Were you born before 1985?
According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were
kids in the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's or even the early 80's, probably shouldn't have survived. Our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paint. We had no childproof lids or locks on medicine bottles, doors, or cabinets, and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets. Not to mention the risks we took hitchhiking. As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags. Riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm day was always a special treat. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. Horrors! We ate cupcakes, bread and butter, and drank soda pop with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this. We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then rode down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the street lights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. No cell phones. Unthinkable! We did not have Playstations, Nintendo 64, X-Boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, video tape movies, surround sound, personal cell phones, personal computers, or Internet chat rooms. We had friends! We went outside and found them. We played dodge ball, and sometimes, the ball would really hurt. We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones and teeth, and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. They were accidents. No one was to blame but us. Remember accidents? We had fights and punched each other and got black and blue and learned to get over it. We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out any eyes. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's home and knocked on the door, or rang the bell or just walked in and talked to them. Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Some students weren't as smart as others, so they failed a grade and were held back to repeat the same grade. Horrors! Tests were not adjusted for any reason. Our actions were our own. Consequences were expected. The idea of parents bailing us out if we got in trouble in school or broke a law was unheard of. They actually sided with the school or the law. Imagine that! This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers, and inventors, ever. We had freedom, failure, success, and responsibility --- and we learned how to deal with it. And you're one of them! Congratulations. |

My mom used to drop me off at the harbor. Used to fish all day. no such things as child molestors. People could actually be trusted. No such thing as DWI's. At the most the cop's would make us pour the beer out on the side of the road.

Anybody ever play with mercury? It was the greatest thing in the world. I could roll those little silver balls around for hours. Today they would clear out a city block.

Re: Were you born before 1985?
Seat belts??? My dad cut them out of the old family station wagon. :eureka:
And my wife's family of 6 would go to the jersey shore in the '77 Vette ( my wife on her mothers lap and her brother and two sisters squished in the back) :D AHH the good old days! |

kids today spend way to much time indoors. we used to leave in the morning with a p & j sandwich in our back pockets , play in th woods all day catching frogs , snapping turtles , building forts , playing war , dirt clog fights (someone always got hurt) but we had a blast. come home for dinner and back out to play hide and seek or anything but STAY INSIDE  its no wonder kids today are overweigh. |
Re: Were you born before 1985?
Great topic!!
Yeah, Im not too old I hope. 1966. Used to get on my bike (Schwinn Stingray) after school or on the weekend and when the 6 o'clock fire whistle rang, I had to be home for dinner. Now, kids aren't allowed to leave the distance of two houses, and with a helmet?? |

I remember that. However times are changing. And we are closer to finding a cure for cancer then ever. AIDS... now we can help the unborn.
I cherish crashing the bike playing chicken with my brother. Or tying a sting to the back of Clydes ice-cream truck while on a Vision skateboard. How about the time when fireworks were entertaining during the summer? I remember my brother and I swashing June bugs. Hide and go seek with all the neighborhood kids. :) Those times our great and kid these day will have different memories of fun times. Just like our parents. Gee, when you think about it. We sound just like them. At least we had electricity and indoor plumbing. Me, my dad, my bother. |

Re: Were you born before 1985?
1964 for me. Grew up playing on the banks of a river that wound through a very old city. Not exactly the cleanest place to grow up. No video games, No 360 channels of nothing on. We built forts and rode bicycles, not mountain bikes. We knew when to
be home,(most times). A garage full of all kinds of junk was a kids paradise. Going to a place like Mcdonalds back then was an event, not a supper. Anyone remember Bosco? We made our own fun. If you wanted to build a go-cart, you had to build two of them, just so you could race your buddy down a hill.As someone said above, brakes never seemed to be an available option on those early model carts. At the end of our street, was a dirt lot where a burned down apt building used to be. The place would fill in with water after a heavy rain, and it was full of bricks scattered around. We would dare each other to ride through the water on our bikes as fast as we could, waiting to see if one of us would hit an underwater brick with our front tire, guaranteeing a good laugh for the ones watching. Oh yeah, one more thing, we all knew better than to disrespect the police, and knew when to shut-up. |

Re: Were you born before 1985?
My friend and I used to ride our bikes to Lake Michigan which was about 7 miles away and hang out at the beach all day, and we were only 13. Never thought about anyone hurting ya or snatching ya. That was also when the beach used to be always clean and not "fishy" smelling.
The only time I remember being inside was watching the black and white tv only when it was after dark, Mom used to ring the cow bell, we could hear it for blocks, if we did not come running our "ass was grass" |
Re: Were you born before 1985?

Even though I got paddled in grade school, now that I have a 2 yr old daughter, I have to admit, AT THIS POINT my attitude is don't dare touch her. You tell me and I'll take care of it. I would think that's every dads attitude about his little girl though. DAVE |

I’m a ’66 model.
Bicycle demolition derby. BB gun shoot outs. Dodge ball. Mini bikes without helmets. How did we survive our youth? |

Re: Were you born before 1985?
'64 here...NEVER INSIDE is right! My aunt Dorothy (who's 95 next month and still drives) had a FWD 455 Toronado with belted tires, she would let me take it up and down her road for mowing her lawn when I was like 13...man would that thing create clouds of tire smoke or what? :D Let's not forget that the majority demagraphic in this thread got to "partake" in that decade of decadence...the 80's, when you could create a party anywhere anytime. I'm 40 in Aug. My only son graduated high school last night, being there really brought some things home about time...childhood times...the good times...and where has time gone?

Re: Were you born before 1985?

Re: Were you born before 1985?
Snow ball fights at school that didn't get you suspended :)
Riding our bikes down the local ski hill without helmets or " suspension". Crazy Carpets on same ski hill :) Building forts in the forest. Riding the subway at 8 without fear of abduction. Being really scared of the coppers catching you doing anything and even more scared of mom or dad catching you. Spending every waking moment outdoors, summer or winter ( until the street lights came on ) and making fun, not expecting the parents to buy it for us. Dirt bomb fights that really hurt when you got caught with the ones that had stones in them. BB gun wars....ahhh an old favorite of mine. Sneaking beers at 14, not extacy and date rape drugs. Being told that it was "your responsibility" to mow the lawn and take out the garbage if an allowance was expected. Catching hell when the school phoned home for not good reasons :) Yes sir, the world sure has changed since I was a little kid. Turned 40 this year and had to go to my 6 yr old daughters school because she got caught "making", not actually throwing a snow ball on school grounds. No wonder all the surveys say the kids of today are fat, lazy, illiterate etc.etc. |
Re: Were you born before 1985?
Amen, I love technology, but put down the cheescake and walk away from the computer and do a push up or something. Obesity is not a disease its laziness, and thats why America gets fatter every year, and why there are less good looking women to take out on the boat!!! :stupid: :stupid:
