What the hell is a manatee?
I hear everyone ***** about them, but I don't think I have ever seen one. Are they only on the east coast?
|
Re: What the hell is a manatee?
Do a Google search and you can probably find a pic of these beautiful and majestic creatures. I have been thinking of how to domesticate them. Maybe I could teach them tricks, like "fetch" (no, not the boat prop :D ). Maybe they would make good retrievers for hunting. Boy! Wouldn't the guys in the duck club be impressed!
Anyway, they are in Lake Ponchartrain now. If the coonasses don't find a good recipe for them soon, they'll be in Galveston Bay, so keep a look out. (Of course they will die immediately from the toxic waste dumped in it, but hey... ) |

They are actually the closest relative of the elephant. They are cute but pesky in that they seem to have a tendency to-wards clogging marinas and harbors. You can't help but run em over because they move slow as elephants. new website http://www.saveoursanity.com Some folks need a cause. This one is crazy. It's like save the fruit flies society. |
Re: What the hell is a manatee?
They are floating pieces of crap that can swim..... :D:D
They are so dumb that they will eat things that will kill them and swim were they can get run over. DARWIN comes to mind... Jon |
Re: What the hell is a manatee?
I have nothing against Manatees, I'm all for saving them. It's just that these laws aren't being put into place to save the manatees. They are being brought about because the people that own these mansions on the water don't want boats running by them. I have seen lots and lots of manatees in my 33 years on Tampa Bay, and I have never once seen them out in open water. They tend to be in the grassy areas, and canals. The only place that they may be in trouble is in narrow channels that are the only water passage in the area. I have no problem slowing down in these areas, it's common sense to anyway.

Re: What the hell is a manatee?
Your anger is misplaced. I've never heard of a manatee lobbying for more idle zones.

Re: What the hell is a manatee?
well said Cuda.

Re: What the hell is a manatee?
They're really a very cool animal. They just kinda bump around minding their own business. Real slow-moving, munchin on whatever, no harm to nobody.
Cuda is right - it's not their fault. They could give a sh!t. It's the over-zealous tree-hugger types that give em a bad name. Don't hate em, they're just a pawn in a much bigger game. |
Re: What the hell is a manatee?
I like the bumper stickers in the Pacific North West.... they say... "Save a tree... wipe your ass with a Spotted owl."...:D

Re: What the hell is a manatee?
Another manatee named New Bay also lost her radio tag and belt and was last sighted on June 1 in Hernando County in Florida, near Pine Island. New Bay has the marking “W 8” markings on her back. If you see a manatee with this marking, please call 1-888-404-FWCC (3922
Hot off the press!!!!! Thanks for filling me in on the manatees, the water in TX isn't clear enough to even have a clue whats in it. |

Re: What the hell is a manatee?
Manatees are just another excuse for enviro-whackos to collect a paycheck. They are worthless, helpless creatures that pose a threat to boaters. They destroy nearly a 1000 pounds of seagrass a day. And of course, what goes in, must come out...they create 1000 pounds of pollution per day. They eliminate habitat for other marine life.

Re: What the hell is a manatee?
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe there not even a native species.

Re: What the hell is a manatee?
There is no Florida or American Manatee..They came up from the Caribbean

Animal minds do not develope like humans. That doesn't make them dumb. They lack the capacity in which God gave them. They were around long before Humans. It saddens me to hear people say such things. I'm not self righteous. It sucks when people can be so careless and thoughtless. They can't help it. Us the pieces of crap can because we have the capacity. |

Manatee :blaster: They are on the pages of PowerBoat Mag,
Wasabe, while I respect your opinion, I wonder if you would feel the same way if they closed down most of the water areas around the OC to powerboats because of manatees invading where you live??? WILL :eureka: |

The problem is some people like these things.

Re: What the hell is a manatee?

The problem to boaters is that manatees are attracted to the sounds of props and engine noises generated by boats. They swim toward your props almost instinctively. So laws to forces boaters to idle down coastline channels attracts these things in greater numbers. Why don't people get bent out of shape if a car hits a deer or runs over a possum? These things aren't meant to be in US waters anyways. Get some fishing boats to capture them and haul them back to the equator regions. |

:drink: :drink: Popcorn? Beer?? chomp!! chomp!!Munch Munch

Re: What the hell is a manatee?
They are not native to this area. There are more now than their ever were, yet they are endangered. They travel through the deeper areas near the bottom, yet we have shallow areas that are idle only and deeper channels that we can cruise in.
The FWC refused to put out signs in the river hear for the holiday weekend so the envirofreaks were passing out signs to hold up to the boaters. I planned to hold up my sign in return until the county caved in to the wackos and decided to foot the bill for the signs. I'm curious to see who is out there to enforce it as the FWC said it was unenforcable. |

WILL :eureka: I'm so lame that I feel sick if I see a plant dying. Especially if it's on someone's yard. I feel that owning a plant is like owning a pet. "You are all that it has." It's depending on you to help it grow. I'm not a gung ho tree hugger like Leonardo DiCaprio however I try to do my part. I'm not scolding anyone. I just think it's sad. It makes me feel bad. It makes me sigh. That's all. |

Re: What the hell is a manatee?
There already is something....and every power boat has one......the sound of a high speed prop.
Scientists claim the manatees can't hear, or ignor, the sound of a slow turning prop. But the high frequency sound of a prop turning fast scares them away. |

What you do not seem to grasp hear is that you will sell your boat and do a lot of house chores as they do not put these manatee zones up one day and take them away the next. They are there all the time, and they make no sence at all. You mentioned the Circle of life. Well maybe Gods master plan what that these things be gone a LONG time ago. Now us screwing with them to keep them around is going to kill off a lot of other things. Jon |

Re: What the hell is a manatee?
That's a very good article and it says what we've been trying to say all along.
Fast boats are not the problem! I've been told that by the FWC that most deaths are related to trauma from a blunt impact strike. If they can't hear a slow boat approach imagine how lethal the keel of sail boat would be at 10 mph! I think the answer is not maximum speed enforcement but minimum speeds. Who's with me?? TS TS |
