Fuel Milage on GMC Trucks?

Looking to get a new or used truck GMC 3500 4x4 crew dually.
What are you guys getting for gas mileage with the 6.0, 8.1, and the diesel, also what about in a older 96-00 with the 7.4 all with auto transmission. All the info you can give would be great i'm really undecided on this. I don't particularly want a diesel, but I also don't wan't to be driving around in something that gets 6 miles a gallon.

Thank You, Kirk

I have a 2000 Classic 2500 4wd with a 454/Auto. It isn't a dually and I pull down 11-12 mpg around town, 14-15 on the open road and 9.5 mpg towing anything with the A/C on. Hope this helps! Consider a couple of miles with the dually and the gear difference. :)

I had a 1999 Chevy 454 crewcab dually......got 10mpg around town......12 on the highway......and 8mpg towing.....that thing about sucked me dry! :D but it was the best handling truck ive had! Couldnt even tell there was a 30' scarab behind me...pulled strong and liked to run at about 72mph.....even had it up as high as 90 chasing a hot chick once! :D :D

Diesel, diesel, diesel....

One more thing.

Go diesel.

I have a 2500 Avalanche with the 8.1L. Gas mileage = I wish I had a diesel.

I love the truck, and got a steal on it, which helps offset the price of gas and frequency of fill ups. Towing 12K lbs, I think I am getting 6 mpg.

I'm driving a Duramax diesel dually and I got 10.0 towing the Black Thunder back and forth to Smoke. Thats at 65 -70 mph on the freeway. 16-18 normal driving unloaded. Resale makes up for the initial purchase price. I highly recommend one.

2003 Duramax 2500 Crew Cab around 20 not towing, towing depends on what and how fast but it is much better than the last gas truck!

03 GMC,SWB,CC 4X4. I run the Edge + Attitude, 5" exhaust. 8" Fab-Tech, 37" tires. Running in level 3 will net me approx. 16-17mpg at 70mph. 80mph and it drops to approx 15mpg. Pulling a 30' Eliminator at 75mph will net around 9-10mpg. Sam

I have an 04 Chevy Dually Crew Cab with the 8.1. only have 400 miles on it, but I get 10 wether towing or not is seems. I only tow a 24 ft Checkmate and have not had it on the highway yet, only around town. The 8.1 is the best gasser I have ever had, Incredible torque! I wanted a white Crew cab, and my dealer said a white crew cab deisel was impossible to get. I did not but a dually with a big block for good gas mileage though. Most solid truck I have ever had, traded an 01 GMC HD 2500 in on it with the 6.0 and while i had the 6.0, I was very impressed with it performance, but now that I have the 8.1 w/ Allison, I will never go back. The 6.0 got 12-13 mpg empty and 11 towing.

Re: Fuel Milage on GMC Trucks?

I've got a 2000 3/4 ton suburban with 6.0 engine and 4.10 rear.
Best non-towing was 12-13 mpg
Towing my Formula 303= <8mpg.
You never said what you're towing?
If it's over 6000 lbs. go for the diesel, if under I would just get a 1/2 ton with the 5.3 engine. I heard they get around 20-22 mpg highway. That was from a friend with his tahoe 5.3
Bottom line is for heavy towing, the duramax/alison combo works the best.
And diesel is about .35 cheaper than gas now.

03 gmc dually diesal allison auto tow 40 hustler on steel trailer from FL to TX averaged 13mpg, empty can run 18-20mpg depends on my foot. 1993 chevy extended cab dually 454 auto with overdrive 6mpg not loaded or not from FL to TX go diesel if all possible, there are lots of rebates and dont be afraid to look in TX thats where I bought mine when I lived in FL and saved a few grand more.

Re: Fuel Milage on GMC Trucks?

Duramax with Allison is definitely the way to go, no doubt worth every penny in the long run. Buy it right now, GM is giving them away through August 2nd to make room for the 2005 models. Look at GM website for regional promo's like the $4k Loyalty Bonus, $1k off on Dura/Ally combo, $1k +/- on Power Pack options, Low Financing, etc. And don't pay a dime over invoice, work them down from invoice, they're picking up nearly $2k on the holdback. And if you have a GM Credit Card Rebate, you could easily take $10k off the sticker before working on trade or down payment figure.

21MPG highway and 16 city is not uncommon with a light foot, and diesel fuel is running about $1.70 or less. Check out http://dieselplace.com/forum/ which is kind of like an "OSO" for Duramax owners.

Not sure why you would not want a diesel, the Duramax LLY is simply incredible and perfect for what you want a truck for. Don't rule it out, test drive a 2500HD or 3500 Silverado, you'll be hooked in the first couple miles.

Keith , Are you a Salesman? Hell, i work at a GMC dealership and I'd probably buy a truck from you instead.

Re: Fuel Milage on GMC Trucks?

LOL!!! As a matter of fact, yes. :D Maybe you can help me with the Silverado "under-back-seat storage box" option GM parts has on their website? $368 is about twice the value, should be more like $170. hahaha Don't make me to run over to Walmart and buy some storage bins and do it myself, that would look cheesy!!!

I have a 04 6.0 crew cab 2500hd with 4.10 gears. I get a hair over 14 everyday normal dirving. Between 10 and 12 when towing depending on how fast I tow.

Re: Fuel Milage on GMC Trucks?

KN, something I forgot, when I was looking into the Duramax, I found that diesel is hard to find in my area and is only .10 cents cheaper. Also, in my area, they are hard to re-sell because buyers assume they are driven hard. Now... I know this is not true in every part of the country, but something to look into.
