32 Skater?
Outboards or Sterndrives?
what would you choose and why? |
Re: 32 Skater?
Whats the diff ?
|
Re: 32 Skater?
oops.
Outboards not Inboards :stupid: |
Re: 32 Skater?
Inboards or Sterndrives? Is that a trick question.
Did you mean Outboards or Stearndrives? I would go Sterndrive SSM 6's, and medium HP nothing less then 800 a side. Outboards are a lot cheaper but your going to need three of them on the 32 |
Re: 32 Skater?
TDO , 6's and 800hp would be killer but wayyyyyy out of my league.
im wondering if a guy on a limited budget can own a mild powered 32 Skater (~85MPH) and not get hammered on insurance and the price of a used one. something reliable too. |
Re: 32 Skater?
32 Skater with Inboards and 6's, have seen the setup near the 170mph mark.
|
Re: 32 Skater?
First, you need to state the year of the boat as the older generation or "Classic 32'" works better with outboards than the newer 32'.
That eliminates one question, next is what speeds do you hope to achieve and what type of boating. Rough water lends itself to the inboards. Nothing lends itself to Bravos so choose your budget, then speed and power. |
Re: 32 Skater?
Rik-which hull are you considering faster, the older, smaller 32?
|
Re: 32 Skater?
Loto Party, A early model 32 with triple 2.5s are nice. They fly nice and level and the handle the rough nice. There was on for sale for 65k and it was clean.

Re: 32 Skater?
apache21 , thats what im interested in.
last summer i found myself in a pack of (4) 28 skaters w/outboards running up to big dicks. they were toying with each other , running hard then backing off. basically having a blast!!! i thought to myself , man those guys are having way more fun then me but we were in fairly clean water so they could air them out. water is terrible where im at (10 mm) so maybe an older 32 could handle it? im not looking for something that will do 100 mph either so maybe insurance wont be outrageous  |
Re: 32 Skater?
I looked into this exact set up. The skater website says a 32 with twin 300 OB's will be 100+ mph. thats fast enough for me now and alot cheaper then 6's and 800 hp per side. plus twins are cheaper and easier then trips. wouldnt the center OB take a lot of abuse on a trip setup?
If i dont get the cig im bidding on, i may fall back to the 32 with OB's. I like the new style with canopies. Anyone know how much this wold cost? -Rick |
Re: 32 Skater?
try to find an older 32a should be able to find. I dont believe that there is such a beast. A skater that doesnt run 100 or more. try a 24 or 28 they run just as well
|
Re: 32 Skater?
A Skater that runs 85...kinda like a bean bag shot gun or a rubber knife :D :D :D
|
Re: 32 Skater?
The older 32 A is slower with inboard power over the 32 B and for some reason the older 32 A runs better with outboards.
Now if you were to run inboards, the application if far easier with the new 32 B over the older 32 A as there vastly more engine room in the newer 32 B. |
Re: 32 Skater?
Im thinking of doing the same thing. Where I have my beach house "Galveston" the water is shallow and I need the drives
to come out of the water completely. Ive been informed the middle outboard adds very little top end speed, and it takes a huge beating. 300+ Verado's would make a really nice package, I think its coming we just have to wait a little while. Curtis |
Re: 32 Skater?
a 32 skater with twin 500 HP motors will run a 100, no need for big HP for the speed you want. Keep in mind outboards like fuel.
I have a friend with a 29 DCB with tripple OB 300's (brand new), another friend with a 32 Skater with 1000 HP each twins. The DCB uses almost double the fuel and runs 40 mph slower. |
Re: 32 Skater?
Double the fuel sounds a little high. Take the 3rd 300x off the back he may lose 2 or 3 mph tops, and drop the fuel by 1/3.
You also have to look at the cost of ownership, 300x 5ry warranty available priceless. 1000 HP, rebuild every year about 7k per motor. Propellers, 5k each vs 500 each, for those of us who are not perfect. Just comments, I like the sound of the big blocks, but love the no hassle of the bolt ons, if it starts and waters spitting out the back Im good to gooooo. Curtis |
Re: 32 Skater?
Can you get a 5 year Mercury warranty on a 300x. I thought it was just one year. Please confirm.

I have been going down for over 25 years I am very familar with conditions I also have a home @ the 13.5 mm. I personally would not buy a 32 classic over a 28. I kept my 28 at Big thunder and could run all weekend on 70 gallons.....keep in mind that the lake gets pretty small when you start covering it at 85mph with an ocassional 95 romp. If I could buy right now I would go with the 30 AMT in the classifieds and try to make a good deal....the bang for the buck on either the 28 skater or the 30 amt is unbeatable........I have wasted over 200k just to say I wish I would have just re-powered my 28  as far as arranging a ride. im not ready to make a move yet so i dont want to waste anyones time but THANKYOU! im still enjoying the Apache tremendously , however the natural progression to my addiction called boating will eventually lead me to a cat and more expense  uggggg |
Re: 32 Skater?
I currently have a 1998 32' Classic with (2) 2001, 300x's. Runs between 95 and 100+ depending on how much fuel and people are on board. The fuel use is pretty good, at cruise about 40 gallons per hour, but you will go 75 miles on 40 or so Gallons. This boat eats up rough water. Peter designed these boats to win when "Pro-stock" was a very competitive class. I had a 28' Skater before this 32', the 28 is quite a bit faster with the same power, I miss the 15 or so MPH, but when the water gets big the higher tunnel and freeboard makes this boat a blast. Insurance is around $4000. per year.

Re: 32 Skater?
What is the differance between the 32 and the 32B?
|
Re: 32 Skater?
How much "less expensive" (I did not say cheaper)are #5's than 6's and what is the disadvantage if any??
|
Re: 32 Skater?
I think after you buy the external steering they are about the same.

Re: 32 Skater?
lotoparty, The 28 skater is a great setup and it is fast. Don't let anyone talk you out of a 32 with a triple setup with 280s. Twin 300PM are nice but pricey and hard to come by finding used parts. I have a connection in New York that can get Me 245 BP Merc Long Block for $1200 each if I blow a engine and 280s for $3500. I think you would like a older 32. You won't lose money on the setup. Also price rebuilt long blocks for a 300 Pro and a 280 and you will make your mind up real quick. Speed with a 32 with tripple 280s will be about 102 MPH. A 28 will be a little faster with twin 280's.
|
Re: 32 Skater?
Loto Party there is a 32 Skater on the Skater Website. It looks clean. Try to buy a outboard Skater Minus Powerheads. Then have some built for yourself. Many people get screwed buying engines on boats for sale. This boat could probably be bought fo the same price you bought your Brave.

how much yaa wanna bet , if i had a skater that topped out at 50 mph ide still get quotes for at least 3k/yr to insure it. |
Re: 32 Skater?
With twin 280s you might run 80's. Not for sure though. You can do some port work and other mods to get those 280's to push over 300 on the Dyno. Then you might run faster. Twin 300 Pro maxs have the Torque.

Re: 32 Skater?
Gee, I run over a hundred and pay less than a thousand for insurance in the 31 Warlock ...and have a cabin and a porta potty :D

Re: 32 Skater?
Does anybody know the freeboard in the 32. In front of back seats.
Curtis |
Re: 32 Skater?
a new style or old style???
|
Re: 32 Skater?
I would like both please.
Im looking for a boat with more freeboard than mine. You bought the old agitator right ? Curtis |
Re: 32 Skater?
Have 32B with triple pro max's that runs over a lot of ugly water at 70/80 mph that a 28 really struggles with. Runs 110 /112, gps, with 1/2 fuel load and two people. Can get faster with light load and right conditions. Have to keep an eye on water pressure on center motor, top end but no problems otherwise. I think the center motor gives you a lot more than a few mph on the big hull and definitly gets you over a 100 in a hurry. Insurance in high 3's.
|
Re: 32 Skater?
yes i have the old/new agitator and its a old style and i am very happy with it. we have changed the setup and so far so good. look on our websight for pictures and info seeya charlie

Re: 32 Skater?
If you go 32 Skater, inboards all the way!!!
Buying a Skater and looking to cruise at 85 MPH is not very practical, your going to be in the porpoise most of the time around that speed. Your going to find that you will be traveling at speeds of under 60 or over 90. Theres no way around the porpoise, it is the nature of the beast at least with inboards, I have never been in a 32 with outboards. Tabs help alittle but not as much as one would hope. Porpoising down your local water way sucks. The 32 with twin 525's should run around 110+, that works great if you ask me!!! Find one with #6's and a power upgrade down the line will be much easier on the pocket book considering all the drives you could go through if the boat was rigged with bravo style drives. Jeff |
Re: 32 Skater?
there is a nice 32' on e-bay for 40k. Outboards.
