Grand Haven, Michigan Offshore Race (Press Release)
3-8-04
PRESS RELEASE
Lake Michigan Offshore Racing Association (LMORA) and its principals
Marc Blondin and Cherie Girard have announced that they will NOT be producing or promoting an offshore power boat race in Grand Haven Michigan in the 2004 year. This was a very difficult but necessary decision. LMORA has hosted the very successful Grand Haven Offshore powerboat racing Challenge in 2002 and 2003 and has decided to take a break from this very time consuming and financially cumbersome event. Blondin and Girard plan to participate in more poker runs and do some recreational boating of their own in 2004.
“Given the state of offshore racing, the politics involved, and major changes among race sanctioning bodies, we have decided to not plan a race for 2004. We will review the possibility of promoting a race in Grand Haven in 2005.” says Girard.
LMORA wishes to thank the city of Grand Haven, the Grand Haven Coast Guard, Great Lakes Silver Cup Series, sponsors, and volunteers for their outstanding efforts in helping to bring offshore racing back to Grand Haven.
However, Grand Haven may not be without offshore racing in 2004. According to applications filed with the city of Grand Haven, Keith Holmes of Cat Can Do racing has approached city officials regarding an Offshore Super Series race in the city. The event is being planned by the West Michigan Powerboat Association (WMPA). According to city applications the Great Lakes Silver Cup Series may also be involved again this year with WMPA.
LMORA wishes WMPA the best of luck in there effort to continue offshore racing in Grand Haven in 2004 and hope they have a safe event.

Marc,
Thank you for all your hard work in the past. Grand Haven has always been a great place to host a race and you and your team have done a great job of keeping with the tradition.
Keith is a great successor and should pull off a huge event!

Ron,
Not really
We have plenty of people asking if we were doing a race again this year
This was a good way to let every one know our intentions
I think it is better than just saying nothing
and having everyone wonder, call, and email us about what we might do regarding a race
don't you ?
It is also only fair to let those know
who may have planned a visit that weekend to see the races that we are not putting the event on
we had over 2000 spectator boats and an estimated 100,000 total spectators at last years race
I feel this press release is appropriate to let as many persons know as is possible
as far as unique
maybe your right its that too
I Like being unique
PS SOTW is still on July 9th and 10th in Grand Haven, Michigan no changes there

Thanks for the info Mark. Kinda figured this was the way it was going to go after talking to you at the boat shows.
Hopefully Keith and his team can bring a OSS race here. I'd be up for a spot as a patrol boat for them (if I still own a boat at that time).

Actually, it was unique in a good way. If a long standing event won't happen, why not tell people about it.
Hopefully you'll bring it back next year.
