OSO Gathering - Lake Travis (Austin, TX) - April 16th

I am giving an open invitation to all OSO members to party in April.

We will meet Friday evening, April 16th, at Carlos'N Charlies on Lake Travis in Austin, TX.

The next day there is a Baja Poker Run sponsored by Ski Dock. You must own a Baja to buy a hand, but anyone can "run the run".

After the Poker Run, we will all raftup in Devil's Cove. It will be "rocking" in April!

Let's start the 2004 boating season with a party! :D

JohnJan 03-30-2004 08:13 AM

No more Travis for me...

Sold the red T'bred to the very lucky man from Galveston.

ST31 03-30-2004 08:40 AM

I plan on being there. Looking forward to meeting everyone.

The best place to launch is at the Mansfield Dam Park.

You can tieup at Carlos'N Charlies and sleep on your boat.

If you want to get a hotel room, then check out the Lakeway Inn. You should be able to get a slip at the Lakeway Marina.

JPD Motorsports 03-31-2004 02:47 PM

Not to sound dumb, but how long is that lake? looking at the map for the baja run its quite a distance.

Clay Washington 03-31-2004 03:32 PM

Carlos'N Charlies is at Mile Marker 9. Ridge Harbor (which is usually a stop) is at Mile Marker 45.

ST31 04-01-2004 09:11 AM

Clay, how far is it from lakeway to Carlos and Charlies? Would it be worth just getting a slip at Carlos and Charlies over Lakeway?

Thanks

Formula78 04-01-2004 09:24 AM

Ok,.. Who wants to take me out on their boat? My Formula is in a million pieces still! ARGH! :hothead:

The end is in sight! The motor is on the engine stand in my garage! Although I suspect that my machine shop screwed me. I KNOW the block did not get hot tanked, makes me wonder if it got magnafluxed.

Half Fast 04-01-2004 01:23 PM

Clay, I started to make plans to come but then I remembered. I'm in Iraq! Arghh! Hey man, write me an email sometime. I heard some sad news about your nuptual situation from Kelly. I wish it wasn't so for both your sakes but I definitely understand I been there myself a couple times. Talk to you later.

but i did make it in 9 one time!

Formula78 04-02-2004 08:33 AM

Haha,. Thanks baja, I'll make it out to check out the action and nice boats!

If anyone needs a place to crash I live in the Mansions at Steiner Ranch which is less than 2 minutes from Mansfield.

Hopefully soneone can find a spot in their boat for me! (SO wishes I had more time to work on the Formula, I might have to bring out the ACK! Bow Rider! NOOO! :o )

ST31 04-02-2004 08:41 AM

Not sure yet how many I will have on my boat. So far it looks like I have a full one with friends coming in from Dallas, but if I end up with an empty spot I will let you know.

Of course that all depends on if I get my boat back in time from having the engines rebuilt. :(

RANDAL WALKER 04-02-2004 08:54 AM

I AM PICKING UP MY NEW ELIMINATOR IN FORT WORTH THAT WEEK. I AM DRIVING FROM SOUTH CAROLINA AND ELIMINATOR IS SENDING ABOUT HALFWAY FROM CALIFORNIA. I AM NEW TO OSO AND WOULD LIKE TO EXPERIENCE THIS EVENT, THIS WILL BE MY FIRST EXPERIENCE AT A POKER RUN. SHOULD I RENT A SLIP AT THE MARINA IF I AM GOING TO STAY AT THE HOTEL OR SHOULD I JUST PUT IT ON THE TRAILER THAT NIGHT.

Joe 04-02-2004 09:07 AM

Randal, Welcome aboard!

Slips at Lakeway are $35/night.... No reservations, but here's their # anyway: 512-261-7511 Marine // 800-lakeway Hotel.

If you haven't been on the lake before, be careful. You can get in trouble quickly. If you get in a bad spot and you're not sure where to go... default to the Cliff side of the lake, it's "usually" deep whereas the lower elevation is "usually" shallow.

~and to answer a future question... no, your depth finder will be working fine. It's not unusual to see 180' in depth.

Give me a call or e-mail if you'd like. I'll be there that weekend. 832-277-3661 Joe

ST31 04-02-2004 09:20 AM

Randal,

Welcome to the board and congrats on the new boat. Sounds like this is changing from a Baja event to an OSO event quickly, Ha! I plan on heading down from Dallas to Austin on Friday morning. Not sure on where I will keep the boat yet. Either Lakeway or at Carlos N Charlies most likely.

Joe,

I am new to driving on the lake as well so I may be following you around. :D

Clay Washington 04-02-2004 11:28 AM

To Randal and others...

If you want to get a hotel room, then check out the Lakeway Inn. You should be able to get a slip at the Lakeway Marina. They are both at Mile Marker 17.

If you want to sleep on your boat, you can tieup at Carlos'N Charlies. It is at Mile Marker 9. There are no slips to rent there, but they have several courtesy slips and several hundred feet of dock space. They allow people to use this area overnight because they assume that you will eat and party there and buy drinks until 2:00am! :p

Clay Washington 04-02-2004 11:36 AM

You can get a map of the lake at a local Walmart. However, the lake has green and red channel bouys with numbers on them (Mile Markers). They also have blinking lights on them at night. As long as you cruise from bouy to bouy, you should be fine.

All shallow areas in the main channel are clearly marked. There is really only one "dangerous" area and it is located in a side tributary called Cow Creek (Mile Marker 32). Cow Creek is a favorite raftup site. However, getting there can be a little tricky. You have to swing wide right of a rock "wall" in the mouth of the tributary. Just follow a local and stay in their wake.

Otherwise, Lake Travis is a deep, clear, safe lake.

Let's party!

Riiiiiight, Clay.... Like you're able to focus on the bouy's after 4 hrs. of mass consumption in the cove! haha. :D

Thank goodness we're all going to C&C now rather than Sam Hill's/J Fins. Much shorter trip!!! (Beer goggles  )

HOW FAR IS DEVIL'S COVE FROM CARLO'S AND CHARLIES AND ABOUT HOW LONG DOES A POKER RUN LAST? I THINK I AM GOING TO LOVE TEXAS!

you could swim to devils cove from cnc's. directly across lake. a poker runs last ALL DAY LONG. 10-5ish, then you party the rest of the night

Lake Travis Map

Here is a crude PDF map of Lake Travis.

Devil's cove in the long cove just northwest (upper left) of Carlos'N Charlies.

Official Poker Run Schedule

Here is the official Poker Run schedule:

Remember - Non-Baja owners cannot buy a hand! We are basically "crashing" the party. :D

Start at Carlos'N Charlies (mile Marker 9)

Around noon, cruise to Ridge Harbor (Mile Marker 45).

Cruise back to Johnny Fins for lunch.

Finish at Carlos'N Charlies.

Clay Washington 04-03-2004 08:34 AM

Unofficial Poker Run Schedule

Now that you know the official Poker Run schedule, here's what I propose to do... :p

Start at Carlos'N Charlies (mile Marker 9) on Saturday morning. They should have breakfast tacos.

Around noon (or earlier), cruise to Ridge Harbor (Mile Marker 45).

On the return trip, skip Johnny Fins and go straight to Devil's Cove! As long as you have plenty of food and drinks onboard, there is no need to go to Johnny Fins.

We will raftup and start the serious partying. The water cops there are cool. As long as you are not endangering yourself or others, they will leave you alone.

I will probably get there first :D , so look for a solid red bowrider with an old fart at the helm and an all-girl crew.

Around sunset, we will go back to Carlos'N Charlies and party until closing.

Any questions? :p

robyw1 04-03-2004 10:40 AM

That sounds like a lot of fun. I haven't been to Travis since I was a kid. I will see if I can make it.

Roby

ST31 04-03-2004 10:49 AM

Clay,

Got the call from Bob yesterday that the boat is ready. I plan on being in Austin next week to take her out for a test drive, get the bugs out, and then drop it off to be detailed.

Running out of time. Would like to have my new stereo head unit installed, and put on the new steering wheel before the 17th.

Half Fast 04-03-2004 11:48 AM

Clay,
I'm doing OK. Stuck inside the 12 ft high blast wall encapsulated camp and work site. Surrounded by guys with guns to keep the bad guys away. We get a mortar or missile attack about once a week but they keep missing. The work is boring and so is the life but the paychecks look nice. I get a two week R&R in a couple weeks but I'm going to Ohio to see my lady friend and then up to Michigan to vist my family. I won't get back to TX till the next R&R around the end of July. I'm already looking forward to that one! I might have to cop a ride on your boat as I don't know if I'll have time to get mine out of mothballs. I might though just to get a few days on the water. We should finish up the job here in late September then I'll be home for good. There is another small job they want us to do but I don't think I'll sign up for it. It will be too dangerous as you have to commute out to the job every day from the camp. The job is right along side the road too where the bad guys can drive by and shoot or bomb us. Not for me that job. Too bad I'm gonna miss the boat season but I'll be ready for some serious riding when I get home for good. Shoot me an e-mail so we can converse without boring all the OSO family. See you later. Sageman.

Joe 04-03-2004 05:10 PM

I posted this earlier and didn't realize my membership renewal wasn't working yet. It is now... So, here's the stmt. again:

Since Clay has organized for us to all meet at C&C's Friday night, LET'S ALL SHOW UP IN our OSO SHIRTS so we'll at least know who's there and we can all introduce ourselves to each other, all right?

FYI - the boat's FINALLY back together!! :D Just ran it for the first time today: New motors & closed-cooling/lab'd props/reprogramed computers/1800 watt stereo -- freshly waxed and itching to SPANK CLAY'S @SS! :D (Boy, will I never hear the end of it if he beats me!:( ).

See everyone Friday night in your OSO shirts!
