Originally posted by d-hlaw I find it funny that alot of you guys dont like Howard.... He is a pioneer and non conformist, an attribute that many of us share by virtue of our passion for offshore boats. I guess that nobody will be concerned until Strip Poker is indicted for indecent materials posted in the uncensored section, and Steve and Jeff are named as co-conspirators and all of their boats are seized as well as every thing else they own. Think its far fetched?? Think about that the next time a picture of a nude girl gets posted and she looks young....... its not the age claimed its the actual age that counts (Traci Lords). We are heading down that path, in fact there are efforts to revisit the internet decency act.......... I am not trying to be a chicken little "sky is falling" kinda person but I see the way the system is changing and am concerned. Very, very good point! But, he's still an IDIOT!;) |
Oh, and as far as this country was built on Christian principals...
You could say that this country was built on Protestant/Christian principals, and we now have a Catholic (John Kerry) running for president. The truth is: this counrty was founded by God fearing men. However, the God of Abraham is the God of the Christian and the Jews and the Muslims. We all worship the same God. |
One final comment...
Troutly, please move this thread to the "Off Topic" section! :p |
d-hlaw, Thanks for stating the Federalist Papers! Sad thing, but their are a whole lot of Americans that have never heard of them before.
If you folks want to censor what comes into your houses please turn the F'n station don't pull the plug on the show. I listen to HS some mornings, I think he's a moron and that's why I like his show. It is after all, COMEDY!!! Is it causing you pain for ME to listen? If it is, well please go find a therapist. |

roby, you read the Federalist Papers in GRADE school?!?!? Little heavy for a seven year old isn't it? I don't know when or where you went to school but I never knew about them 'till much later. You better take a good long look outside..... they're definitely NOT teaching the proper way to wear a condom.
... and now? Back to Stern bashing. Carry on. |
Grade school where I come from is K thru 12. I was 16 when we studied them... I think :D

Originally posted by d-hlaw You are incorrect on this, see the seperation of powers clause, writings of the founding fathers, federalist papers, etc. Why would the founders battle the British and an oppressive religious based monarchy to establish one of their own?? The whole concept of our country is a mixing of social and idealogical differences. This thought that america is a "Christian" society and the Christian right forcing of their morals and values on everyone else is offensive. I do a lot of genealogy and read quite a bit about the oppressive national "Church of England" that Elizabeth 1 established in the 1600's. This "National" church alienated Catholics, Quakers, Baptists and Puritans, and these people all refused to participate in this required Anglican communion, which resulted in persecution against them. One main reason they came to America was to get away from a solitary forced religion. And one of the first items they worked on was separation of church and state, because this had caused so much hate and harm to so many generations. They demanded Freedom. Maryland was where the Catholics settled, named after the mother of Jesus. Pennsylvania was where the Quakers settled...named after Quaker leader, William Penn. In New England the great majority of the people were Congregationalists The Constitution: AMENDMENT I (1791) Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press... "...one nation, under God, indivisible..." The original version of the Pledge did not have "under God" in it. The U.S. Congress passed a law adding those two words in 1953. |
Great instant history lesson, DK. It is almost as if the refrain "Christian Principals" describes a way of leading ones life. We have the freedom to elect how to live our lives, due in large part to the foresight of our founding fathers. It was the clear intent of these men of reason to clearly and unequivocally separate matters of government from matters of religion. To suggest that our founding fathers were motivated by certain "principals" is accurate; however, they are not the principals you allude to Just Say N2O. I am not a Christian and I do not play one on TV. If you meant to infer that our founding fathers did not intend to prevent the regulation of off color comedy, pornography and the like, I firmly disagree with you. I doubt that these exact issues were in their minds when they wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, but taboo issues of their day were kept in mind and were dealt with accordingly. Instead of having to contemplate the actions of a radio personality broadcasting his message across the country, the founding fathers had to contemplate a person speaking their mind in the town square and being able to do so withour fear of retribution, imprisonment, or some other form of opression. Times have clearly changed but it always amazes me how a document created several hundred years ago still makes perfect sense today.

...and Strom Thurmond and Thomas Jefferson and Robert Tilton.......the list Governmental or Evangelical improprieties is huge.
There's always immorality - no sector of society is immune. Even Christian evangelists fall. But I think that a few TVshows/DJ's/ do go over the top with the vulgarity. Christianity is fine (of which I'm one), but I know Christian's are not the sole authority on teaching morality. Hindus, Jews, Buddhists, Athiests, Muslims and Christians would all be equally offended by some of the tasteless and crude humor that we are exposed to. Personally, I think if I cant shut it off in time before my kids see/hear it, or at least be given a warning about the content, then it needs to be toned down, at least in prime time. :) |

Woa there big fella' Are you trying to tell me old GW stepped in the Whitehouse doors and caused a faultering economy. I think you know better but you just don't like GW. If you are blaming him for the economic troubles then you are mistaken.
You usually sound quite intelligent but I think just maybe you've been joining 'ol GW in his favorite past-time. |
Hey BK I think I can help with this for you then.
HOWARD STERN IS CRUDE AND VULGAR!!! WARNING, YOU MAY NOT WANT YOUR KIDS LISTENING TO HIM. IF CRUDE AND TO SOME BOY-SCOUTS WHO LIVE IN LA LA LAND, OBNOXIOUS CONTENT, NO MATTER HOW FUNNY IT IS, OFFENDS YOU, YOU MAY NOT WANT TO LISTEN TO HIM. Now, thank GOD he's still on the air here. But then again, the clam bumpers and the missile in the mouth boys are getting married too. |
Actually, I quit listening to Stern and I've never heard of that other guy.
HOWEVER --- there is a comedy morning DJ trio on a station right here in my town that typically run a funny, but un-shocking show. I often listen to them while driving my kids to school. One morning they had a special guest who started making all sorts of sexual references that were WAY over the top. Now, I'm certainly not a prude. But these comments went way too far, IMO. There were kids in the car! I can hear them asking the teacher a few minutes later: "What does 'she did me like Hoover vacuum cleaner' mean?" What I'm thinking is....which DJ is going to start doing it next? Or maybe just keep my radio off. |
I'll exercise my right to take my money to the sponsors of another broadcasting company. While Clear Channel can do what it has to do for it's shareholders , I'll have to do what I have to do to satisfly my need for vulgar immature behavior .
No I'm not going to become a politician. but I did stay at a motel 6 last night. FREE SHCMOOPY !! |

I'm going to open up a whole new can of WORM'S. If Clear Channel is so concered about what they AIR what about all the HIP HOP tunes that Denegrate women and songs that premote the KILLING of POLICE. I think if anything should be removed from the airwaves these type of songs would be more of a PRIOITY. Here we go OH did I not mention that the MAJORITY of HIP HOP music are performed by MINORITY ARTIST.
Let the people clean their own house first before they try and clean up mine. |
Boys, just follow the money. CC has a huge amount of family oriented COUNTRY radio stations that are making it HUGE money. (In D.C. it is more expensive to get on a country station than any other format-and there is only one) Why should they bother with the possibility of fines, poor press, protests, etc. by carrying Howard?? They can switch to all talk or country and make a pot full of money with no hassles-it just makes good economic sense.
Personally I find Howard to be a freekin noodge and can't be bothered any more, but he can do what he wants and live with the consequences. I saw on the news tonight that the glitterati are all upset by ABC's decision to delay the Academy Awards- BY 5 SECONDS  I mean please, it's like them saying "I have the right to say F*ck to the whole country if I want to". Guess what-no they don't-get over it. |
Hip Hop Hooray, Hoooo Heyyyy Hooooo

What is happening with this country ? Freedom of speech is in the constitution and there is no amendment that says (but watch what you say). I'm not a lawyer or a politician but what the phuck is happening with our country ? I agree with D-hlaw and Stecz20. I listen to Howard when I am in the hell traffic I have to deal with every day to get to work. If you don't like him, tune out!!
What is the problem? Clearchannel makes ALOT of money from this guy and even though stock went up today, guess what is going to happen when advertisers pull out because of this situation? Like him or not, he appeals to males 18 - 35 and there are advertisers that target this audience... Alot of you guys that are against Howard have even posted in the unsensored section... How would you feel if that is taken away?.. Think about iit cause it's next... Also yesterday on Dateline, 20/20 or one of the poplular llike shows they had a documentary about people that were not in agreement with the gender they were born with. A father of two all of a sudden decided to become a woman... Politically, I am not with either party...BUT.. If we don't do something next thing you know, our country is going to be known as the country that marries homos, has a third gender, is in debt up to it's a$$ and violates it's constitution (freedom of speech) based on religious beliefs ? That's not what our ancestors died for is it? |
hey flier, i agree with you to a point. im for being yourself , if your in love with a man and that is what makes you happy, who am i to say its wrong.. thats my point.. enough of this stuff, lets think about the big race with rags and rollwithit......Mr. Wonderful

It looks like a lot of people are blaming the government for HS getting pulled. It was a BUSINESS making a BUSINESS DECISION, it isn't like some jack booted thugs yanked him.
MR WONDERFUL FOR PRESIDENT IN 04! :D |
This whole mess DID start with a hefty government fine...Without that, I would think both guys would still be on the air, this is a reactionary move from CC, not proactive.
This might be a good time for Infinity to step up to the plate and hit it big. After all, neither could be that bad when their followship is big enough for both to consistently score high in the ratings. |
Apparently, Congress has told Clear Channel that if they don't yank these kinds of shows, they could lose their license. Yesterday Congress discussed increasing fines 10 times higher than the current amount.
Some uneasy listening Lawmakers say broadcasters talk of fighting obscenity while their lawyers fight FCC fines BY JAMES TOEDTMAN CHIEF ECONOMIC CORRESPONDENT February 27, 2004 WASHINGTON - Howard Stern may be off the air in six cities and Bubba the Love Sponge fired altogether, but both were in the Capitol Hill spotlight yesterday as chastened broadcasters assured Congress that raunchy and indecent programs were rare and wouldn't be tolerated. "The Bubbas of the world and the Howard Sterns of the world are the exception," Clear Channel Radio president John Hogan said a day after he pulled Stern's shock jock radio show off all six of Clear Channel's stations that carried him. But the broadcasters' credibility was questioned when lawmakers tried to reconcile the public apologies with strident legal defenses against FCC investigators. "If you're saying one thing here, but your lawyers are saying something different, we don't know who to believe," Rep. Charles Pickering Jr. (R-Miss.) complained. Hogan led a panel of broadcasters from ABC, NBC and Fox summoned before the House telecommunications subcommittee after CBS' Super Bowl halftime show, in which Justin Timberlake exposed Janet Jackson's right breast. The incident prompted 250,000 public complaints and prompted Congress to consider raising the fine for obscene and indecent broadcasts from $27,500 to $275,000. Hogan's apology was echoed by Alan Wurtzel, who heads NBC's media development and standards and practices group. NBC is fending off a potential FCC complaint for broadcasting rock singer Bono's obscene reference when he received a Golden Globe award last year. "NBC deeply regrets the entertainer Bono's spontaneous and unfortunate choice of an unacceptable word," Wurtzel said. But Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.) asked if Hogan's apology meant Clear Channel would not challenge a proposed $755,000 FCC fine for a series of sexually explicit broadcasts by a Clear Channel morning talk show host, Todd Clem, aka "Bubba the Love Sponge." But Hogan said Clear Channel is keeping its legal options open. The deadline to pay the fine is Thursday, he said, and a decision hasn't been made. Hogan asserted he was being consistent. "The stakes are very high," he said of the $755,000 fine and possible revocation of FCC licenses at the six Florida stations. Broadcasters said they would attend an industry conference on obscenity. ABC president Allan Wallou said that Sunday's Oscar awards show would be audio and visually time-delayed for the first time in its 76-year history. http://www.newsday.com/news/local/ne...tics-headlines |
the high ratings alone set the community standard , even if the community is the nation or the locales where these shows are aired.
Gov. will never make the adjustments to standards needed as it will derail the agendas that have been in motion for so long. It's all a bunch of crap...If any of these companies or personalities had any balls they would stand up and fight. |
Let's be clear here. Freedom of speech has limitations.
D-Law, Would you feel that I had a right to free speech if I stood outside your office yelling profanities, telling everyone that enters your building that you are a crook (I don't know you from Adam, so I am stating an example) and generally making everyone uncomfortable about entering your building? Is that covered under freedom of speech? No? Hmmm, there must be some reasonable limitations on this basic right then. Who gets to decide what is reasonable freedom of speech and what is inappropriate for a certain time or place? Gotta be someone. Why can't you stand on the street corner naked? Everyone can just look the other way. It's not your problem, it's their issue. Sorry, but society has some basic standards of decency for public and Howard is on public airwaves. You may not like those standards, but quite frankly I think society has gone a little too far in the "what ever is good for you is cool with me" direction. |

You may not like those standards, but quite frankly I think society has gone a little too far in the "what ever is good for you is cool with me" direction. Standing ouside Brett's office, teeling evey passerby that he is a crook is protected speech, to the extent that it is true. If it is not true, then hello slander lawsuit. In addition, you may have to get a permit to protest there if it is on public property (reasonable measures for time, place, and manner may be imposed on free speech), and you may get hrown out on your ass if Brett's building is private property. I saw a 60+ y.o old guy standing on a corner on a busy thoroughfare last week, holding a sign that read" Babies Murdered Here." Not that it was visible from the street, but the driveway where he was standing lead to a women's clinic. So yes, you can stand there and make your point, to a point. As for who gets to decide what is reasonable, the law provides that the community decides what is reasonable. The standard is a mushy as Stecz20's ass. What may not be offensive in New York City, may offend everyone in Bumphuk, Ark. The law has been interpretted by various decisions on free speech to accomodate different people in different places. There are members of this Board that know these standards all too well. In fact, they may be closer to you than you think, perhaps even right next to you. |
Thankyou!! Saves me from ranting on about prior restraint, compelling governmental interests and adverse secondary effects...........

PHkn,
I think that we should open the first performance boat oriented law firm. Have you considered advertising on OSO?? |
d hlaw, first kevin must get a boat, then get rid of the minivan...i told you i could crack wall nuts in my ass, so is your statement considered slander. if so id like to hire you, to sue you....

Have you actually cracked a walnut in your ass??
