina and or boat repair facility but im afraid that i would then learn to hate boats and at this time in my life it is one of the few things in life i really enjoy.

Your in your job for 13 years, have college education. Now your working for a person that you helped hire about 5 years ago as a newbie.... How should one feel about this???

mr_velocity 01-09-2004 02:33 PM

Funny, I just sent out mail to a buddy telling him I need a new job. I'm starting a collections agency for my wife. She used to manage an agency in NYC, then had kids. The kids are in school now so it's time she start working again, this time for us.

That is not easy I'm sure. When I took over my families (50 year old) business, I had to play the diplomat and learn how to handle employees that had been there for A LOT longer then I had, it wasn't easy but I made the best of it and eventually it worked out. Now that I am out of that and working for a fairly large company, it is very different. My bosses boss was the same age as I am, SHE was so cool to work for and I learned a lot, (ok, she is hot too but that's beside the point);) . I think that if your "new boss" is good and can offer you value and treat you right, go with it... if not - get the F*#$ out!!

It's a big world and life is too short to be unhappy!! Do what you like and like what you do!

I like the weatherman gig idea!! You can always screw up and blame it on a shift in the wind! -hehe.

I love farming, but I think I would also love to come down he Florida and work as an airboat tour guide in the winter. Last week we went on a ride out in the boonies from Orlando. In fact, it was Boony Creek road or something like that. . Very cool place and a very cool ride. Driving it seemed sorta like a cross between a boat and a combine.:D :D

Wanna buy my Corvette? :D:D:D

We're near Corvette Central here and "involved" with the business in many levels myself and others in the family. They still love Vettes although it's a lot of work for them. I hear ya though, started a business that was a hobby and now it's a job and not as fun as it once was. Once you get away from the fun and start hiring people and dealing with that stuff, the fun gets pulled out of it. It's tough to stay excited sometimes. Other times, it's easy, though. We just "lost" two employees this week, as a matter of fact. Happy happy, joy joy.

You gotta admit, it probably would take longer to get sick of Corvettes than say, cofins or lag bolts or something.

I'd rather just hit the lotto also. I'd then own a marina or two just so I'd have a "free" slip. :D:D

East Coast:

Try going on "The Apprentice" LOL!

East Coast B 01-09-2004 04:49 PM

Thanks everyone!!! Guess I have to weigh the good over the bad and just swallow what little pride I had left and make the best of it. It's a big company and I can't beat the system!!!

I'm going to go out and start buying lotto tickets!!!

bermudaboy 01-09-2004 04:50 PM

I got sick of the electrical business and we bought a boatyard here. The learning curve has been steep and the last year has been VERY interesting. The new people and the challenges make this job the best decision that I could have made. I still go through days where I would trade the business for a cold six pack of Heiniken though.
Good luck, sometimes it's worth taking a chance.

Cheers,

Andy

I am at that point right now in my life as well. I work for a major wireless carrier, and after 2 years of trying to get into another position in the company I have pretty much be told I am not going anywhere. Or in "HR speak", my position has a glass ceiling in it.

I find it extremly sad that when companys are always saying they want and need employee loyalty. I believe I am one of those people, I like the company but feel that if I am to grow as a person, and a worker, I need to move to another company. It is really sad when you think of it.. It will cost the company more money to find, hire and train my replacement AS WELL as find someone to fill the positions I have been trying to get.. than if they just moved me up, trained me for the 4-8 weeks to do it, and find my replacement..

This is the main reason why I started building houses, or at least one and hopefully more. Heck even if I make what i make right now, I will leave just for the change of pace. After 5 years of doing the EXACT same thing.. its just old...

mopower 01-09-2004 05:50 PM

I'll have 37 years at my job in March and it gets to suck more each year ( a major long distance carrier). But give up the 6 weeks vacation , the money , the other bennies would be hard to do , to go work for Home Depot for $10 an hour:rolleyes:

CAP071 01-09-2004 05:59 PM

East Coast B ever in Philly ? Meet up 4 drinks. I wish I had even know about CG . My younger brother went in and got right out what a dope. When I seen him on base I was like whoa I wanna join. I have 10 years in Postal life now. Probably staying but I often dream about (what if's) Was suppose to follow family tree and become a Policeman but I walked away from the offer. most of my friends are cops now. one was even shot , saved by a vest here in Philly.
I guess we could all spend a life time wondering what if?

East Coast B 01-09-2004 06:16 PM

Boat yard in Bermuda.... it's 5 degrees out right now... Bermuda sounds gooooooooooooood!!!

Cap.... what if.... I had plate on my last car... "One Day" always wondering.... but as someone else said... it's hard to walk away from a good job.... I will say that it's got me thinking about doing a little saving and really thinking about alternatives....

Damm I hate this cold... boat yard in Bermuda.... ahhhhhhhhh..... if I ever get there, I'm looking up Bermudaboy!!!

Whatever you do guys.... Don't make a business out of your hobby..... You'll soon hate your hobby.... because it all becomes work after a while.... I don't think there is anything worse than trying to please a customer with something that is a hobby.... THE F**CKERS ARE NEVER HAPPY. I sometimes think being a garbage collector is the best job of all...... you just pick up the trash and everyone is happy to see you leave with your smelly truck! I know the trash collectors here in Los Angeles make Good money.... health bennies.... 14 paid days off...... and no one complains about the quality of their work! They never have customers nit-pick their work (all in an effort to pay less) , and with new equipment... they don't even have to get out of the truck.... they just toggle some levers and the cans dump themselves...

Steve 1 01-09-2004 08:44 PM

I really like what I do in fact sometimes feel like the luckiest guy on the planet looking foreword to going to work.. Hell been all over the world...

Comes really back to Miami and the excitement created by Mr Aronow that drew me into the business down here.

Never gave any real thought to anything else..

Maybe in a different life working for a firm that does Bridge design.

robyw1 01-09-2004 08:53 PM

I'd like to be a marina/storage owner. This way in the winter I do nothing all day but come to work and increase my OSO post count. :D:D

Seriously though I would love to explorer space but I was born too early for that.

I just went through the same thing myself over the last year. I started training for another career all together in Realestate and Home Mortgages in Sept. Left my job after 10 years Nov. 21st. I miss the money but I love my new job.

Good Luck on whatever you decide. I Know what you're going through. Start looking ahead if you truely hate you're job that much.
