Trailer Tie Down

1 Attachment(s)
I've been trying to figure out how I can tie down the stern of the boat to the trailer. I haven't found a straight line from the pad eyes to any point on the trailer because the tabs are in the way.

Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreceiated.

mopower 03-21-2004 10:45 AM

I go from my eye over the tab , around the outside of the tab to the trailer on my Formula. Been doing it for years with no problem:)

Do you have any other pictures of the boat?

ohhh if is our trailer, we can build you rear step pads with strap slots to the outer edge. Will keep straps off tabs.

GLH 03-21-2004 12:31 PM

I had a similar set up with my Cafe and I just wrapped the strap around the final cross member on each side and tied it to the hook on each side of the rear transome. Yours will run around your tabs but no bigs.

Hi-Tech - I believe it is your trailer I'm riding on based on that it says Hi-Tech on it and it was built in Panama City. I'd love your help getting the stern tied down. I'll PM you with contact info - any help your willing to give will be greatly appreciated.

You are more than welcome to use the pictures - I have three on the trailer - one with no people. I can send to you if you like.

By the way - this is the biggest boat I have ever trailered and this weekend was my first time in the water with it. The trailer towed, launched and loaded super. It was nice and easy - just the way it should be.

:D

olemissalum 03-22-2004 10:31 AM

Reed, boat looks nice!! Sold the other one yet?? Are you going to the races in Biloxi?? I will be coming down that weekend to go fishing and then may head over there on Sunday. Would love to see the new one in the water;)

Downtown42 03-22-2004 10:36 AM

My Myco with engine guard/bumper, has 2 tie downs on the front only. Straps hook to eye and angle slighty rear to the trailer. I was told that I never needed rear tie-downs. Am I in danger here?

Sydwayz 03-22-2004 10:48 AM

I tie down in no less to five places. I had a convo with some SCOPE guys this weekend, and granted, while some of us would love to have our boat totalled via cheese grate to oblivion via Interstate/Freeway, think of the liability if that thing hurt someone coming off the trailer. Tieing down via just cranking the bow eye up to the bottom of the winch post is NOT enough. Just ask Frank Hubble here in Virginia how bad his Hustler looked when it flipped off the trailer, after the wheels fell into a ditch when another car when is his lane. How many hours of airbrushing were detroyed?

At minimum, you need two rear tie downs. That is what the transom hooks are for. I keep two ratchet straps rated for 10K each, one on each side of the transom. I keep the bow eye, below the winch stand roller, with the winch tight. And, I keep two latch straps, also to the bow eye, angled back toward the fenders, to keep the boat from sliding forward. My boat has moved on my trailer as much as two inches in rapid breaking, (before the trailer was adjusted properly to fit the boat).

Please folks, strap down the transoms.

Jim, I'll be at the races in Biloxi, but hopefully the new boat will be in Orange Beach for the summer by then. Hopefully I'm going to be a patrol boat both days in a different boat.

I still haven't sold the 27, so if you hear of anyone interested send em' my way. I hear the ling are starting to show up so hopefully the fishing will be good for you.

The boat I'm supposed to be on is named M.T. Pockets - please say hello if you see me.

olemissalum 03-22-2004 01:33 PM

Will look for you. We may just come in from the gas rigs and watch the race by boat on Saturday before heading back to P'Goula. Will be in Ricky's boat, 26' Dusky center console. Hopefully the race will have a good turnout.

Big fines in our state if your pulling without tie downs.

PhantomChaos 03-22-2004 03:27 PM

I used to use tie downs, but got lazy. The only reason I really need them is because I have a FORD PSD and it has so much power that the boat could actually fall off the back when accelerating. :D :D

DT, like anything, most of the time you don't need them HOWEVER the one time you need them, you will be glad you had them.

I also tie down my bow eye straight down to the trailer to prevent up/down movement because the winch strap does allow some movement on bad jittery roads. Rear is always strapped as well. Just takes a few extra minutes and to me is worth it.

Thanks for the help:)

If your going around the planes is there no worry about if things went really bad ripping the tab off the transom? I guess if things went that bad it's better than having your boat destroyed because it wasn't tied down at all.

Do you go around the inside or outside of the planes to the trailer?

Hi-Tech Marine 03-22-2004 07:48 PM

Thanks for the positive report on towing and Loading. Thats the goal.

I will contact you about adding step pads with ratchet straps. This will keep the straps from loading the tabs.
I will need to get you to verify a couple of measurments though.

If you decide you want aluminum wheels I will get them to you at cost.

Again, love the graphics.

h2owarrior 03-22-2004 10:06 PM

I had a similar situation with our 37 AT. We went around the outside of the tab. We put a soft cloth between the strap and tab to be sure it did not chafe.

I cannot tell from the picture, but can you cross the straps and attach them to the trailer on either side of the marker lights ? If would look like an X from the back with the left strap running from the left eye on the boat to the right side of the three market lights in the center of the trailer just below the keel. And then do the reverse with the right side strap.

Might not work, but you have a severe angle on that tab with the strap.

Pic of mine from side, with my lousy too short I-beams, but I make the best of it. Very slight touch as strap follows bend of hull toward eyelet. Works great... last long time. You can see however, how tightening pushes the boat forward, which is why, I have front tie-downs too, holding back.

I will get with you and we will add the step pads extending the pads behind the fender (this is why we use extended the frame rails). This will give you a straight line to the hook and a place to stand in the back. Additionally, it looks like we can lower the boat in the trailer if you would prefer that.

Fortunately the crossmember is near the transom.

This is the 35 Lightning ....low in the trailer

Side pics of tie down on last years rig, I wrapeped it around the cross beam and hooked back on the strap. This was a Hi-Tech trailer also.

NICE BOATS, BUT I NOTICED NO DRIVE LOCKS OR PROP LOCKS??

restabr 03-23-2004 10:35 AM

I've got prop and drive locks on mine, but they are the standard nut & key variety. I'm assuming that the drive locks on Troutly's 382 are yours - never seen them before. How do they work?? Do you have prop locks??

I actually had a drive stolen off a boat in a lift out over water - still don't know how those idiots did it. But, it was a major pain figuring out how to get the boat out of the lift and to the launch ramp with a drive size hole in the transom. Soooo - I'm a serious believer in locks!!!

Stern Lock 03-23-2004 11:29 AM

Yes i have prop locks,if you go to finaly wearing protection thread you will see photos. or go to stern lock.com

ActiveFun 03-23-2004 01:06 PM

What I did was purchase stainless steel eyes/loop type and thru bolted them to the rails under the eyes or cleats on the boat. Use ratchet type tie down from your eyes or cleats on the boat to the new loops.

Thunder32 03-23-2004 01:33 PM

Nice pics, as said before, don't forget the locks. Just purchased mine with Craig at Stern Lock. And of course all OSO Members get a DISCOUNT.
