Whose Cat flipped on the Chesapeake?

Has anyone heard whose cat flipped on the Bay today? Saw some photos of it upside down on the news, but no info on who yet.

They showed some picts of it upside down and a little of the side but I didn't know who it was. It looks like a mid 30's skater.

According to USCG at 7:45PM: The boat and identities of those involved have not been released. Maryland State Police Trooper 1 and vessels from the USCG Actitivities Baltimore responded. 1 body has been recovered, the search for the 2nd continues. The accident occurred approximately 3nm east of Gibson Island. Cause of accident is still unknown at this time. Initial reports estimate the size of the boat to be over 30', and possibly jet propelled. Newschannel footage (Channel 13 WJZ) confirm the boat was a Cat type.

That's all I have right now. As we all know, most of the details as reported by the news are usually incorrect and many times exaggerated for drama effect. Two of the 3 inept news stations in Baltimore have already reported inaccurate information.

Some of the information coming by telephone (unconfirmed at this time) would lead CBPBA members to easily identify the boat and owner. Please keep those involved and their families in mind, and in your prayers. Until we get a full confirmation from USCG, let's keep this from getting out of hand.

I got a call at about 10PM with this info:

It was a new boat, brand new full canopy cat.
So far, there were two assumed aboard, and presumed deceased.
As of 10PM the boat was at Sandy Point, and the were attempting to right the boat. It was found floating upside down at in the Magothy River. As of the time of my update, no one had come forward that had seen the accident.

Two people lost their lives today doing something we all enjoy very much. Just trying to be respectful to the families involved. We now know more details, but waiting for an official confirmation from the public information officer.

mpally 02-29-2004 09:57 PM

I assume no one saw this boat flip?

Love Machine 02-29-2004 10:21 PM

Dang! I go skiing in western MD for the weekend and come back to this. An exploded tanker off of the MD atlantic coastline and a flipped offshore cat in chessie bay. :(

Many lives lost from the tanker. Looks like two lost from the cat. Condolensces to all lost.

Thank you for removing the name Brian. I think we all agree it's proper protocol and best practice to wait for official information before posting information like that in a public forum.

Maryland Department Natural Resource Police (DNR) will be investigating the accident and releasing more information in the morning. mpally, local news reported there the accident was observed.

Sydwayz 02-29-2004 10:33 PM

Agreed Keith.

I keep getting more choked up about this by the minute.

I saw a full canopied cat go by Saturday about 2:00 heading south. It was black and white with some red. I believe it may have been turbine powered with surface drives. They must have been to the Chesapeake Inn.
The water conditions were very flat. God Bless

Keith 02-29-2004 11:48 PM

That's exactly what I meant when I was referring to "inept news stations". I believe we'll have accurate information from DNR tomorrow and will post a follow up.

All too often in our lives we forget how fragile and precious life is. I, as well as many of you, have the inclination for running performance boats. Unfortunatly these joys we hold dear to our hearts can come with consiquence. We repeatedly try to explain to others the joy and excitment these machines bring us. They will never understand. We will meet on the weekends and share good times with friends we now know due to our love of the sport. When we lose someone from this small close knit community it hurts. I have read other posts about accidents that had a human price tag and though I felt bad for the families and friends I never really knew what it would feel like if it were someone I knew. I now know! I cant discribe what this is like but I know I dont like it very much. This accident comes two weeks after the loss of another friend of the sport. I know we will all move forward and never forget these people, but I must say things have changed. Maybe I am taking this ...I dont know but this loss has hit me hard and I am ..... Well I guess I just wanted to say something..... May the families of these fine people find comfort, I know the friends of these people will be there for them now and in the future. may the thoughts and prayers from all of us that boat on the chesapeake and beyond be with the families.

Jake1250 03-01-2004 06:28 AM

To those who may have past on in this horrible accident, we must remember that they will now be in a far greater place than any of us can imagine and rest in comfort that we may all be together again in Heaven. God Bless them and there families....
