New to OSO, New SB 30Y2K Ordered

Greetings All!
I'm relatively a newbie to OSO, but not to boating!

Just sold my Classic 18 Donzi, ordered a new 30Y2K Superboat from John Coen in NY. Delivery is early June, and I CAN'T WAIT!

Fortunately my buddies have other boats - 26 Thoroughbred (formerly JohnJan's red beast!), a 32 Fountain, 30' Sonic, 33 Donzi Crossbow so I can pimp rides for the next 10 longest weeks of my life!

Need to hear from some SB owners - need to talk trailer specs sometime in next few weeks.

Looking forward to this summer and gettting some help from this forum, been reading it for some time now and really am impressed with the quality of posts!

We boat in SE Texas, Clear Lake area. Being able to enjoy the boat 10 months each year says it all! 200 hours per year between my boats is typical. We'll be looking for nearby events in the months to come, meanwhile, can I get a ride?????

Magicfloat 04-14-2004 04:03 PM

Welcome to the board. You can have fun here while you wait for the boat:)

Ron P 04-14-2004 04:08 PM

Great first post..... Welcome Aboard.

Talk to FastEddy in the racers milling area, he races a Y2K in Factory 1.

krakmeup 04-14-2004 04:43 PM

thanks Magicfloat, RonP - should I copy this post to the Superboats sections also?

hp500efi 04-14-2004 04:48 PM

Welcome :)

What motor in your 30Y2K?

BTW, you can certainly introduce yourself to the 'owners' section. You will probably get more response here but doesnt hurt to post in the owners section.

Yes the Y2k has steps. I raced and crewed for Fast Eddie and I can say that you will be very Happy with your purchase. Aside from that fact that John Cohen is a friend of mine as well. Congratulations and post some pics as you get them.

Fast Eddies Y2K/Speacial Thanks to Sports Probe for this photo.

mirageman 04-14-2004 05:45 PM

Welcome Krak, and good choice!!!! have you chosen power yet? What options did you choose if you mind me asking. I like that boat alot and looking at getting either the Superboat or the Pantera 28.
The number one thing I like about the Superboat is price. Second it is a 32' boat that looks hot!

Dave M 04-14-2004 06:10 PM

Welcome to OSO! Great choice of boat. Let's here the details .... Power, options, etc. Stop by the Superboat area.

Yo Tripps, get over there and take some pics of that thing being built! Oh, I forgot, they don't have cameras on Long Island. :D :D

Thanks Ron for posting that pic, I have been trying to get ahold of Ike to get a 30X20 for my new office. If anyone can forward me a number I would appreciate it. That day was insane. John had me run a 3 Blade against my better Judgement, when the boats took off we could not get on plain, when we got going we were a 1/4 mile behind the last place boat, Randy (Typoon) was clean out of site. We finished 2nd, a hundred yards behind Randy in the biggest water I have ever seen during a race. We caught 10 to 15 feet of air between 1 and 2 on every lap and the boat landed perfectly every time. Thanks again for posting it.

krakmeup 04-15-2004 10:51 AM

Wow - had to shut my PC down for a while and came back to all these great well-wishes, thanks!

I'll try to answer everyone here, starting with the boat details of course!

Got the 496HO, tabs, HD engine mounts, no external steering. No cabin interior, compass, engine cover lift, cockpit cover. John said ~10 weeks so that puts me in NY mid June. I've asked to do graphics very similar (but different) to sb30's scheme - really liked that with the black cowlings and red highlights, bezels.

Trailer - I can get a great aluminum down here near my house for a price that is worth me towing an empty trailer to NY, so I am putting deposit on that tomorrow.

Can anyone tell me a true, wet, rigged weight of the 30? I'm told 4500#, just wondering if that is realistic, as the trailer has a 5800# capacity and I don't want to under-buy.

Now, on to the rest:
Fightclub: HA! I am NOT a newbie to forums, and I know what kind of topics can get things going!! LOL (BTW, you forgot aluminum manifolds in saltwater....:))

Thanks DPTMoto - sounds like I might want to talk with you and Fast edy some more real soon!

Mirageman - PULL THE TRIGGER! Mine is in the mold as of this week!

DaveM, Tripps - thanks! I'll post on the SB area next day or so as well. Yes, can someone go take pictures??? I've asked John C to , but would love to see some at every/any stage!

Fastedy - thanks, and sorry if I stole your avatar - will try to come up with my own in near future! Would love to hear more on the boat from you.

bglz42, bodyshot1, sydwayz, hp500efi,
I may have missed a few, but thanks again for all the response - watch for pictures of the road trip and first splash, only now 9.5 weeks away???? Maybe I should count days.......

mirageman 04-15-2004 11:43 AM

LMAO!!!!!!!

Hey krak, I like you already!
I just need to get some cash saved up for the down and it's on brother!
Wife and I just had a baby so my boat fund has been draining away while she has not been working! The least she could do is cook me a non-burned meal while she's not working!
Oh well!

How was John to work with? Did you set up your financing before you went to talk to him?

Congrats and I expect pics!!!!

Welcome to the board.

Trailer, do your self a favor and OVERSPEC.

That means buy a trailer one size up from what you think you need. Bigger tires, axles, etc.

A SB 30 w/ tabs, etc...5800 lbs sounds too low w/ gas and equipment. Go for at least a 6500 lb trailer.

Good Luck w/ the boat.

Wannabe

TMANN 04-15-2004 01:09 PM

krakmeup,

It’s TMANN I still can’t believe you sold your 18 but if you had to the SuperBoat is the way to go. I love the looks and it seams to perform great per what everyone says. Great purchase!!! Now get it down here so we can see it fly by us....

welcome aboard, Congrats on your new boat sounds nice.

ScottB 04-15-2004 01:50 PM

Welcome and nice choice. Good luck with her

krakmeup 04-15-2004 03:02 PM

Thanks again all -
TMANN - don't even start on me about the Donzi - my eyes get watery, it was a very hard decision, but I simply don't have the room. I will own another Classic one day, no doubt.

Thanks wannabe on the trailer advice, I'm leaning that way as well, but want to find some hard numbers - John says the vessel is 4500 'rigged', so I'm not sure, but I hear ya on the oversizing of tires and hardware.

Miarageman - John is cool once you get him to open up a little, we're having a blast now, and he's been real straightforward; send me PM when you get closer and I'll tell you how I did the financing, it does take a little work but is do-able.

Pictures will begin asap, in the menatime I'll try to pacify myself on our slo-go cruiser (now being well known as the anchor boat !) and bum rides from my buddies.

fastedy 04-15-2004 07:40 PM

4635lbs w/hp500 efi. APBA scale, maybe a little bit of gas. I think I have a 7000lb trailor, does that sound right?

Eddie

krakmeup 04-15-2004 08:50 PM

Awesome, thanks Fastedy - this is exactly the kind of info this forum is so good about. I will firm up the trailer deal tomorrow and put a deposit down, then it's just waitin' time!

Definitely go oversize on the trailer. The ONLY time you will regret not doing it is when your SB30 is lyiong on the interastate because the tires blew out from being overloaded.

The rule I use is to have at least a 10% safety factor from the absolute max weight.

Take the 4635 lbs for the boat, add fuel (@7.5 lbs/gal) plust trailer, gear etc. then add 10% and I think 7000 lbs is a good number.

Over spec your trailer and tow vehicle, you will never be sorry.

Wannabe

krakmeup 04-21-2004 04:17 PM

Wannabe - You mean 7000 GVW or 7000 Carrying capacity?

Hi-Tech Marine 04-21-2004 06:02 PM

1 Attachment(s)
Krakmeup. I agree with post above. Where ever you end up getting a trailer get it oversized.

for example, We have been putting the tri-axle under that boat using a 7 1/2" beam. Bunk mounting is the same mounts used on the 38-40 so its overdesigned with sling strap set up. This way you can tow as fast as you want/ ramp or crane load/unload and not worry about salt water corrosion.

The 7K is the GVWR of the trailer reference above and may be pushing it with extended towing, full of fuel and everything else you add to the boat. Typical beam size is 5" or 5 1/2" which is small for that length.

This is the 7 1/2" beam tri-axle. With the light tire loading, Jack-knife turns are not a problem.
