Hi Guys, Sorry no luck yet. I have been away competing at one of our River Classics over the weekend and unfortunately blew a head gasket!!
I ski in Superclass here in Australia(which is the elite category) behind a twin turboed 500Chev 21 foot racecraft which will do well over 100mph in smooth water. I understand how rough the conditions can get at Catalina and would not expect to ski that fast there.

If Jason is skiing super class he is pretty good, maybe top 15 skier. For the Catalina race, an 80-85mph boat should be fine for men's open class. You'll be running 60ish most of the time if you are in the top 10. According to some race winning drivers, rarely do they go that fast, maybe right before the island turn they might hit 80-85 if you are one of the leaders and it's glassy.

The record is 52 minutes which is 71mph average. The race was won in 1990 with a stock 38 Fountain with stock mercruiser engines.

When is the ski race this year? I'll volunteer to be navigator or observer!

Sounds good. As I have never competed at Catalina before I would like a crew who has run the event before.(Or at least an observer) All of the Aussie skiiers I have spoken to have reinforced how important a good consistant run is. As mentioned earlier in the thread a 60mph average will win it outright!! I am hoping for a top 10 finish and would like a crew to understand and drive to the conditions. I have heard of some horror stories of inexperienced crews making the race very difficult. In regards to speed...Your boats are much bigger and the water is much bigger than what I'm used to!!! However I would be confident at sking at 60mph + in 2 foot water.

You guys hear that... the Aussie is confident skiing 60mph with 2 foot waves..... that's 60 miles per hour... not 60 kilometers per hour.. and 2 FOOT waves.. not 2 cm. waves........ I hope he can convert inch to metric better than JPL did on that mars lander that crashed a few years back...... :D Just kidding... good luck Matey....:p
