BEST CAT from 30 to 35

I am looking for a new boat and would like to go with a cat. It can have either outboards or inboards. Must have a cabin of some sort. Would like to stay in the 30 to 35 foot range. What would you all recomend. would like to see mid 90's. Would like to consider them all even the ones that are small companies.

Thanks
Don

Ive been looking at cats as well. The tops in quality are with out a doubt Skater. Also check out the AMT. As for the cabin, well thats a problem, 90's however is not.

Re: BEST CAT from 30 to 35

The best CAT I have seen in that size range with a decent cabin is definitely eliminator. I would love to have a Skater but there are some major funds needed for a Skater with a cabin. I looked at a 30' eliminator last year that had a suprisingly nice cabin for a 30' CAT.

All I had to do was get a few insurance quotes and the idea of owning a CAT faded away quickly

When buying a cat you REALLY need to look closely and RIDE in them as well. I would look at only a few manufacturers because there are only a few that really build cats that can handle the bumpy stuff. They are and in no particular order:

Skater
Nor-Tech
Spectre
AMT

Good luck!

Shane summed it up pretty well. However, Skater Spectre and AMT build what I believe you are looking for.

All three are very similar boats built to the highest quality.

Realistic everyday speeds with these three boats will be between 105-115 mph with 300x's. I encourage you to make calls to the owners of these company's and discuss the characteristics of each boat.

I personally just finished building a 30 Spectre and am having a fantastic time dialing it in. Just a whole lot of fun to drive.

Call me with any questions

I would STAY AWAY from trips on cats. The center motor gets POUNDED! When going that big go inboards. Keep us posted. BTW, BEAUTIFUL Sprectre MAXIMUS!

A bit longer than 35'....but the Hustler 377 Talon is interesting.
"Cabin" is a bit small....but hey, it's unique.

Cabins of any appreciable size, configuration or utility are tough to find if not impossible. The cabins that are available or more like glorified storage than anything else. Some do have some small features, but if you are buying a cat and cabin utility is of paramount importance to you, you may want to reconsider.

Re: BEST CAT from 30 to 35

Hey Guys-

Thanks for all the input. The reason I need a cabin is that most of my boating is done on the St. Croix/Mississppi rivers and we spend the night out on the water. I have a 1991 311 sr1 formula right now and love the boat but always looking to go faster. so I am looking for some thing that will work for all. I can have fun with it, sleep over in and will run 90 plus. I know most cats don't have a cabin, what about American Offshore. The 3100 has a cabin, what do you guys think about this boat? Does it handle well, top speeds?, what is the cabin like? any information would be great.
Thanks Alot
Don

That pretty well hits the nail on the head. If I were to buy a CAT I would have already made the decision that a cabin wasn't necassary. With that being said....I'd buy a Skater!

Re: BEST CAT from 30 to 35

Let's do a little more qualifying......What price range are you thinking? This should help narrow the field down

Oh, and for the size cat you are talking about be prepared for insurance from 2-8k depending on power/size/speed

Re: BEST CAT from 30 to 35

What I would like would be a used or new cat from 31 to 35 with a pair of outbaords if possible (2.5 or 3.0). I would like to keep the cost under a 100k. I have seen many in the price range but have yet to check on insurance. I suppose being 23 years old they will hammer me on the insurance!!

Dont Even Think About Triples!!!! It Will Be Almost Impossible TO INSURE Unless Your Wallet Is As Deep As The Ocean.

Re: BEST CAT from 30 to 35

30 Motion
28 Skater (not exactly 31 but a must to consider)
30 Spectre
These are the boats I would consider if thinking about Outboards. All true tunnels and w/twins they should all run over 105 every day. If you are looking for a cabin in a cat in that price range you have Eliminator, HTM (they make a 30), Magic, American offshore/Awesome. I know there are some I am forgetting but these are some of the more popular boats in this class. I am 23 too, I think you may have a hard time getting insurance on these boats.

dreamboater 05-17-2004 08:28 PM

Re: BEST CAT from 30 to 35

Although Skater does make a 32 w/outboards I think most of these are over the 100k price range.

i rode in a 28 eliminator with twin OB'S at the maimi show. it was awesome. i havnt seen one of their 33's with OB's but im sure its possible. their cabin is really nice also. also a bit less expensive then a skater, but a great boat, top quality.

Id like to 2nd or 3rd the insurance issue. cat owners are getting hosed. But they are fast, so its worth it.

With Blackadar going out of the high performance insurance biz, I think it might get really hard to get cat insurance at a reasonable cost.............and you can forget a cat with trips.

Warlock makes or made a 31' cat with stand-up bolsters and a HUGE cabin. It has a raised deck and the cabin is extremely commodious. They do not have an innerliner and look a little cheasy on the inside. I have not seen one with outboards and am not sure of their speed.

The Warlock Cat that Richard Granville raced may have been the single ugliest boat ever produced.

It was commodiously unpleasant to the eyes.

Wouldn't that be "It was incommodiously pleasant to the eyes". Man the education system in Jersey back in the 1920's was pretty lame to produce such a plethora of grammatical inconsistencies.

If you are looking for new, definately take a look at the HTM 30 footer. Very fast, high freeboard(rough water) and spacious cabin. They have their own motor program and this boat will be much cheaper than the Skater or Spectre. I was out to Havasu April 16th from New York state and saw a new one on the trailer...it was absolutley beautiful!

It would be cool to have a cat of that size on the river. We boat out of Great River Harbor near Alma, Wi(pool 5). Do you ever venture down that far? If so look us up.
