1970's 36 Foot Cigarette

I looking at a mid 70's 36 foot cigarette project boat. Is there major issues I should consider before I take on a project of this vintage. I am concerned with things other than the basics such as water damage. Did the hull have weaknesses etc. Thanks Rick G.

Re: 1970's 36 Foot Cigarette

I just bought a 1976 Cig 28SS. It's built so damn heavy that I can't imagine anything on the boat being weak. If the one you're looking at is built like this one I hope you have a strong tow rig...

Re: 1970's 36 Foot Cigarette

McManus was at Cigarette around 1977 to 1984. One of his traits is building durable, heavy hulls that last over 25 years. Thats why the boats are still around 30 years later. Maybe you should email him a photo if you have one.

I have a one built in 1972, check this out

http://www.go-fast.com/bam,_the_project.htm

Built like a tank, minor cracked bulkheads and ribs over the years. Is it staggered or side by side? Will take a lot of power to see any real speed.

As with any boat that old, check the trasom for rot.

Rick, which boat are you looking at? Is it local? hows about some pics. Does it perchance have a large cat painted on the deck?

Have you looked at this one yet? I believe it needs one, if not, two engine rebuilds and some enterior work.

Rebar,

Is this the one that has been around the lake forever and is really cammed
up and loud? If it is, I sure did not realize it was so rough in it's present condition. It does need a good owner then.

Also, is the diesel Cig that was owned by the same person up for sale? I think it had 3208 cats with TR drives...??? If I remember, it is kind of a
dog but looks good and rides good.

OR

Sounds like one we checked out around that time in Lauderdale Had Staggered 454's and mercury race pipes on it.

Re: 1970's 36 Foot Cigarette

I have the same boat here in southern California, a 36' built in early 1978.

Keep in mind that in addition to the ultra-sturdy construction (estimated weight 12000 pounds) the beam is 9'3" so with TRS drives and 1200hp I have only seen a best of 65 mph on gps. To its credit, despite it being 26 years old it is still rock solid and the design handles big water with ease.

So, unless you want it as a sort of classic, used exclusively as a lake boat I'd imagine it could leave you wanting more speed and less bulk.

I believe the 40' Super Hawaii is a stretched version of that hull. Buzzi basicly did what MBam is doing then added a swimplatform.

Nice job Marc, any current pics?

I hate to admit this, but I have not touched it in almost 2 years, life got in the way. Built a pool, been remodeling the house, moved the business. Starting to think about it again.

Watch your mouth Steve, I'm not impressed with that type of nonsense.
And yes I have been in a 36 Cigarette, and no I have not been in Thad's. Nor has anyone else.

The old resin buckets are still running. Thad's unbuildable boat is nothing more than a 3 million dollar illusion.
Sunday is supposed to be nice, I guess I'll crank start the old klunker and go for a spin.

Angry words because you piloted Thad aground won't improve you in any respect.
The 36 Cigarette always was and still is a fine offshore powerboat.

Yeah your right, you built Thad a great boat. It made Cigarette, Outerlimits and all the other major powerboat manufacturers jealous. His product is in all the magazines ...test results are fantastic. Sales couldn't be better. It's hard to argue with success like that.
Stop the delusion, wear the proper gear when you are working on the fiberglass, your brain is eroding.

I wonder if OSO can some how add a hijacking button. Sort of like a reinforced cabin door. Something we can hit everytime a thread is about to be hijacked.
