I am looking to buy a boat from an owner that has registered the boat in New Hampshire. New Hampshire does not issue titles for boats. To title a boat in Maryland (my home state) you need a sales agreement and a copy of the current registration from the non-title state.

How does one ensure that there is no bank lien on the boat? Thanks.

hire a title agent to do a title/lein search, and to do all the registration for you.

UCC-1 search and a coast guard documentation search, also call the local recorder and ask what they use to perfect a lien if not a UCC filing.

Better yet call Marine Title Company at 206-286-8994 and see if they will handle the transaction for you.
