How Fast? 2003 Baja 33 Outlaw w/496HO's
1 Attachment(s)
SO....any ideas on how fast a 33' Baja Outlaw with 496HO's is? For lack of details we'll say 1/2 load of fuel and 2 adults with zero wind and 75 degrees at 500' above sea level (give or take). Not sure on prop size/pitch but take a look at the speedo in this picture....is it possible or is the speedo not even close?
Give me your closest estimates :) |
73-74. (GPS)
|
I agree w/ JTB 73-74
|
73-74
 |
so in 20 minutes since I posted this thread the speed has increased by 5 MPH. At that rate we'll hit 100MPH in a little more than an hour and 15 minutes.
    |
MY GOD MAN! IT's stuck at 0 MPH damn BAJA"s :D
|
105....oops jumped the gun....still have an hour to go.
|
The purpose for this thread is to prove to my friend that his boat is not as fast as he thinks it is. He says it will go 81 or 82 and I said "NO WAY". Not even going down current with a 30MPH wind behind you!
Oh yeah...FYI, I don't have a Baja :D ;) |
|
Gary, how fast was your Cafe with the same power?? The cafe weighs just a bit more than the Baja so I'd say 68-69 MPH.
|
a lot of heavy v-bottoms non stepped are like 190 constants...did the Fountain crunching and they are between a fast v-bottom and a cat...so is Ol and stepped cigs
|
My guess is 75-77. Is that speedo pitot tube, or GPS? The pitot will show approximately 4-5 faster at those speeds which would show what he's showing...
|
I'm going to say 68-69.

Just checked that Bam calculator link above. I used both 8000 lbs and 8500 lbs. I also used 240 as the constant (more towards heavy twin hull design) and the speed crunched out at 75-77. My guess was fairly close. Anyone have any real time experience with the 33...?

Originally posted by thisistank Gary, how fast was your Cafe with the same power?? The cafe weighs just a bit more than the Baja so I'd say 68-69 MPH. I never dialed the props with the 496's, but ran them up to 4800 rpm. I figured I was running around 68+. I think the Baja should run a lot faster due to the weight, length and, more than likely, a faster bottom. G |
I know someone on another board that did a sea trial this past Saturday and it did 75.2 GPS. He said he didn't have time to play around much with the trim because the rain was moving in. I would say anything over 77MPH would be a stretch

74

G, that's what I thought...I was just comparing to your old Cafe. The Baja bottom is fairly similar to the Cig bottom. and I think the cafe only weighed like 1000 more. If your seeing 75 with that package, that's nothing to scoff at. Turn Key power, good speed, in a killer looking boat for a good price. Sounds good to me...However, my Baja is for sale...Cig please, thanks. :D :D

I would guess between 72-74 mph but not anywhere near 80.
I talked to a guy that had a 33 with whippled 496's that dyno'd at 650hp and he was hittin 91 but that was with a blueprinted hull and completely dialed in with props and such. Don't know if this helps but my.02. |

Boat weighs 7500lbs. 500 efis 78-80 depending on props. 496ho's my guess would be 74=76.
|
Under 70 MPH if stock, stock, stock....
|
75 - 77 is correct.
|
73-75 was the fastest I ever saw(speedo) in 3 seperate Baja 33's w/HOs....Never will hit 80 unless topped with Whipples.
|
That config. is exactly what I'm running. My best this past summer was 78 on the speedo.

33 outlaw
i have a 99' 33 outlaw with 385hp mags, vortec air cleaners, fuel preasure reg and msd ignition (stock logs)
it only has 35 hrs. on her and i barely touch 70 mph based on the 425hp and 26 p props that boat would be lucky to see 75mph, blue print the props and you easily would see 76-77. (on a "perfect day" no humidity 1' chop) jcboats |

Great information guys....it's good to know that I'm still much faster (but smaller :()
|
What pitch props are we talking?
|
Sea Ya...in my original post I mentioned that I don't know the size/pitch of the props but I'm guessing 26 bravo ones.
As for the speedo...it's a pitot tube speedo. That's what led me to believe that the speedo is way off. I'm guessing 75-77 tops with stock HO's. |
This boat will not run 75mph.
I used to own one... DP |
388...now that sounds like firm facts to me. What kind of speeds were you seeing?
So far the range is 70-77....can you get it any closer? |
My 29 has HO's. I can usually get the Gaffrig liquid speedo to bounce between 80-82mph but the best GPS I have ever seen was 79.3mph however, that was with RPM's reading 5100-5200. Notice the boat in the picture is only making 4800 RPM's.
|
why argue? who cares its a baja:rolleyes:
btw i sea trialed a t/s 30 cig w/ t496ho and it ran 79 on gps 33 baja no step 75+? no f#$$$% way |
Mine had 385's.
It would only run 68 WFO. (before I put blowers on it) No way 425's will p/u more than 3-4 mph... Maybe his hull is better than mine, but I seriously doubt the boat will run faster than 72. I'm not an expert by any strech of the imagination. Just a little experience with a similar boat. Dean |
Hey guys.....first and foremost...I'm not a Baja fanatic at all. I have some great friends that own them and have been more than happy with them. I'm just trying to confirm or not confirm that the boat can go fast enough to bury the 70MPH speedo down to the 6 o'clock point.
|
Only if the speedo is incorrect or broken...
|
oh boy here comes the Baja ragging........let me get the popcorn started. :)
|
This thread is not intended to bash a brand or even a particular boat. It was put up here to get accurate speeds of the boat with stock 496HO power. That's it.
Please no bashing....now about that malfunctioning speedo....feel free to comment openly :) |
