Default What Is My Boat Worth?

I've been trying (without much luck I might add) to sell my 2000 Checkmate 259 Convincer. I bought the boat new in 2001 (as a leftover with no motor)and had a Flagship HP500 (www.flagshipengine.com) installed in it. They are the only motor and drive that have ever been in the boat. The boat has around 150 hours and is well equipped with Corsa selectable exhaust, aluminum swim platform, hydraulic-assist steering, etc. in it and has a trailer. The boat is in excellent condition. Looking around the internet there seems to be a huge variation in Checkmate pricing. I had it listed for one price last year without any luck and I was told by a marina that I should ask around $58,000. This is fairly close to what similar year/power combinations seem to be listed at. There are however, several 1998 models with smaller engines listed for way below this in the $30,000 range. What can I reasonably expect to get for this thing? I'd appreciate any input!

I sold my 1993 in 1999 for 32K with a stock mag in it. You can never get the money out of motors if you can buy one with stock power for 30ish you better get your price close or pull the power and sell it with a stock 496. I'll bet you can find someone that will swap you for a 496 plus some cash.... my.02

I think $47-51k would be a good selling price if in good condition

Thanks for the replies. I was wondering if the engine was what was killing the value because it wasn't Merc.

There are a lot of good deals out there to be had. Just an example, a local guy has a 2001 280 PQ loaded with a new, 1hr, 502mpi and new drive for sale for 57k. He has it priced to move and the boat is loaded with sink, microwave and fridge and overall is perfect.

If you want it to sell, then price it accordingly. I do think the non merc engine pkg will decrease value quite a bit.

You asked so I'll take a stab at it.

In 2001 I ordered a new Checkmate 270 BR with an XZ drive and hp500 efi (the same hull as your 259). After all the covers and such I had around $78K in the boat and trailer.

In the middle of the 2002 season I bought a 35 Fountain so I started trying to unload the Checkmate.

I started out around 58K in July and got ZERO interest!!!

Dropped it to 55K in August and got ZERO interest!!!

Finally dropped it to 53K in September and got about 3 lookers.

Sold it for 52K in October to one of them and was very very very happy to do so. And this was just a one year old fresh water boat in MINT condition with just 70 hours on a Merc hp 500 efi. Not to mention that the Mid Cabin option cost more than the deck version on the 270/259.

Ok so now lets consider your boat. It's a 2000 model which makes it 3 years older at the time of sale and it has 150 hours on it vs 70.

So considering those factors, "if" your boat had a Merc HP 500 efi and XZ outdrive i'd say that it was worth around 45K. However, your boat does not have Merc power.

Not having Merc power is like the cardinal sin of boat marketing. Many buyers, including myself, just will not go anywhere near a boat that is powered with anything other than a Merc. Not to knock your engine builder but you just have no idea what you are getting when you buy something other than Merc, and that just kills the resale value of your boat. I'd say deduct another $8000 for not having a Merc HP 500, and another $1000 for it being carbed and not efi.

Basically, I'd say you should advertise it for around $38,000 and be happy to get $36,000 out of it. It's a tough market out there and with it being non-Merc power it's going to be a tough sell anywhere near $40,000.

In fact, you might be better off taking dyno's advice and pull your moter, get what you can out of it and go buy a brand new take-out 496 Mag so you can offer it with Merc power and the new engine warranty in the mid to high $40's. Either way, best of luck to you.

My 97 253 sold about 2 months ago for 33k. Very Clean with 290 hours. Mine had a custom built 560+ hp blower motor (small 174 B&M). Most people i talked to very afraid of a charger, so i lost half the inquiries.

The high book on the boat was 33k, so i dropped the price to that number and it sold. i was asking 36k.\

What is the book on the 2000 model ?
