Who dislikes blow-boats... and why

Post your reasons for either liking or disliking blow-boats....

MitchStellin 04-08-2004 11:49 PM

Yes they have a steeped tradition, one motor boats could never compare to. I have raced hundreds of races in my life from 80 miles to 260 miles, they are quiet and the fuel is free. I still like the point and go effect of the motor boat:D and will never own a sailboat. There is nothing better than chasing power boats down the channel at 9 knots with the chute up, we were not under power so people had to get out of our way:D There ok but I want speed and convenience so go fast it is.:D

Strip Poker 388 04-09-2004 01:16 AM

I don't have a prob with the boats just the general type of people on them.

Shah Mat 04-09-2004 04:33 AM

I may catch some crap for saying this but..

Maybe when I get old and have my winter house on a Caribbean Island, I may look into having one tied to my dock..... Next to my go-fast of course.

As far as sailboats and the owners.... Kinda like a group of bicyclist on a busy road. In the way, a pain in the azz to get around, but have just as much right to be there as I do.

The Menace 04-09-2004 05:10 AM

GREAT analogy

Absolutely right....

They are quite friendly though. They wave everytime I go by but usually only with one finger up? What's up with that? Just like guys fishing I get the same response.

I always wave back but with all five fingers.

CAP071 04-09-2004 05:38 AM

I'd rather have 20 blow boats, before 1 go fast boat with, 1 drunk unexperienced owner showing it off to his 4 budies who are also drunk at 100 mph +

Donzi Corleone 04-09-2004 06:45 AM

Im with Strip poker. they always seem to be stuck up tree huggers with a plan to keep the eco system in ck.

Dave M 04-09-2004 06:52 AM

They don't really bother me, I just blast on by.

Formula Outlaw 04-09-2004 07:01 AM

While I have a strong disllike for them, generally due to the self centered "water hogs" that are aboard them, I will defend their right to be there. Like Frank said, they resemble the tree hugging "greenies" to a strong degree. The "if I don't like it, you can't do it" mentality. I actually wave to most, very seldom get a wave back, and usually only one finger. I am always curteous in going around them, slow down for them, and yet they still give me "the look". I just laugh at them, and if they are being overly obnoxious, blow them a kiss.

GLH 04-09-2004 07:06 AM

Don't care

But they usually are cheap f*cks

Also some of them point to the sky with a middle finger when you go by???? It's true and every time this happens I turn around and circle them a few time to make sure I see it right... very weird ritual???

Indy 04-09-2004 07:08 AM

I can sail a beam reach better than most of them! We don't have a lot of the issues you all refer to in these waters (Long Island Sound). Most are friendly and love the water as much as we do. I've actually found that powerboaters have more attitude than the sailors do. There are some real jerks running those things.

Cattitude 04-09-2004 07:43 AM

It's a pretty diverse bunch as are we. There's several on our lake that I know and am friendly with. The owner of the race car shop (circle track) which sponsors my rockcrawling racing (builds my chassis) races in all the local regatta's, owns 13 sailboats, most of them projects (Too old with sails???)

When I lived in Ft Walton beach I had a nacra which is a racing cat, I used if for pleasure (mostly chasing women) and raced it as well. Like powerboats, performace sailing cats are a blast- at least if the wind is blowing:D

I've got a Miami buddy who uses his 50ish' sailboat as a support boat in some of the offshore races.

I don't care if you have a 100 sailboaters, powerboaters, fisherman, skiboats, pontoon boats, statistically, some of them are going to be idiots. Some are going to give the one fingered wave, and some are going to deserve getting it.;)

check freak 04-09-2004 07:49 AM

I am with Strip Poker. Most of the sailers I have run into, no pun intended, think they own the water. They do not follow the rules of the water, and the always think they have the right of way even when they are under power. They are a bunch of tree hugging smucks.

By the way, I had one almost broad side me as I was backing my dad's 36' cabin cruiser into the slip. The guy came about 2" from taking off the bow of my boat. Needless to say, he got a good cussing and I received a well put from all the other boaters within ear shot.

formula31 04-09-2004 08:06 AM

CLANG CLANG CLANG CLANG CLANG CLANG CLANG. All night long. I hate to admit it but Ive accidentally (hehe) cut the lines on couple of those sailbotes that were banging on the mast incessantly.

Downtown42 04-09-2004 08:49 AM

Don't matter to me. Have had cruisers in the past with seasonal slips next to them and they like to party. Most of them are ok. Too many flies and bugs when sailing for me. BORING.....

MitchStellin 04-09-2004 09:13 AM

Hey Formula, those are called halyards:D You don't know what a b itch it is to get those back down or re thread them thru the blocks. I think you are all right, we give them courtesy and they give us the finger, but we are better for trying to be nice, they just don't realize they may need us for a tow and their actions tell us they would rather swim home.

HyperBaja 04-09-2004 09:37 AM

Hate.

1. I have never met a sail boater who is even close to sane.

2. Every sailor I know causes problems.

Sydwayz 04-09-2004 09:45 AM

They really do nothing for me, however... having caught some of the BMW and Americas Cup on ESPN and such, and seeing how much of a strategic and thinking game it is to racing them, I found that really interesting...tacking and maneuvering, especially cutting a turn bouy and taking another boats wind. I know it is tiring, but I would not mind participating in one of those races. I just would not want to have to go thru all the BS to be an experienced sailor before they let you race. Pleasure sailing though... not for me.

JROMY 04-09-2004 10:01 AM

Amazing the difference in mentality between us and most of them. Out of any of these posts above, no matter how much anyone hates sailboats, you don't see any mention of trying to kick them off the water. Certainly not the attitude most of them have about us....

PhantomChaos 04-09-2004 10:01 AM

Any boat is good for me as long as it floats! I've had a sail boat, and I'll probably have another one some day. Just love being on the water!

JPD Motorsports 04-09-2004 10:22 AM

Most of the blowboaters in the gulf side are rude, asses, tacking in front of ya running down the icw at 1mph running a zig zag pattern and get pissed when you go to pass, while doing so they give the one up wave. Then there is the handfull that like the powerboaters and wave take pics and respect the water ways with other boaters out there and will actually be curtious on the water. Guess it depends on if they got laid the night before on there mood the next day.

HyperBaja 04-09-2004 10:39 AM

And another thing. Learn the rules of the water. If you have your motor in the water, and sails down, YOU ARE CONSIDERED A MOTOR BOAT. MEANING I HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY AT TIMES. Impossible to count the amount of times I took the right away and had them later come over to the dock *****ing and yelling about how I need to move for them.

I HATE BLO-BOTERS!!!!!!!
BLO-BOTES MAKE GREAT REEFS

I boated all my life, and have worked for West Marine for several years in the early 90's, and at several marina's and have found the following results:
1.) Blo-boters smell. Have you ever had to stand around one that has been on his boat for 3 straight weeks. OVER-RIPE!
2.) Canadian blo-boters smell worse. Dunno why.
3.) There a bunch of pansy-ass's. period.
4.) 45 minutes after the gas dock closes at night, they want gas to get back across the lake because the wind died out and it is getting dark.
5.) F'n lousy tippers after you start the pumps back on to give them gas to get back across the lake, and they give you 2 bucks.
6.) Self-centered A-holes who think that bridges should open for "them".
7.) "Vegetarian, and Organically grown come to mind".
8.) The trailerable blo-jobers oops,,, I mean boters take forever at the ramp! Crap, I used to be able to have my boat on the trailer and pulling out in 15 seconds. Blo-boter next to me: 30 minutes and he stops at the top of the ramp to be sure to not let anyone use that ramp as he lowers his boom, or whatever the "F" they call it.
9.) Did I mention they smell?
10.) Seattle Seafair 2001 people are throwing water balloons back and forth between boats.Tons of fun! A-hole in a blo-bote decides to throw ice and gets his ass kicked.
11.) They drive Subaru's. (I can start a whole new thread on Washington Subaru owners)...
12.) It takes forever to get where you are going. Why? Could you imagine a Poker Run with Blo-botes? It would take a fricken year just to get a hand of cards!
13.) They listen to music like Cat Stevens....
14.) Did I mention, they smell?

LOL Uh, I think you just described Liberal Democrats.

Whiteknuckle 04-09-2004 11:33 AM

Blo-boaters consider themselves purists. They just happen to like diffenent stuff than I do. They will tell you they like the sound of water lapping against the hull, the wind whistling through the sails, the gentle clang of the rigging up against the mast. I just happen to like the sound of a BBC with open exhast at 5000 RPM!

GregP 04-09-2004 12:01 PM

We have one of each at the dock. The sailboat is fine and has it's place, as does the go fast. I always wave as I go by and 90% or more wave back. Same for the powerboats (unless they have upholstered decks). Guess I'm just an obviously great person as I don't have any of the trouble that "you" seem to.

Reed Jensen 04-09-2004 12:06 PM

I've been both a blow-boater and a power boater.... I like them both.... and their differences too... sometimes it's nice to plug along at 8 mph and sit back in the cockpit and look at the tell-tales on the sails... and I never had a problem with power boaters wizzing by.... I never gave them the finger because they passed me like I was standing still ( by their perspective I was). But I also like the thunder of a BBC under boost while moving at 90 mph.. I think most of the hatred between the groups is caused by ignorance of a few on both sides.... :)

Panther 04-09-2004 12:09 PM

I hate blowboats.

These guys go to the gas dock and get 2 gallons of deisel fuel. Then they load up on 100 gallons of water. you would think they filled the water tank before leaving the dock, but then they may have to pay for the water if it was at their house.

If they had to pay for wind they wouldn't be boating

Now, I understand they have the right of way when under sail, but why don't they understant that they don't necessarily have the right of way when under power.

Audiofn 04-09-2004 12:15 PM

Never could you take your speed boat, put it on auto pilot and get all kinds of freeky with your women

Sailboats are fine with me and for every "blowboater" that gives me the fingure it is probably because some "stinkpotter" blew by them to close and pissed them off. I have more time on sailboats (no suprise is it :D ) I love going out and racing with a good crew. You would be amazed at how fast 10-12 knots can feel when you have all that stuff to keep track of. Lots going on on a sailboat so yes as some one said it is more of a purist mentality. I rarely get flipped of up in my area and when I do I ussually figure it is because some one buzzed them real close.

Not to be rude, but someone just mentioned ignorance. This is the only way a sail boat can make it's way up wind. They have to zig-zag. It's what they do and the maneuverability (especially in a narrow channel) is limited which is why they have the right of way. It is a lot easier to just turn your wheel than it is for them to tack.

JPD Motorsports 04-09-2004 01:16 PM

Pointerman, no rudness taken. There is this one stretch that is 5-6 boats wide by longboat key area, and they will zig zag from side to full side even when you motion which side you are overtaking on and approaching from, others will just zig zag and leave enough room for most to pass on. It might be easier to turn the wheel, but I also will slow down when passing sail boaters in this area not to rock them that hard as well.

jafo 04-09-2004 01:56 PM

Love 'em! Sailboating women always want to show you their volvo......or is that ..oh nevermind.....

Unfortunately, I have to agree. Some are nice and easy to get along with, others are a royal pain in the ass. They just don't show the same respect for us that we have to show for them We don't do anything to put anyone in any danger and have great repsect for our speed and wakes.
As long as they are on the water enjoying the day like we all enjoy being on the water so be it --- just stay out of my way.

Cash Bar 04-09-2004 04:02 PM

I love when blow-boats are racing:
Announcer; They're off!!
(3 hrs. silence)
Announcer; At the first turn...

Honestly, They make great slalom bouys when your goin' 80+, and if you have #6's or a Cat you can even make sure they get a daily shower.

KH0302 04-09-2004 04:50 PM

I don't care either way, I ignore them. And I think...

*rant* BASS BOATS SUCK!

;)

Reed Jensen 04-10-2004 01:58 AM

Any other opinions?

spitfire1 04-10-2004 08:39 AM

I think Catmando would have made a good sailboater.....for some reason when I think of a blow boater.......Cat comes to mind......hmmm.......

check freak 04-10-2004 10:42 AM

Did I mention they make great lightening rods, during a thunderstorm. I guess this is one positive point.

Reed Jensen 04-11-2004 02:29 AM

Post up folks!... I want to hear your experiences!..... this could be almost as good as the differences between "Two Plankers" and "Knuckledraggers on lunch trays"..............:D To those that don't know.... that's skiers and snowboarders....:p

Reed Jensen 04-11-2004 02:31 AM

Oh.... and for those that don't know.... Skiers are more like powerboaters... and snowboarders like blowboaters.... Damn knuckledraggers zig zag all over the slopes... skiers blast directly down the fall line... :D
