Wanna be a boating casualty?
...here are the Coast Guard's 2003 boating list of casualties....
2003 Coast Guard Data Total boating casualties nationally: 524 Those casualties with life Jackets on: 82 Those casualties without life jackets on: 442 84% of all casualties did NOT have life jackets on..... so don't worry about Cats or V's being safer...there is the number one factor....wear a life vest folks! ...I may look like a nerd with one on ...but hey...the facts speak for themselves.....even drunk boaters were not close....in fatalities/casualties... |
...and now compare boating overall casualties vs. auto or plane casualties....with a life jacket ON....boating is probably one of the safest forms of transportation around...amazing?
. |
so now I am wondering why insurance rates are SO HIGH FOR BOATERS.....more people are casualties walking to cross a street than in all boating casualties for the whole year of 2003....
....thousands of car casualties....thousands of aviation casualties....500 or so boating casualties? it's really amazing....just wear a life jacket! |

How many boater have claims for broken drives? Or stolen boats? I bet that has a big part in the rates also. |

anyone up for the "History of Reggie?
Reggie Fountain entered his first boat race in 1954 at the age of 14. He moved quickly into professional competition in 1970, and set many world records and won many championships. In 1978 he retired from active competition to begin an extensive research and development testing program commissioned by Mercury Marine. He started with a 31-foot V-bottom Excalibur Boat, and modified it extensively to improve both the handling and acceleration. This was the start of what is now Fountain Powerboats. In addition to world-renowned sport boats, Reggie Fountain has also developed a successful line of outboard and stern drive fishing boats. Fountain personally masterminds all engineering and product Research and Development within the company. He was among the first to use bi- and tri-directional glass along with lightweight coring material, and was also one of the first to successfully utilize a notch transom, pad keel running surface for improved handling and performance. Once a hull mold is created, Fountain performs all initial on-the-water testing and then collaborates with his staff on interior design and graphic styling. He still logs approximately 1,000 hours a year on the water. In 1990, Reggie Fountain returned to racing to set the V-bottom world speed record twice. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina with degrees in Business and Law. |

LPA
Reggie built 6 cats from MTI's 42 foot mold. He DID sell them. They DID go to market. The deal just didn't do what Scism hoped, and he pulled the molds back in house. No bad blood, just no more Fountain/Scism cat. My friend has number 3 or 4 of the 6. |

Aviation is regulated by the strictest of licensing requirements and Federal laws. Boating is not. Apples to oranges. Air travel is statistically by far the safest means of travel today. Compare boats to autos, maybe....... but a lot more people drive cars than boats. Alcohol plays a HUGE part in deaths in both.:( |
Originally posted by LPA2106 exactly Mr. Capo....the main reason for high insurance rates are tons of claims....LOTS OF FRAUD TOO OH GEE I can't afford this high dollar boat anymore but i owe the bank 300K on it. Damn someone stole my boat. Oh damn someone stole my drive again! I bet more then 1/2 the claims are Bogus  |
Figures can be made to look how ever you want them to.
Isn't that why they say "figures lie and liars figure"? |
Is it snowing yet ?

LPA, you definitely said one thing that is irrefutable: "you may look like a nerd with one on..."
|
and you're absolutely right jafo, flying is by far the safest mode of transportation. I take serious exception, though with anyone calling boating transportation.
and yes, I ride a motorcyle without a hemet. its natural selection at its finest. |
