496 vs 496 HO

I was looking at a new boat a 2002 is there a huge difference between a 2002 496 vs a 496 HO ?

R Addiction 03-02-2004 10:19 PM

The 496 is a 496....and the 496 HO comes with a HO!!;)
We could always use a little HO!!;) Right CAP?:D

obnoxus 03-02-2004 10:23 PM

3mph!!! Is that top speed;) ?

SS930 03-03-2004 06:16 AM

From what I understand the 496 HO is the same engine as the 496 Mag but with a more radical cam profile and recalibrated computer.

The $4000 markup is typical Merc BS, it probably doesn't cost them one dollar more to manufacture the HO.

CigDaze 03-03-2004 07:25 AM

The difference between the two is cam and computer programming. Not a whole lot.

The difference in price between the engines only is about 1200 bucks!

However when buying engine/drive package the difference is about 5000 because Merc ships the 496 with a standard Bravo and the 496HO with an X drive.

rtaylor 03-03-2004 08:04 AM

So how much would one expect to spend on the 496 complete engine all the way to prop? I'm not much of an engine guy and get confused when prices are qupted, thinking certain pieces are missing.

CAP071 03-03-2004 08:22 AM

why even make both, Just make a 496 HO anything less go with a smaller CID motor. which would be what ? a scorpion?

CigDaze 03-03-2004 08:42 AM

This should give you a ballpark figure:

This is for engines only:

Fuelish Pleasures 03-03-2004 08:44 AM

When I bought my 496MAG it was about $4K more than the 6.2L and $4K less than the HO (never priced the Scorpion). Figured I would use that $4K I saved later to change the cam and look at other mods and possibly get a better bang for the buck. Check out http://www.raylarengine.com/ for some possible upgrades.

rtaylor 03-03-2004 09:07 AM

Thanks fellas:

These prices include exhaust and and everything else I would need?

suncoastdave 03-03-2004 04:14 PM

496ho all the way.

Indy 03-03-2004 04:44 PM

I didn't want an engine that wasn't running at its optimal configuration, I got the HO. I don't think I'd have been happy knowing that there were a few more horses to be had for a few extra dollars. You get over the dollars quick, but knowing there's more to be had for the lifetime of your boat isn't worth it...go for the HO.

R Addiction 03-03-2004 07:46 PM

Thats what I'd say.......GO FOR THE "HO" :D

Dano 03-03-2004 07:52 PM

It's about $1800 actually...best money you will spend in this sport. Get the HO...50ponies and no doubt 2-3mph in whatever hull it's in. You would be very shortsighted not to.

CAP071 03-03-2004 07:56 PM

Problem is it's a 2002 left over boat, as is, out the door. seems like a good deal just it has a 496 plain not HO :(

Maybe i can just whipple the Byach :eureka:

496 mag

I bought the 496 mag and spent $4000 between Whipple re-programming my ECM and a 5 psi procharger kit. Now I am at about 600hp and still with less money than the HO. Go with the mag and Supercharge it.:D

CAP071 03-03-2004 08:54 PM

did you do the whipple yourself?

FAST ENOUGH 03-03-2004 08:56 PM

I sent the 555 ecm to Whipple and the Procharger I did myself.

CAP071 03-03-2004 09:01 PM

OK I was looking at whiples chargers they want like $6,600 for the kit itself maybe I'll look 4 a used kit

FAST ENOUGH 03-03-2004 09:03 PM

I would definatly go Whipple. I just got a too good of deal on a used 496 Procharger Kit. Just ask around there has to be a better deal that $6600 for the Whipple kit. What size type of boat are you looking at???

CAP071 03-03-2004 09:05 PM

I'm looking at a new/ left over 2002 PQ 28

thosetwins 03-03-2004 09:34 PM

496ho

I live in OKC,OK these engines are produced in stillwater,OK 50 miles down the road. My good friend works at the mercusier plant he said the difference in cost to build between the MAG and the HO is $300 bucks at the factory. Cya

But I bet it costs them considerably more to buy the HO motor from GM. Then again, GM is only charging the big premium because they know Merc will.

CAP071 03-03-2004 09:40 PM

can you say HUGE profit, HUGE rip-off :D

SOX 03-03-2004 09:40 PM

I'm becomming a fan of the PQ's I was talking to a PQ/Sonic dealer and he favored the PQ! And from what I've see they seem to be well built

Question 2) If you add a charger do you have to run a higher octane fuel?

thosetwins 03-03-2004 09:48 PM

Merc likes to stick that HO up your A$$ sideways!

Sox, were you at Tomes? (Sonic and PQ sold there)

Hi Octane is always better if your Huffed.....but an intercooler is a definite....my 2 cents;)

Ding Ding Ding! you got it... I've been looking at them since I bought my boat. Even the screws on the boat all are set the same way (+) I'm a sucker for the little details :D Thats why I love my boat

R Addiction 03-03-2004 10:14 PM

Sox, was that pic taken at the flats?

Looks nice!!! The previous owner must have taken great care of your Ebb:D

SOX 03-03-2004 10:47 PM

Thanks, C_SPRAY took the pic. when he had it. If you have to buy used it, you couldn't ask for a better previous owner than him :)

CAP, keep us posted on that PQ!!!!!!!!!!!

Chris288 03-04-2004 07:45 AM

Why not just go w/ those new aluminum heads, bolt them on and you got 500 ponies, for 3,500. now if I can just remember who makes them...

CigDaze 03-04-2004 08:09 AM

Raylar or Raynar...something like that.

rtaylor 03-04-2004 08:26 AM

Fast Enough

But what does Whippling do to reliability, for a guy who isnt too savvy when it comes to engines?

Chris288 03-04-2004 08:37 AM

www.raylarengine.com how could you go wrong,, bolt on over 500 hp, with reliability and without the hassle of a S.C.
