Re: Blades on propellors

I just received a new pair of stock Bravos to replace my labbed ones. I want that 5 mph of cruise speed back. With these gas prices, I could care less about one or two mph at WOT!

Re: Blades on propellors

I have a 26' Nova ST (28' LOA) with Mercury 350 Magnums. I like the Turbo Hydromotive "Bravo" props on my Alpha drives as they have a wider diameter and more blade surface area and go with a 21 Pitch for power coming out and a nice cruise. These props a quite cupped and dig in nicely. A 23 pitch would buy me only 2 mph more and then the hole shot suffers and more wear on the drives. I tried a 4-blade and liked the 3-blade for my application better. I see more and more big blocks going to 4 blades. I was going to go bigger this year but this thing is so efficient on gas and in such good shape I am hanging onto it. If I remember correctly 3000 RPM is right before the secondaries open up and cruise is around 48 mph. It's not the fastest ride but soild and cheap to keep till retirement and a Top Gun.

It is curious to see that 29.33% are running something other than Bravo I drives. It would be interesting to see a breakdown.

Thank you for the poll Reed!

Run a 4 blade now, but interested in trying a 3 blade "Accelerator" to compare. I have a Mirage Plus that is a spare that I might convert.

Re: Blades on propellors

to keep with the topic we run 4,5,and 6 blades on our svl . race boat.
the 6 blades out accelerate everything else in our testing . but we have found that this changes with the prop height ( X - dimension) on a pleasure boat with a deep X the less blades that you can still get on plane will normally be faster however if you start lifting the drive height the slippage will go through the roof so if you add blades you can go higher and the net result is a gain ( you seem to gain more from lifting the drive to reduce drag than you lose from increased slippage and as I said the 5 and 6 blades take care o;f that)

I can't imaging running 3 blades on anything anymore. I remember when everyone was skeptical about going to 4 blades, now 4 blades are so common and even 5 blades are making a big push. I just made the switch last year to 5 blades, not sure if I'm ready for sixers anytime soon... :D
