Well, they're not going to reach that level on ebay either. I asked about the boat, but have yet to hear from them.

Would redoing a transom actually cost $11,500??

Re: Here's a project Cafe Racer w/trailer for project seekers.

Good chance the stringers are bad as well if the transom is. Then the question is how far does the rot go? Does it extend in the stringers past the engine compartment to under the floor? That would be a pricey repair, being a liner boat and having to cut up the floor to get to the stringers. No way you could give a fair price without having it checked out.

i looked at the boat at t-n-t in 02, it needed work. wouldn't take my offer either.

Here's their reply...

The reserve is $20,000. I had a survey done and found the transom and stringers were rotted and need to be replaced. Thanks-Jay

for 20,000, they will sit on it another 10 yrs. maybe they will smarten up this go around. for 12-15 they will get rid of that soon. im sure the're a few people that would love to do up that boat. dave

Re: Here's a project Cafe Racer w/trailer for project seekers.

I'd take it on for 10k. It's too much work/time/risk for 20k. I wouldn't get my effort back out of it.

I think remember this boat being marketed locally few years back up here in NH, its been for sale a looong time. Its gonna take the jaws of life to get it off the trailer.

Any ideas on how a boat like this gets to be in this condition?
Did someone leave a drain plug in over the winter? Seems like a damn shame, even if it has been a long time.

Hey Jayboat, Nice ship as your avatar. Is it really yours, or are you buying her next year?

Re: Here's a project Cafe Racer w/trailer for project seekers.

Usually rot happens from the wood in the stringer, transom, floor not being properly sealed within fiberglass at the factory. There is a void where water can enter and then the wood acts like a sponge. A lot of rotton floors happen from the manufacturer only covering the top with glass, but leaving the bottom exposed. So, its usually a quality lapse, tho it could be caused by someone drilling holes for an install in the transom and not properly sealing the holes once finished.
Bottom line is there is no perfect boat, all manufacturers have or will have some problem.....even Cig.

crack in the transon, around the gimbles, where ever air goes, water goes.

Too Old,
I don't remember ever showing you that boat. I do remember you looking at the 35 cigarette from the Bahamas with #3 drives. Are ya sure I said ridiculous offer? I don't get to make the final price call on a brokerage boat, the owner does. I'll take all the offers I can get. I can't tell you that I have not gotten some offers I have considered ridiculous. They are usually the ones that are 1/2 of what I would consider such a value that I couldn't pass up purchasing the boat for myself.

Waterbrain, I wish! I dont think there's room in the hold for an Outerlimits, though, which would make a most excellent runabout for a vessel like this. :D It's the Lady Lola, I snagged a few pix of her last year from http://www.superyachtsociety.com/.
I think they've now got the new year's design nominees up.
Lots of nice dreams there.
Here are a couple more of Lola...

While I'm at it (gotta get that post count up...), here's one of my favorites: Magpie. Man I love the look of stainless on wood...

Re: Here's a project Cafe Racer w/trailer for project seekers.

tnt-what are you thinking this boat would take to get it back on the water? The way the ad reads, it sounds like it's more than just the transom. I e-mailed the guy and it's really a transom/stringer issue. So that proably includes the core too. The interior is ripped, so that's about to go. And we still havn't talked about the engines/drives, etc...

Re: Here's a project Cafe Racer w/trailer for project seekers.

You have to look at the boat again. I haven't seen the boat for quite some time (2.5-3 years) I would be surprised to see as much damage as is indicated. Cigarette does a good job sealing any holes. It is usually the result of a modification or change. That boat probably came with the old 420 exhaust and was converted to Gil. Resulting in a tail pipe hole modification. You can figure it out with a through inspection. I have a 31 Bullet in the shop getting a complete new transom. Cost to have the glasswork done by a high end shop is $4500. including filling all the holes for a Bravo conversion. This boat ran between a tug boat and barge in south America and caught the drives on the tow cable. The resulting 70 to 0 sudden stop, cracked the transom from side to side. They continued to use the boat for 4 years until the transom finally became soft enough that you can jump on the drives and see them move. The stringers were not harmed. The boat would sell for $55-60,000 in nice shape. You just have to do the math to see what kind of deal it is. I can tell you cost for most of the repairs if you had someone else do the work. Let me know if you need any other info.

Re: Here's a project Cafe Racer w/trailer for project seekers.

If a boat is properly fixed with the whole transom replaced including up the stringers to the point the rot stops the boat is as good as new. I've been in a boat that had a rebuilt transom and pounded the crap out of it w/out a prob.

By the way, if the transom, interior, probably needs a good paint/buff tuch up, you know the motors and drives will have to be replaced/refreshed.

So do the math. Now I'm by no means a pro at this, I'm just estimating from minimal experience. I'm sure some of you can fix these numbers.

Boat 20k
Transom 5k
Drives 3-4k to freshen both
Paint buff what 1k for a good buff
Paint anywhere from 5k to re-do same style to 25k for knew/updated killer paint.
Interior Including update the bolsters and powder coat handles 2-3k
motors...say 10-15k for 496's (which will push that thing in the upper 60's) $ goes up accordingly in motor size.
trailer (that trailer's done!) 5k to rebuild from metal up 8-9k for new.
Gauges, throttles, switches, I couldn't even guess, how about 1500-2k
How's my numbers...I'm guesstimating.

So you get a completely re-riged boat for under 70k? not bad.

What year is this thing anyway? Looks like an 87-90 with the cabin layout.

Great project for the shadetree mechanic...

Someone with time and ingenuity could have a nice boat.

Oh yeah, if someone wants to pay me a grand to color sand/buff their boat I'll be right over. Tell ya what, pay for the plane ticket and give me half that

I e-mailed the guy asking for more pics, but they are not forth coming as he is in another state. Apparently the boat is on the east coast somewhere. Oh well.

The member I sold my last boat to looked into that more than a year ago. Yes N.H. location. Boat was rough. I suggested he avoid it. This was before any mention of rot. Hope he sees this.

Supposing its only the transom , no stringer problems.. Freshwater boat ..Definately needs gimbals too .. Whats it worth ??
Any other project cigs out there ? :drink:

Re: Here's a project Cafe Racer w/trailer for project seekers.

Any word on this boat? Has anyone recently taken a peek at it? If someone was serious about it, I'd help them sort the rot out, gratous of course.
I love these projects that much...

Pantera1 09-13-2004 07:24 PM

Re: Here's a project Cafe Racer w/trailer for project seekers.

I checked it out ..stringers dont sound wet ..Transom is like a sponge
Gimbals are real loose.. Supposedly the motors are strong ..420's , good engines to build on ..
Interior isnt that bad but im sure it will start to come apart with use as its been sitting long enough to have weeds growing out of the shmegg caught in the rubrail .. All the gauge faces are UV'd ..junk
Fiberglass work needed all over then probably a paint job.
I realy want to give this thing a good home but I just cant see 25K it needs too much

Re: Here's a project Cafe Racer w/trailer for project seekers.

Ahhh, a REAL project.

I will never understand why people hang on to these things like grim death is hunting them down. Who tells these people, "Yeah it will sell NEXT year". Like it's gonna be worth more or somethin.
Please, someone offer this dude 10k and go from there.

Hell Ill go over and wash the thing for free .. Its making me ill to see it so neglected..
He wont budge on 25K
Good luck too him !

Re: Here's a project Cafe Racer w/trailer for project seekers.

Too bad. The thing will just rot away until the remaining "good" stuff is no longer good.
Get to be friends with him, then get him drunk or a hooker (or both...).
