Default History lesson - older Scarabs

Being a relative young'un, I don't know much of the history of offshore racing and production boats. I know that Wellcraft builds or built the Scarab line of offshore boats, but I keep hearing about "Larry Smith" who was somehow involved. Who is this guy and what's the story there?

Further, I've seen some older - mid-80's or so - Scarabs that look an awful lot like a Cigarette. Flat Transoms, flat deck, windscreen, etc. Some are even advertised as having kevlar layup. What's the story on these boats? Were they well made? How do they compare to a similar vintage Formula or Cigarette in terms of build quality and performance?
