Push-Button Ignition -how did they do that?

I had a Ford mud truck with a high compression 460. The only way to start that thing was to spin the starter then send spark to it. Side benefit was you had a small amount of oil pressure prior to lighting up. It had an assortment of switches on the dash, I just left the keys in it and assumed the average thief would not figure out the sequence.

Funny how something that went away on most vehicles 40 years ago is now considered "Cool".
When I was a kid on the farm all of our tractors started that way.

Although I've only seen it a few times, the really old electric starters used a start pedal. When you pressed on it it would jumper the positive cable to the starter and push the drive gear into the flywheel all at the same time. Thank goodness they figured out how to do it with a solenoid instead
